Hi All,

During the last week, our developers, interaction designers and QA engineers spent a couple of days in France. We’ve attended the Engineering Seminar which focused on sharing knowledge and exchanging ideas. Now we are back and present you with the Opera developer update, in which we have a number of improvements, changes and bugfixes:

Linux proprietary codecs support

The Linux version of Opera developer is now able to detect whether the chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra package is installed. As long as this package is up-to-date (45.0.2454.x and newer), Opera can make use of the libraries in this package to provide support for some proprietary codecs for media elements, including H264 and MP3.

Download in progress warning dialog

As promised, we are currently testing the feature where Opera warns on exit when there are downloads in progress:

Download in progress

This feature is hidden behind the flag: #show-downloads-in-progress-warning (disabled by default). Please enable it via opera:flags if you want to see how it works.

NPAPI is back

The flag #disable-npapi is now disabled by default, which means that the access to NPAPI plugins has been restored. For now. However, bear in mind that PPAPI plugins are prioritized if present, so some amount of digging in the flags might be needed anyway.

MSE+MP3 on developer stream

MSE+MP3 on the developer stream is now available, which is controlled by the flag #mse-audio-mpeg-aac turned on by default.

New Opera branding

In this release, we present you also with the visual Opera developer rebranding:

eveloper Installer - Mac

developer Installer - Win

developer - branding

As easily noticed, the new Opera developer logo slightly reminds of the old Opera beta logo; as the rebranding gradually rolls out to the other streams, you will see the integrity of the whole change. Stay tuned.

  • Ralf Brinkmann

First one today! Thank you. 🙂

  • nanana1

    Thanks !

    • Ralf Brinkmann

I thought, the trick to run Java in Opera is to switch “Disable NPAPI plug-ins” opera://flags/#disable-npapi to disabled and I’m sure it worked all the time. But it doesn’t do that anymore.

      • Aneta Reluga

Yes, some more tweaking is needed because PPAPI plugins are prioritized. Unless, something else weird happens – in that case, could you please share more info which NPAPI used to work and does not now? Thanks.

        • Vux777

search on speed dial expands sometime without reason (usually if I click on bookmarks bar icon)

and I hope when re-branding Opera Beta logo you will introduce some different color
          this looks too similar
          http://prntscr.com/8taapg

          • Aneta Reluga

Yes. If you look closely at the changelog, you’ll notice that SD mechanics has been changed and already a number of SD-related issues is fixed, but it’s work in progress (including the search field spontaneous expansion).
And, as for the logo… please wait for the gradual branding update of all streams, when everything will become clear, I hope.

          • Marcin Mitek

Beta icon will be slightly different this time. Stay tuned 🙂

        • Ralf Brinkmann

I’m using the actual version 8 update 60 build 1.8.0_60-b27. The SWR3 livecam (http://www.swr3.de/studiocam-beta/) does not work and gives me a warning, that no Java is installed and teh Java testpage https://www.java.com/de/download/installed.jsp shows me an information, that Chrome does not support NPAPI plug-ins. That’s all I found out now. So can I do more “tweaking”?

          • Aneta Reluga

Ok, I can confirm that now, this is investigated. Thanks.

          • Dave-H

I’m seeing the same behaviour with the Java plugin on the test page, but the NPAPI QuickTime plugin is working fine so NPAPI plugins are enabled OK.
I wonder if Oracle’s site is just detecting a Chromium-based browser and putting up the error message regardless.

          • SQL

I believe chromium removed support for java applets as they deprecated npapi. (that patch landed some time ago, within a few months? it was dcheng@chromium.org who created the patch if you wanna go digging)

    • Aneta Reluga

🙂 Yes, the logo change is imminent. But I can assure you that the logo change integrity is retained. Please just have some patience. 🙂

      • nanana1

Can’t wait to see the new Opera Beta logo 🙂

      • Gustav Ekner

Perhaps the beta icon will be blue now instead 🙂

    • Lacedaemon

  • Mike

Ctrl-enter in address bar still broken, or is that related to DNA-44543?

    • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

Yep, it’s not fixed yet. Sorry for that.

