Hi All!

Here’s an update of the stable Opera version. We applied a few stability and UX fixes in this build, and the highlights for the release include:

  • DNA-45200 [Extensions] No permissions messages.
  • This is a fix for extensions installing – now after you’ll install one, the list of permissions should be complete.

  • DNA-45037 [Engine] Never save password does not work
  • This one fixes the “never save password for this site” sliding toolbar selection.

  • DNA-45669 Unable to install extension from file
  • Extensions can now be installed manually.

Chromium is updated to version 46.0.2490.86.

Thanks, Kornelia, for another Opera stable version 33.0.1990.115 update for some stability improvements and bugs-fixing !

  • AlaaGh

Thank you for this update 🙂 !

  • Piotrek

When will sync extensions in Opera?

    • Aneta Reluga

We are not working on it at the moment.

      • muratservan

        Sad news.

  • Dark Magician

You should really release 64-bit Windows build now.

  • nutcracker

The issue with the Speed Dial tiles arrangement, is ridiculous. Every time I open my computer or relaunch Opera (hint: after setup or Experiment changes?) the tiles (including the tiles inside the folders) are messed up and I have to put them back in place!

  • LoverOfLife

Two things that are bothering me right now:
    1. Internal updating isn’t working as it should be (I have to update manually)
    2. Updating manually only works with the offline installer

    • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

It’s because we’ve got gradual autoupdate – some of the users will get autoupdate tomorrow, all of them the day after tomorrow.

      • LoverOfLife

I’ve read that before. I’m trying to understand, but why is gradualy autoupdate and why isn’t updating for everyone and everywhere in the same time ?

        • Leonardo Gomes

To not overload the servers and their network.

          • LoverOfLife

            Thank you for the explanation!

        • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

Although we work hard to catch all bugs and issues in the beta version, sometimes there’s still a chance an issue can get through. We use gradual update so we can more carefully track these and catch them quickly before they affect more people.”

          • LoverOfLife

            Got it, thank you! 🙂

Before I could update to this stable build the previous build lost my entire session (5th time it has done this), and I lost 10 windows, since about Opera 32 or so there has been a nasty corrupted session bug where all tabs and windows are lost, and I have to try via History to find them 🙁

    • Aneta Reluga

Hi there – what is the operating system you’re using? Thanks.

      • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

OS X 10.11.1 (had it happen in OS X 10.10.5 also), it is a bug w/ Opera Chromium gotten it 40 times more often then w/ Opera based on Presto (only lost it 2 times in 7 years)

It seems Opera recent versions has a moderately high rate of corrupting the session

        • Aneta Reluga

Ok, thanks. I logged crash issues for Mac specifically.

        • http://eliotime.com/ eliotime3000

In case of Windows Vista and Debian GNU/Linux “Jessie” (version 8.2), everything is fine.

Hi, sorry for the late reply, I read here, that you have Windows Vista, and if so, then in case, that this is edition N, you can try to install the Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP (more details here), and check if this helps in your case.

how the hell is that possible? are you sure you got your original version from opera.com and not from some other site? Or is it maybe a bug of Windows 10. You can go here http://get.geo.opera.com/ftp/pub/opera/desktop/33.0.1990.115/ and try installing the correct one again:

      • http://felipe.lopes.nom.br/ Felipe

Yes, i will try uninstall e install from this link.

        • http://felipe.lopes.nom.br/ Felipe

I think that is a bug on installer. I tried install from installation link of the post one more time, but installed the version 33.0.1990.98. The link that you posted works with me, very thanks!

      • GF-REX

Thanks! I was stuck on that version too, which had an annoying bug that kept crashing me. (Paste URL in address bar, hit Enter.)

I was using Vivaldi instead, but its still got some more work until its stable enough for me. Now I’m back with Opera!

    • Leonardo Gomes

      You’ve got a testing build.

      • http://felipe.lopes.nom.br/ Felipe

But i downloaded from the link above and from opera.com. News appears on spedd Dial as “Discover”. I installed about 3 times and shows this version.