    • Aneta Reluga

Indeed, it is not fixed – internally logged as DNA-44546 and still in progress.

  • Lacedaemon

That ring… I will never get used to it, it’s awful.

    • Olli

Well at least it looks better than the old Opera Developer icon which I disliked from the beginning. I even like this icon more than the red version. But it resembles the old Opera Beta icon rather than Developer, so I wonder what icon they’ll gonna come up with for Beta.

      • NoName

I also think the developer icon has improved.
But it does not look that well in 16px size, which means favicons and taskmanager in my case.

        • Vux777

          16px looks sharp and clean
especially compared to new google favicon
          (which is disaster)
          http://i.imgur.com/GTNbJG2.png

          • NoName

That icon is only used for internal sites. I like that one as well.
Try use small icons in your Windows taskbar. It looks like a weirdly faded flat O.

        • Olli

Yeah, it looks really awful as a favicon.

    • Ralf Brinkmann

      What do you mean?

      • Lacedaemon

The ring man, in the above screenshots and probably in the taskbar (haven’t updated it yet). That’s no Opera, that’s a ring.

        • Ralf Brinkmann

Ah, you mean THIS ring! I was always listening for a “ring”. 🙂

          • Lacedaemon

There’s only one “true” ring, that of Nibelungen! 🙂 Then there are others, like the above…

    • Gustav Ekner

I liked the previous one more too. The new one is not flat enough… 🙂

  • http://pavelkouril.cz/ Pavel Kouřil

    Hello,

are you able to explain the “DNA-44543 Impossible to enter special characters in the address bar”?

Like, it’s not “special characters” because I can write ěščřž in the address bar without any issues, also ďťň which are done via a dead key. Also, I can write / via numpad without any issues, but writing / via right alt + key next to shift (US key for /) is impossible.

So, what exactly is broken and what isn’t, apart from Right Alt modificator?

    • Marcin Mitek

      We are aware of it.

      • http://pavelkouril.cz/ Pavel Kouřil

I know you are aware of it, since I copied it directly from Known issues.” 🙁

But you didn’t answer my question, which was “So, what exactly is roken and what isn’t, apart from Right Alt modificator?” Because the description “impossible to enter special characters” is not really accurate, I’m asking for a better description of the issue, if you can give one.

        • Aneta Reluga

One good example would be Hungarian and Polish diacritic characters entered with the right Alt modifier. But in general, you are right – I am updating the short description of the bug to better match reality. Thanks.

  • Cryio

Cancel the download? Why are the only options Continue Browsing and Cancel Download?

How about Suspend the Download? You don’t need to kill my action in progress. Opera already does sort of suspend the download when the browser is closed and the file hasn’t finished downloading.

    • Sidney Guioy

+1, maybe that what the redcross does, but a specific button to Pause & Close is requiered, also a checkbox “remind my choice” would make it perfect 🙂

    • Ralf Brinkmann

I think it is Firefox or another browser where I can close the browser, but the download will be finished in the background. That’s what I would like in Opera too.

      • Lacedaemon

I really wouldn’t want that, when I close my browser I really mean to terminate all connections.

        • Ralf Brinkmann

Therefor there should be a question, if you want to terminate or to finish the download.

          • Lacedaemon

If I want to let the download finish I ‘ll just return to the browser, nothing should be running in the background, and the reason is obvious, for saving bandwidth resources. Imagine sharing an internet connection and someone to have forgotten downloading a huge archive, creating lag and displeasure to everyone else.

    • Leonardo Gomes

DNA-43433 [Windows][Linux] Notify user of resumed .opdownload

Doesn’t this mean that Opera can resume downloads? If so then i guess that you can resume your download when you start Opera again.

      • Aneta Reluga

        That’s right.
Also, please remember that this feature is under development, so please please do not make too hasty assumptions about its behaviour (this was a general remark, not to you Leonardo but to Cryio and others too)

        • Cryio

I just wanted to highlight the fact that the implementation is ruining a current working function.

When I want to close the browser, now it prompts me to a) do not close the browser or b) close the browser, while canceling downloads.

In Opera 32, stable, closing the browser simply suspends any downloads. Opening the browser and pressing resume download does exactly that.