        • Leonardo Gomes

Yep, those stable testing builds comes from the installer you get on opera.com.

    • Rafael Luik

It’s a gradual update, even for new users.

      • http://eliotime.com/ eliotime3000

In GNU/Linux, it will arrives one day later in the Opera Repo.

  • gld59

Updates to Opera are not very compatible with sandboxes. I started Opera sandboxed (Opera 33.0.1990.58, running in Sandboxie 5.06, on Windows 10 Home 64-bit, version 1511.10586.3), and opened the About Opera tab. Opera said it had started downloading an update. I don’t want to *update* Opera in the sandbox, just *run* it there once it has been updated normally, so I closed Opera. However, when I start Opera outside the sandbox, it claims it is up to date. I can always download 33.7MiB of full installer, but then what’s the point of having an incremental update? BTW, this is *not* the first time Opera has done this.

  • Shion

You guys really want me to switch to FireFox, do you?
How the hell do I remove that stupid news-block that screws up my speed dial?
I already have a proper RSS reader installed as extension, I don’t need this ****.

    • Vux777

      opera://flags/#news-on-startpage

      it’s disabled by default

      • Shion

Right after I manually upgraded Opera to 33.0.1990.113 via online installer I got that stupid block… And that (version) should be the reason the flag isnt there. Monkeys at Opera made online installer (the one at the f***ing main page of opera.com) to download a bit older version, thus the bug.

        Trying offline installer now…

Edit: About shows version 33.0.1990.115 now. News changed back to Discovery. News block disapeared. And the flag never appeared. Problem kinda solved.

I suppose I should stop trying to manually upgrade Opera as soon as news come out, or Opera should stop bringing up updates that aren’t ready yet.

        • Vux777

          I’m sorry
I missed article from mail updates (this one is about stable)
news on speed dial is first shown in latest developer O34, and now on O35 (the flag was from)
If you see that in 33, you probably get testing build
some users get that randomly, but better to devs answer is that really the case

edit: ok, they probably pushed test build

The heart button is removed when you have your speed dial open since this version (33.0.1990.115). Is this normal?

  • Shion

Another bug I mentioned at previous update news-post came back: strange backgrounds of SELECT and div/iframe scroll elements in Windows 8.1. Totally related to opera://flags#submodule-native-theme-alt (everything is normal if it’s disabled).

If I’m reading that correctly, WhatsApp Web crashes after 5 minutes, making it difficult to use.

  • pidgin

Looks like freezing issue is resolved. At least haven’t experienced one today

  • Izer0

Problem with blank pages is back (page failed, content disappeared) 🙁 Seems like still no fixed GPU issues started from version 32. Latest stable version is 31. Revert back 🙁

    • http://eliotime.com/ eliotime3000

Did you disabled the hardware acceleration?

      • Falconet

I still have this issue and I had disabled hardware acceleration a long time ago because of another bug in speed dial.

        • Aneta Reluga

And please, the same question to you as the one I posted above, what graphic card do you have? That would take us closer to reproduce the issue.

          • Falconet

AMD HD8570D, the integrated GPU in the the A8-6500 APU.
Using open-source drivers. Firefox, Vivaldi, Chromium don’t have any issues.

Using Ubuntu MATE 14.04.3 LTS 64-bit.

          • Aneta Reluga

Thanks. Adding the info to the bug report logged for this issue.

      • Izer0

No, why? I want HW acceleration, it’s working on O31, it’s worked on O 33.0.1990.58, and problem back on O 33.0.1990.115.

        • Aneta Reluga

Ehh. The real issue is that we have investigated this and are unable to reproduce this, either at work or at home (where many of us have win7 64-bit too). Can you please post a screenshot when it happens (is it a renderer crash, or the page becomes blank?) Also, what graphic card do you have?

          • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

Might also want to know the driver version for the graphics card

          • Izer0

I think it is renderer crash, grey page with Page failed message. It’s happen on fully loaded pages after same time without any activity (non active tab), sometimes crashes opera and affect Skype (smiles is not animated until Skype restart), so seems like renderer crash. Intel HD graphics 4000, driver ver. 10.18.10.3621.

          • Izer0

Link to screenshot: http://www.softpae.com/opera_error.jpg It is in Slovak lang.

Just this week my bookmarks are accessible, from the toolbar to the bookmarks folders and speed dial, then yesterday all of a sudden I noticed that my speed dials were missing. I didn’t mind it, but today when I need to access a bookmark on the toolbar, there’s no bookmarks. All my bookmarks are gone. I can’t find it, I checked the profile folder can’t find the bookmarks file. I have a ton bookmarks, now I can’t see any of them. How do I restore it back.

    Opera 33, Windows 7.

    Thanks!

  • vivian

how can I update Opera? I’ve got version 32 and it says it’s latest one

also today I lost whole last session (all the tabs) which isn’t nice
and some time ago shortcut reappeared on my Speed Dial (from the deleted default ones)

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Download and run the installer.

      • vivian

so I have to update it manually? it sucks
        why opera doesn’t support autoupdate?
why isn’t there any button to check for updates?

        • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

opera://about/ is where the update check is (the recent updates have been a gradual roll out)

        • Leonardo Gomes

Opera supports autoupdate – here it is updated automatically 99% of the time – but it seems to be not working for you, so it’s better to run the installer.

As said, you check for updates when you go to “About Opera” page. Opera also checks for updates in timed intervals.

          • vivian

It tells me I’ve got latest version 32.0.1948.44. Which clearly isn’t the latest one.
Why there is no settings for update?
Why isn’t there any check for update button in Opera?

          • Leonardo Gomes

As said, autoupdate seems to not be working in your installation, that’s why you should run the installer to try to fix it.

          • vivian

            Why it’s not working?

          • Leonardo Gomes

Sorry, don’t know. There can be many possibilities.

          • vivian

I’ve decided to give Opera a try on the new computer. But since it’s not working properly I will say it bye bye.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Why there is no settings for update?

Probably because they don’t think it’s necessary. Also they seem to don’t want autoupdate to be easily disabled.

          • vivian

I want to enable it – but can’t.
As you can see it’s necessary.

Why plugin Widevine Content Decryption Module does not work in Opera on Linux (Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit)?

    I copied files:

    libwidevinecdmadapter.so

    libwidevinecdm.so

    (/opt/google/chrome/)

    to

    /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/Opera

How to add the plug Widevine Content Decryption Module to Opera?

I found the “opera://flags” include: Encrypted Media Extensions ( EME ) is inactive for platoform Linux. Why and when it will be available?

  • http://djdb.me/ DJDB

This is one of the buggiest Opera stable releases for me. Several web pages stop responding and Youtube (and other) videos turn black or green when full screen.

    • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

      What OS are your on?

      • http://djdb.me/ DJDB

        Windows 10 Pro 64bit.

        • Vux777

when those things start to happening, it’s wise to check basic stuff:
-on opera://flags/ check for flags change (there is a Changed menu item for quick access to those). If something is changed, try reset to default
          – try running Opera in private window to see if some of the plugins/extensions are not the cause

          – check for hardware acceleration (some videos and pages won’t work properly if HWA is disabled, and then again if it’s ON, maybe codecs are missing)

          • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

Could be graphics card drivers need updating, or a update for Windows 10

It’s a known issue (DNA-43687) and we’re working on it. Thanks for reporting!

  • Goran

This and previous stable versions are buggiest ones. I have never experienced crash before, but now from time to time Opera does not respond.

I am on Win10 64, up to date, and all drivers up to date.

Is there any way that I can help by providing crash report, some logs? I am willing to help, just tell me how.

    Sincerely,
    Goran

    • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

Hi Goran, thanks that you’re willing to help us. You need to set the crash login email address. Ones you do this, I’ll search our crash reports database to find your crashes:
      1. Right click “My Computer > Properties”
      2. Click “Advanced system settings”
      3. Under the Advanced Tab click “Environment Variables”
      4. Create a new system variable with the name: OPERA_CRASH_EMAIL and value: my_email@opera.com
      5. Click OK
      6. Reboot might be required

When you set this, send me an email you put there. It can be a dummy email address – I just need it to track your logs.