  • Sidney Guioy

So if this is the new developer icon, what color will be used for opera beta/next ? ( as beta/next used to be grey and dev blue )

  • Sidney Guioy

Also, Middle mouse click on speedDial item remove button should NOT remove the item ( as in this context, middle button is used to open and not remove and left clic on that button is enough for the few time you want to remove item ), it happens to me to remove items when i open quickly many elements ><'

    • Rafał Chłodnicki

Should be fixed in next release.

BTW. Deleted speed dial items end up in trash with #bookmarks-api-on-speed-dial flag enabled (which is the case in current developer builds).

      • Sidney Guioy

Oh cool !! i will enable that then, thanks !

  • Nekomajin43

Sooo, how about a general warning on quit? Even without downloads, using the window control X, or a shortcut…

    • Davey126

+1 for general warning on quit (make it optional). More than a few cursing fits when I accidentally click ‘X’ with many tabs open. I have enabled various flags to slow the tab reload but it still takes time and refreshes many pages with undesirable side effects. Irksome and avoidable. One IE feature that I sorely miss.

      • Nekomajin43

It is a real pain in the ass when you accidentally close the browser while playing an online game.

      • Ricardo J. Barberis

Yes, please! I was about to make the same request, I can’t count the times I accidentally hit Ctrl+Q instead of Ctrl+W

Maybe I should get an AZERTY keyboard 😉

      • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

Thanks for your suggestions. We are listening and collecting them.

  • xxxhugo

Hello, also in this build downloading any file causes browser crashing in Windows 10.

    • Ralf Brinkmann

Not here (W10x64). Maybe any extension causes the crash?

      • xxxhugo

I found the problem: there is some conflict with Qihoo 360 Total security essentials antivirus (opera crashes also without any installed extension). After antivirus uninstalling (disabling did not help) downloading in Opera is without crash. But interesting is, that only Opera developer crashing, not beta or stable.

  • catup

The new icon is too small when showed in the taskbar.

  • http://www.lalaurette.com.ar/ Sebastián Lalaurette

Alt+Enter in the address bar still broken. Is this considered a “special character”? If not, I’d better file a bug.

    • Leonardo Gomes

      It’s known.

      • http://www.lalaurette.com.ar/ Sebastián Lalaurette

Are you talking about the “special characters” issue in this post? Because that’s what I wanted to clarify. Technically it’s a key combo, not a character.

        • Aneta Reluga

No, these two are separate, filed (internally) as DNA-44543 and DNA-44546 respectively.

          • http://www.lalaurette.com.ar/ Sebastián Lalaurette

            Ah, OK, thanks!

  • Lacedaemon

*Opening a new window and then closing it (with ‘x’ button) makes the other window unresponsive.

*”DNA-40757 [Win] Black titlebar in private window” is still not fixed. See video: http://sendvid.com/h3uvk20z

*Try opening some links in the background and then access them. It flashes white. (blinks) http://forums.gearboxsoftware.com/c/borderlands-2/bl2-general-discussion Happening in all streams FOR AGES.
When in the name of […] are we going to see improvements in the browsing experience area which is #1 of importance… WHEN??? @zhenisbeisekov?

    • SuperTommy

The unresponsive window, does it freeze if you turn off hardware acceleration in settings? That fixed it for me, among other problems with unresponsive UI. Something is not working correctly after this build.

      • Lacedaemon

You are right, it doesn’t freeze if you turn HA off.

  • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

If more than one opera://about/ tab is active (from 34.0.2011.0) with notifications to update to newer build there will be duplicate notifications

  • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

Strange Opera developer bug in the update process, it should not kill the dock to update and send all Opera stable windows to show (rather than leave them minimized in the dock)

    • Radek Rzepecki

we kill the dock to make sure you get the new icon straight after the upgrade, as for the windows not being minimised after the Dock comes back, it seems that it’s related to Dock itself because it happens with all other apps as well.

      • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

HP has the same defect with their software (they kill the dock and it is not for a new icon), when you force kill the dock you force all minimized windows from all apps to show all at one time (which on some times can cause lock ups)

      • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

It does not help if I don’t keep Opera Developer in the dock, the icon would be update on next start of Opera Developer

  • Nerdebeu

With small buttons in task bar, new icon is too small :

    http://imgur.com/b9rweQ2 (at right)

    • SuperTommy

      Agree!

    • Lacedaemon

and too ugly, just a look at your taskbar proves it easily.

      • Nerdebeu

I’m not very demanding on the aesthetics, but the size is frankly ridiculous.

    • ayespy

Got to admit – it’s pretty stinking tiny…

    • Aneta Reluga

Thanks for your reports – it’s already being looked at.

      • Nerdebeu

I’ll sleep better. Last night, I dreamed of very small “O”. It was everywhere, everywhere, everywhere. A nightmare XD

        • Aneta Reluga

I can see a fanart video of this in my imagination. In addition, they all are horribly singing “Happy Birthday”, each to a different false key.

          • Nerdebeu

Your imagination is more terrifying than mine brrrrrrr

  • x a

So you show the first members of a speed dial group in the 4-by-4 folder thumbnails instead of the formerly shown latest entries?

    • Leonardo Gomes

IIRC it has always been like this.

      • Lacedaemon

Not really, it was always showing the last 4.

      • ayespy

It always showed the last four.

    • Rafał Chłodnicki

Yes, it has changed a bit for consistency reasons. Now they are displayed in their original order and new items are added at the beginning (same as in bookmark manager).

  • Lacedaemon

Changing theme right above (or close to a side of) a thumbnail in SD and performing a mouse gesture for opening a new tab opens the thumbnail’s link. See video:
    http://sendvid.com/a5dolwhd

  • Ghirahim

New icon is too … round for my taste.

    • modemjunkie

Agreed. I’ve lived with a lot of Os since 1996 but this remind me of a wire mesh donut.

    • Frode P. Bergsager

Hopefully it will not end up golden with inscriptions on the inside of the ring…

    • Lacedaemon

it’s… one ring to rule them all… great thinking right? no…

  • Ralf Brinkmann

All other browsers open the page http://www.swr3.de with the upper part opened, so that you can see the song list, weather and the moderator’s face. Only in Opera you have to click the radio symbol below the menu “Events” first and when you reload the page it’s collapsed again. I have tried to disable all extensions but the result is the same. W10x64.

    • Leonardo Gomes

      http://s4.postimg.org/8t2nrzh7h/swr3.png

You mean that one? If so it seems to be working fine here.

      • Ralf Brinkmann

Yes, I mean that one. Is it opened at once when you visit the page, without clicking the radio symbol? Which OS do you use? Any other tricks?

        • Vux777

          same as Leo
it’s opened at start without any action (and after reload too)
          win10 x64 this dev
only relevant addon that I have (for blocking something) is Ghostery

          • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

I’ve also checked on Win7 and seems to be fine. @ralfbrinkmann:disqus what’s your OS?

          • Ralf Brinkmann

I run Opera under W10x64 and as standalone installation. I have reset all flags to standard now, deleted all cookies from that website (swr3) and all flash contents and restarted. No improvement. When I restart Opera with a new, empty profile folder everything works fine. What is the difference between a normal tab or window and a private window? I think it must be something in the settings then.

          • Ralf Brinkmann

I don’t know if still anybody is reading this, but I wanted to inform you about my progress. I did’nt know what is the difference between normal window and private window except the fact, that the private window does not record any actions. I have tried to clear the cache and cookies a lot and restartet Opera every time. I also tried to reset everything in the settings back to the standard settings after installation, but nothing helped. Today I used the tool “Reload All Tabs” (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/reload-all-tabs/midkcinmplflbiflboepnahkboeonkam) which I have installed in my Opera. This tool really cleares the cache of each page and reloads it. And suddenly it worked!!! I still don’t know which setting in the flags or the normal settings caused the problem, but it seems to be fact that the standard “Clear browser data” does not delete everything in a proper way. I have seen, that after using this way there were still a lot of cookies, flash cookies and so on that should have deleted. So I think it would be a good idea to examine this part of Opera again, dear developers.

          • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

Yes, I’m reading this Ralf 🙂 Thank you for your response. I’ll push this to our developer to further investigation.

          • Ralf Brinkmann

Today I have deleted everything and done a clean install (standalone installation again) and only saved back, what is desribed in http://help.opera.com/opera/Windows/1918/de/solutions.html#backup. The same problem. I think I give up.

        • x a

Same here: Expanded without interaction. [Win10/64bit, this build.]

        • Leonardo Gomes

Yep, it looked that way just by loading the page.

I have Windows 10 x64 build 10565, if that matters.

Any flag status changed? Does it works on a private window?

          • Ralf Brinkmann

Yes, in a private window it works as it should. I think I have to reinstall a clean Opera. 🙁 Tomorrow.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Usually it means that an extension may be causing the issue.

Try checking again with extensios disabled. Restart Opera after have disabled them just in case.

          • Ralf Brinkmann

No, did not help. So maybe it’s any flag I have changed. Difficult to find out which one.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Reset the flags then. If it helps you can then enable one by one to find the one to blame.

          • Vux777
          • Ralf Brinkmann

Oh, thank you! That will help me.

Edit: No, did not help. It tried to reset all 6 changes one by one and restart Opera and I tried to reset everything to standard and restart then. The same problem, even if I also disabled all extensions. Only with a private window the page works fine.

          • Vux777

then it’s something about history/cookies/site data

I would od a clean install

if you don’t want that, try searching for cookies and delete them individually

            http://prntscr.com/8ti6e7

    • Mateusz Madej

I’ve tried to reproduce this but failed. I see the upper menu all the time, even when I hide it and refresh page it’ll show. Anyway, what you can try is to use Shift+F5. Maybe that will solve it for you 🙂

      • Ralf Brinkmann

Hi Mateusz, thank you for your answer. Shift-F5 is always the first thing I try, but unfortunately I see never a success. Mostly I have the feeling, that Shift-F5 does the same as pure F5. The only thing that helped is the extension “Reload All Tabs”. That does really a reload.

  • Biohazard

    DNA-44479 thank for fix this.

    • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

      You’re welcome 🙂

  • Mike

Middle clicking multiple speed dial entries – pretty sure this would open the tabs like SD|1|2|3 etc, whereas now its SD|3|2|1 – is this intentional or a bug or a setting somewhere?

    • Rafał Chłodnicki

      Reported DNA-44848 for it.

  • Kev87

Nice new build! The new logo will take some time to get used to, but I like it so far 🙂

    • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

      Nice to hear 🙂

  • http://vinczej.blogspot.hu vinczej

I glorify the “Alert on Download in Progress” feature. But I prefered, if I had the “Alert on Exit” feature. I become crazy, if I close accidentally Opera in the congestion of “Red X-s” on the right top. 🙁

    • Marko Koivuniemi

I agree. Luckily there is open recent windows which have saved my day many times. (I have regular 3 windows and about 150 tabs always open)

      • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

Thanks for your comments. We are listening and collecting your ideas/ feature requests.

      • Nekomajin43

Recently closed tabs do not help you when you play an online game and loose your mission. You can even loose money.

But it also can be a problem when you loose your session on a site and you have to log in again. Not to mention two-step authentication…

  • Opera

What about the scroll bars on Windows 10?

    • Leonardo Gomes

      What’s wrong with them?

      • Damian eDameXxX Stępnik

        They have Winows 98-style 🙂

        http://i.imgur.com/YEjTsJZ.png

        • bwat47

That looks like a screenshot of opera stable. This is already fixed in this developer build

    • bwat47

The windows 10 scrollbar theming (if that’s what you’re referring to) was already fixed in previous Opera 34 builds.

Make sure you have the #submodule-native-theme-alt flag enabled in Opera:flags (it should be enabled by default in this build)

  • Юлия

    NPAPI is back
Am I doing something wrong? Flash is not working for me.
    https://i.imgur.com/Adw4any.png

    • Kev87

Have just installed flash and have you restarted Opera?
Edit: I just saw it was installed since september.

    • Lacedaemon

yep, same here NPAPI is installed (and Waterfox/Presto are already using it)

    • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

I am seeing it also (even in 32 stable) Flash Player NPAPI plug in is missing from Opera plug ins (PPAPI Flash Player shows if it is installed)

  • taneli

Still experiencing this same problem as with the last developer build, opening/closing tabs takes quite some time, 2-4 seconds, when HW acceleration is on (not affected when it’s off).
Even with internal pages, like, when closing ‘Settings’ or ‘About’ tabs.

Win8.1×64 (should not be about the HW itself, haven’t happened in previous builds, just the last 2)

    • SuperTommy

Can confirm this. The whole UI in general is really sluggish and locks up.

      • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

Thanks guys, I’ve reported this internally (DNA-44834) and our developers will take a look at this issue.

    ### Platform: Arch Linux 64-bit

    • kraju

Works perfectly for me on Ubuntu 14.04 (64-bit) and with chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra installed on newest developer 34.0.2023.0.

    • Radek Rzepecki

please check if you have chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra installed

      • matc

In the new version Opera (33.0.1990.35) the problem is solved. Thank You.

    • Łukasz Jagielski

There’s a chance chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra installs its libraries in a different location that in Debian based distros (/usr/lib/chromium-browser/libs). Please let us know.

      • http://skobkin.ru/ skobkin

Same problem on Gentoo Linux (~amd64).

We are having here chrome-binary-plugins which are not contains ffmpeg binary:
        /usr/lib64/chromium-browser
        /usr/lib64/chromium-browser/PepperFlash
        /usr/lib64/chromium-browser/PepperFlash/libpepflashplayer.so
        /usr/lib64/chromium-browser/PepperFlash/manifest.json
        /usr/lib64/chromium-browser/libwidevinecdm.so
        /usr/lib64/chromium-browser/widevine.version

        (/usr/lib is symlink to /usr/lib64)

I did some research and concluded that new builds of ffmpeg or libav using new libraries set and probably new API.

May be you can add support of new ffmpeg versions to Opera?

Now I using libffmpegsumo.so binary from Arch package and symlinking it to /usr/lib64/opera-developer/lib/libffmpeg.so.{opera_major_version}.

But I must do it again after each update!

        • Łukasz Jagielski

libffmpegsumo.so is name used in pre-45.0.2454.x versions, I suggest trying to upgrade. Now opera is trying to find compatible libffmpeg.so in on of the directories parsed from configuration file /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/opera-developer/resources/ffmpeg_preload_config.json, the idea is to put there all known chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra installation directories.

          • http://skobkin.ru/ skobkin

            > Now opera is trying to find compatible libffmpeg.so in on of the directories parsed from configuration file /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/opera-developer/resources/ffmpeg_preload_config.json

It’s good. But I can’t find where I can get old-style libffmpeg.so on my system without manually downloading opera package for Arch Linux and extracting ffmpeg library from it.

I have installed last version of ffmpeg and all my system multimedia tools are linked to it. But Opera can not work with it.

So I have these libraries and Opera does not see them: https://cp.skobk.in/1785

          • Łukasz Jagielski

Chromium’s ffmpeg is probably incompatible with upstream ffmpeg and since opera incorporates chromium, the same applies. There’s a chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra package for some distros which is the same as chromium’s ffmpeg, but has more codecs supported (H264,MP3 included). Opera can make use of it as long as it finds it in the filesystem. That’s the simplest way, other one is to get chromium source tree and compile chromium on your own.

          • http://skobkin.ru/ skobkin

            > There’s a chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra package for some distros
            But not for Gentoo unfortunately.
I didn’t find how chromium (building from sources on Gentoo too) playing MP3 and H.264 but it does. May be it linking ffmpeg statically (it has ffmpeg in it’s dependencies, so it must built with latest system ffmpeg). I don’t know. There is no *ffmpeg* files in chromium installation.

          • Łukasz Jagielski

It looks like chromium builds proprietary codecs support in Gentoo by default and it’s linked statically. You’re out of luck a little, but there is still hope. If you’re compiling chromium yourself, you can always add -Dffmpeg_component=shared_library to gyp commandline (look build/gyp_chromium invocation). Other idea is just to fetch chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra from debian, extract it and put libffmpeg.so where Opera is able to locate it.