      • Goran

        Hi Kornelia,

I put “stupar@opera.com”. I do not have that mail address but it would be nice to have it 🙂

When opera crashes I will report it here so you can find it.

      • Goran

Did you find any crash reports? Opera still crashes for me.

    • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

Have you enabled any experiments in opera://flags/ ?

Also check to make sure plug ins are updated, and (even tho Windows 10 is set to auto update, might want to double check for updates)

Ctrl+Tabbing is terrible in new versions of Opera. Can you at least put a switch into options? I need to switch tabs quickly not choose them from some small menu.

Got a crash some minutes ago that took the browser down. Posting here some data:

Faulting application name: opera.exe, version: 33.0.1990.115, time stamp: 0x5649994e
Faulting module name: opera.dll, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x564998eb

I wonder, if a tab has caused the crash, what’s the point of the browser being multi-processed when it doesn’t actually do what it’s supposed to?

    • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

Did you click on a link on page or do something else with the browser when the crash happened?

the version number for opera.dll is a bit strange to me (tho not related to the crash)

      • xirit64

Oh at this point I don’t even remember, I was just browsing as usual, having some tabs open probably reading some news site with their embedded images videos and such, trivial stuff. If I knew exactly what info is sent to Opera I would allow the browser to send the crash automatically but as long as I don’t, I have everything telemetry-related unticked. :/

  • Chetan Parmar

Intermittently, I find that Opera 33.0.1990.115 will take a long time to open pages that were previously opened without any issues. I’m using the 64-Bit version on a fairly fast laptop. I love Opera but have always found that inconsistent performance has hindered it’s adoption. Is there anything I can check to see why this happens?

  • Michał Ulman

Hello. I’ve been using for this version of Opera for a while and that’s what I noticed. Every time I enter any site Opera creates a few new instances of opera.exe. Look at the screen:

    http://i.imgur.com/V8fCA6e.gif

After a while there’s hundreds of them. Is it a bug? Also happens in Incognito mode.
    Windows 8.1 x86

    • Leonardo Gomes

I can’t see any opera.exe on your picture but yes, multiple processes are normal in Chromium based browsers.

Which plugin is that on the picture? Having lots of plugin processes like that doesn’t seem to be ok.

      • Michał Ulman

I’m sorry I wasn’t precise. Opera’s task manager shows “Narzędzie” (=”Tool”), but Windows’ task manager shows it as “opera.exe”.

        http://i.imgur.com/T8Z0X1v.jpg

Funny is that “Narzędzie” is constantly multiplying as I’m browsing. Even when I close all browser’s tabs it’s not being destroyed (I’m assuming it should).

        My extensions:
        turned on:
        1. Bookmarks manager 1.0
        2. Download chrome extension 2.2.4
        3. GetThemAll Video Downloader 7.4.1
        4. uBlock 1.3.2
        turned off:
        1. CHNPrice Search 3.2014
        2. Cookie manager 1.1
        3. FBDown video downloader 1.0.0
        4. SaveFrom.net helper 5.66
        5. Violent Monkey 2.1.10.4

        • Leonardo Gomes

Does it happens with extensions turned off?

          And what about flags?

          • Michał Ulman

Got it! It’s not the extensions. In about flags I had “Enable experimental Web Platform features” enabled. When I disabled it the “Narzędzie” is no longer multiplying. Now it isn’t showing at all.
Thank you Leonardo Gomes for your help.

    • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

      Does “narzędzie” translate to tool?

      • Michał Ulman

        yes “narzędzie” = tool.

I have noticed PPAPI Flash Player has stability & performance issues, can you reenable NPAPI Flash player in Opera as a work around for the buggy PPAPI Flash Player?

    • xirit64

      +1
I use livestream twitch GUI because of that for twitch streams, (https://github.com/bastimeyer/livestreamer-twitch-gui or through command line https://github.com/chrippa/livestreamer ), not only is it very CPU friendly and can play 60 fps streams constantly with 60 fps and not with variable 30-50 as Pepper does, but there is also a huge difference in video and image quality (crisp vs. blurry and soft blacks vs. hard blacks) when compared to browser’s PPAPI. If anything, it shows what a regression PPAPI was.

Two issues with facebook chat window:

    – when I start a message with a number (0-9), Opera either zooms the page or switches tabs.
    – when I start a message with an emoji from Chromoji addon, Opera displays it twice but posts it once anyway (same issue within facebook comment fields below shared contents etc.)

Can anyone explain why this image crashes Opera even with all extensions disabled, while FireFox opens it just fine?

    !!!NSFW!!! https://im1.ibsearch.xxx/4/73/6624266914bd7839837f66aeb9406.jpg

Opera lags horribly with images bigger than 2000×2000, pretty much dies with 5000×5000, and literally dies at 20000×20000. WTF is wrong with Opera and big images? Why do they hate each other so much?

    • Leonardo Gomes

Can anyone explain why this image crashes Opera even with all extensions disabled, while FireFox opens it just fine?

Because Opera is not Firefox and vice-versa, so they don’t have the same issues?

Here only the page crashes, not Opera. Opera developer 35 on Windows 10.

      • Shion

Should have rephrased my question. FireFox is old. Opera is new (1,5 years or so). Every new browser should be able to do one of the most basic and important thing a web browser should do – showing an image without any problems. Yet Opera does not. While the oldie still does and don’t even lag about it. The funny thing is that I’ve been commenting and reporting this issue for… 3 months maybe. Yet have Opera done anything about it?

And the one who crashes is, well, opera.exe, which is… Opera. One of 19(!) instances of it on my system now, but is still Opera. Were the core process to crash, I would’ve been typing this comment from FireFox.

It’s kinda funny to realise, that I myself getting tired of pointing out how lazy and low-quality Opera guys are. Especially while they already proved that, by creating stable, beta and dev streams, so OTHERS would test the browser for them for free. Yet here I am on stable stream having crashes by webm’s and big images.

        • Leonardo Gomes

And the one who crashes is, well, opera.exe, which is… Opera. One of 19(!) instances of it on my system now, but is still Opera

Renderer crash and browser crash are different issues, probably treated in different ways.

          • Shion

            >Do you have the bug number?
No, reported them without my email, did not remember the number. But if Opera staff is good, it won’t be hard to find in the “Crashes Opera” section.

            >So just because you can see your ukltra high resolution porn pictures…
            I can’t – that’s the point. Typo?

            >You think that there aren’t any builds other than the public ones? You think that they don’t do lots of internal tests? However, even with lots of tests they can predict all issues. because they can’t know what every single user will do. That’s why software houses allow users to report issues.
Yes, they maybe do the testing themselves, they offer 2 additonal streams specially so people would test their stuff for them, and still, with all that stages, they release STABLE builds that CRASH.

            >Renderer crash and browser crash are different issues, probably treated in different ways.
Thanks to Chromium it is. But that’s Chromium archievement, not Opera.

This guys might have papers that qualifies them to their jobs, but I suppose we all can agree on one thing – Opera is lazy. It took damn 1,5 years for them to bring back bookmarks and sync. Not a new features but something that they already had a working model of. And when they fix something, they are halfassed about it. How long do WEBM’s keep crashing tabs? How long that Antialiasing of images lags the crap out of renderer processes? I still remember the download-popup-focus-steal bug, while they “oficially” fixed it, they completly missed the point and ignored any further reports about it. And to top it all, they don’t work on chromium-core much (as said above, bug-fixing isn’t Opera’s strong point). UI and internal extensions – that’s their main work, and they are this lazy doing it.