          • http://skobkin.ru/ skobkin

That’s the problem. I can do all the things manually: make my own chromium ebuild or extract ffmpeg library from some of other packages. But I don’t needed to do it with any other browser but Opera.
It’s sad because I always loved Opera products.
Despite I already know methods suggested by you, thank you for your answers.

            UPD:
Also I checked chromium build parameters now and it seems like it’s using system ffmpeg like other software (“system-ffmpeg” flag). I will try to rebuild it without that flag and let you know.

          • Łukasz Jagielski

I don’t thing this flag changes anything anymore, -Dffmpeg_component=shared_library would be more helpful. Maybe package maintainers will consider compiling it like this in the future.

          • http://skobkin.ru/ skobkin

            > I don’t thing this flag changes anything anymore
            I must disagree.
If you see content of chromium ebuild file, you can discover that this flag is initializing chrome source patching with chromium-system-ffmpeg-r0.patch and do some other manipulations.

          • Łukasz Jagielski

Ok, it look that this patch brings back the upstream ffmpeg compatibility, thanks for pointing that out 🙂

          • http://skobkin.ru/ skobkin

Does it means that Opera desktop team will add upstream ffmpeg support in upcoming builds?

          • Łukasz Jagielski

No, it doesn’t mean or promise anything. But it doesn’t also mean that we won’t be evaluating all the options while trying to provide best integration with what OS provides.

      • matc

In the new version Opera (33.0.1990.35) the problem solved. Thank You.

On my Windows 10×64 it works.

  • Herr Pietrus

New logo is nice. Now we need nice Speed Dial interface.
Oh, and the extensions buttons have ugly low-res.

    • Marko Koivuniemi

We need tab stacks…. Maybe it’s time to make survey what readers of this blogs needs most. For example I rarely need speed dial at all 😉

      • Leonardo Gomes

A survey would be valid only if it could reach the majority of the users. Or, at least, if it was done in a way that could represent that majority.

        • Herr Pietrus

spam them with the survey the same way you do it with the ads on the settings screen. 🙂

          • Lacedaemon

or even, create a Speed Dial thumbnail like those advertisement ones we get on every update/upgrade called “Opera User Survey”…

      • Lacedaemon

Well if you don’t use Speed Dial why would you use Opera, it was what separated Opera from its competitors in the first place from the beginning. You could use Chrome instead.

        • Marko Koivuniemi

There is old finnish proverb which can be translated as “Don’t try to teach your father how to f*ck.”
Opera is way more than speed dial.

well keep dreaming for tab stacks and whatever ’cause new Opera is not Opera Presto and won’t ever be… so what you’ve posted is out of context lol

      • ayespy

As you may know, there is a new browser with tab stacking. It’s pretty rough around the edges, but it also offers things like configurable UI, notes, tab tiling, etc. You may want to keep an eye on its development.

or change for the local google .cl , .com.ar, .pl, .ru, .jp, etc…?

The fix above deletes all, too bad you STILL CAN’T set a CUSTOM one as DEFAULT, at least with the fix, Opera does not steal away keywords like W and Y.

Those Vivaldi guys must be so crazy, listen here, they actually let you do that like in the old Opera 12, crazy, am I right?

    • thatism3

If you’re interested in a partial solution, that allows you to remove almost all of the default search engines from the list (except Google), then be sure to read this thread.

Too sad that the change of the logo is maybe the most major thing that’s happened to Opera in the last 10 versions.

Password Sync and bookmarks tree view are both much more significant changes just off the top of my head

      • jedy123

I’ve noticed with some people, they seem only interested in particular features (tab stacking for example) and fail to notice other feature updates that might not be of interest to them. This is why you get the ‘nothing’s changed’ attitude.

finally the long-lived (since 29) scrolling area/viewport bug is fixed where ie. google drive is zoomed and shown as tablet, some websites are possible to scroll 2x the width to the right and/or 2x the height down or are zoomed as 1/50th the actual size. thank you!