I just wish they were true and wrote somewhere, that they don’t really care for PC browser version and have other priorities. Something like “THIS BROWSER IS FREE AND DOESN’T BRING US ANY MONEY, SO WE DON’T GIVA A ####!! DEAL WITH IT!”, because the results pretty much say exactly that.

          • Leonardo Gomes

            Yep, that was a typo.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Yes, they maybe do the testing themselves, they offer 2 additonal streams specially so people would test their stuff for them, and still, with all that stages, they release STABLE builds that CRASH.

First of all, welcome to reallity. If you think that stable softwares don’t crash, don’t freeze, don’t have a single bug, you are living in Wonderland. They may have less issues than a alpha or a beta version but they still have issues.

And as i said, there is no way Opera or any other software house can guess that a new build of their product will cause (serious) issues for some users. They can’t delay a release just because 1 out of 100 is having issues.

This guys might have papers that qualifies them to their jobs, but I suppose we all can agree on one thing – Opera is lazy. It took damn 1,5 years for them to bring back bookmarks and sync.

Nope, i don’t agree and i’m pretty sure many also don’t agree.

For me bookmarks could have been vanished a long time ago and replaced by full text search, the best feature in Opera Presto imho.

Better than you need to categorize a page just because you think it can be helpful in the future.

Not a new features but something that they already had a working model of.

They had a model for a dfifferent product with a different engine, with a different code.

Everything needed to be builded from zero.

How long do WEBM’s keep crashing tabs?

They did/do it? Don’t remember have had problems with it.

Some issues may depend on OS or PC configuration, so they are not easy to reproduce and fix.

Also, there are issues that may be related to Chromium and a fix may depend on Chromium’s developers.

And to top it all, they don’t work on chromium-core much

            Yes, they do: https://operasoftware.github.io/upstreamtools/

I just wish they were true and wrote somewhere, that they don’t really care for PC browser version and have other priorities.

            They would be lying.

          • Shion

Just for the sake of statistics:
            – There were 659 working days from first commit to the last.
            – Total number of commits – 8048.
            – That leads to stable 12 commits per a workday by a group of 12+ people, so at least 1 daily commit per person it is (statisticaly). 1 commit per day. I’m kinda jealous of that job, and I don’t even know how high/low the salary is.
            – Every commit has a description, and that stuff takes the most time.
            – Not all of them are related to PC browser version.
            – There are days with very low commit count, from like just 3 people out of 12+ group. Yeah, priorities.
            – There are descriptions with “Fingers crossed” like phrases. Isn’t it only “yes or no” in programming? Didn’t knew the “hoping” is now a part of it.

I still think PC version development is lazy. And don’t forget to add the actually visible results: lack of customisation, year of bookmarks development, some useless features like video background, many ignored pleads for options and tiny features, and the fact that some originally-Opera-features (ex. SmartRSS) are realized by extensions – by people unrelated to Opera.

            L-A-Z-Y.

P.S. WEBM crashing is at least a year old problem now. Some BBS even have special videos for the sole purpose of an argument in browser wars threads.

        • Leonardo Gomes

So just because you can see your ukltra high resolution porn pictures in one website you say that Opera doesn’t work at all and, even worse, you say that Opera’s employees are not qualified to to their jobs because they release public test builds of their products, like many other software houses?

You think that there aren’t any builds other than the public ones? You think that they don’t do lots of internal tests?

However, even with lots of tests they can predict all issues. because they can’t know what every single user will do. That’s why software houses allow users to report issues.

          • Shion

Windows 8.1 x64. The problem most likely has something to do with antialiasing at zoom < 100% (and maybe APU/GPU? AMD A10-5705M APU here). With smaller images it just lags, this one crashes the tab.
FireFox doesn't bother with antialiasing and has no problems showing the downsized image.

After the newest release (33.0.1990.115) Opera is unresponsive in about 20-30 sec before it will load any webpages. It started when I ran Win 8.1 and still continues after I upgraded to Win 10. I have tried to rename the opera folder in my profile, but with the same result.I’ve also tried to switch of hardware aceleration etc in the settings menu but with no luck. Not sure what to do.
