Hello, and welcome to the latest stable version of Opera for computers. The previous version concentrated on privacy as a human right.

With Opera 33, we want to look at another vital aspect of bringing the web to as many people as possible – making sure that the browser is performing even on slower networks and older hardware.
opera-33-contributing-to-a-better-web

Compressing data for smooth internet speed

You probably know that for many years, Opera has had a Turbo mode that speeds up performance on slow networks by compressing data such as images via our servers, so they download faster.

If you haven’t tried it, go to the Opera menu and select the Opera Turbo option. You won’t notice any changes to the layout or interactivity of the page, just smooth, smooth speed.

Reducing Chromium’s memory use for faster hardware performance

But, slow networks aren’t the only bottleneck you face — hardware performance matters, too. The majority of the world’s users aren’t on $1500 high-powered laptops; many people, in businesses, schools, libraries, universities and homes across the world are using older machines with less memory, older processors and slower disk drives.

So, since the release of Opera 15, our first Chromium-based browser, Opera’s engineers have been partnering with our Google counterparts to improve the performance of the rendering engine Blink. We’ve leveraged our expertise from our 15 years making our old Presto engine work well on old machines, and you can read lots of nerdy details on the mechanics of what we’ve done in our developer blog post, Opera’s work to reduce Chromium’s memory use.

Collaborating with other teams for a better web

We’ve also been contributing heavily to other ways of improving the web; for example, Blink/ Chromium’s way of showing multicolumn layouts was written by Morten from our R&D Department. Rune from R&D has done lots of work on improving the performance of styling pages so that they render faster. Sigbjørn has played a central role in the soon-shipping Oilpan project to improve how Blink / Chromium cleans up memory (therefore using it more efficiently). We’re also active in Blink Chromium’s Security and Memory teams.

By collaborating with other companies on our shared code base, implementing our own user interface and features on top of that, and iterating rapidly, we’re keeping you on the fastest, most secure browser we can build, while helping to make the web better for everyone.

Nice article, but where are the download links?

    • Amazingeneer

You should be able to update using the Opera installer since it downloads the newest version of Opera. If you already have Opera installed, you can go open the Opera menu and click About Opera to check for updates. Sometimes it takes a while for the updates to show up

    • Marcin Mitek

Sidebar, on the right hand side 🙂

      • Kev87

Ok, because normally they are always at the bottom of the article 🙂

        • Marcin Mitek

For beta and developer – yes, that’s right. For stable releases – usually no 🙂

  • L33t4opera

Hi Bruce, thanks for the article, and congrats to the Developrs due to the first release of the Opera 33! 😉

    • http://www.opera.com Zhenis Beisekov

@L33t4opera:disqus thank you for following us.

  • Cryio

    Is it build 33.0.1990.43 ?

    • Amazingeneer

      Yes, it is. 🙂

    • http://eliotime.com/ eliotime3000

      Yes!

  • Alex Wazovskiy

Reducing amount of RAM usage is really needed thing, especially on Chromium/Blink browsers, carry on! BTW, by my experience, the most less memory-eating browser is Opera 12.x (Presto). It would be nice, if you could make the new Opera‘s memory usage the same.

  • Nekomajin43

So, what are exactly the new features in this version?

    • Kev87

The vibrancy effect on mac, the new design of the logo in a stable release, less memory usage and a tons of stability and crash fixes. Not that much ‘eye catching’ stuff, but important improvements behind the scenes 🙂

      • Nekomajin43

Yep, I’m not complaining about the bugfix version, but Bruce wrote better posts before…

        • Vux777

I think pass sync also landed in this one… not sure

          • Nekomajin43

            It was in v32.

      • Cryio

So on Windows, we’ve got … new icon, faster Turbo, better performance on HDDs and bug fixes.

        Oh well.

        • http://eliotime.com/ eliotime3000

Same case here in the GNU/Linux port installed in a netbook that uses XFS as file system.

  • xirit64

Hi, can’t enable NPAPI flash in your browser so I can’t use the VLC plugin. (VLC media player)
    test page: http://blog.revolunet.com/VLCcontrols/src/simple.html

    • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

      On what OS?

      • xirit64

        Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Here i can see the controls but the video only starts when i click on “play in vlc1”.

What happens when you try to enable flash?

      • xirit64

Hi Leo, first of all there is no NPAPI flash listed under opera://plugins, even though I have NPAPI flash installed in my system. I’d assume supporting NPAPI plugins excludes Flash? Secondly there is no VLC plugin (which is a NPAPI plugin) either, although VLC and all its components are installed for quite some time now. “Play in vlc1” does nothing to me, all i get is this picture: http://postimg.org/image/l6hcedapn/

update: I had forgotten I was using a 64-bit version of VLC, installing the 32-bit version has brought the desired plugin to Opera. (Or at least Opera sees this one.)

        • Leonardo Gomes

Do you have the ppapi flash? Afaik it will prevail over the npapi one but i’m not sure if both should be listed.

          • xirit64

I’ve uninstalled both of them then installed only NPAPI. It doesn’t show it. Anyway that is not the biggest problem, I’ll be using PPAPI, what was mattering the most was the missing NPAPI VLC plugin.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Maybe only plugins without a ppapi version can be enabled?

          • xirit64

Could be that, you are right, I remember seeing long time ago some entry in the flags like “always prefer ppapi over npapi” that got integrated in the browser and there is no way to change it, or I could be wrong. For sure a dev could answer that.

  • Damian eDameXxX Stępnik

Yes! I use Opera on my hybrid device with 2 GB RAM so every news of this kind makes me happy.

  • iPristy

I can’t get it to work properly on Linux? Can’t use settings is just blank? Chrome did had similar problems but it fixes it self out.

    • iPristy

Yes, reset and disable hardware acceleration then it works. Thanks anyway.

  • Alex

Help! New release is completely broken on my mac os x (el capitan). Pages don’t load at all, even “about” page or settings page, as well as all other pages. They are just loading infinitely with no effect. I have no idea how to fix it or roll back!
It happened just after automatic update on browser restart. Wrote this comment from firefox…

    • Aneta Reluga

Unable to reproduce with El Capitan here. Do you have any special extensions installed?

      • Alex

Sorry, just found there was some issue with the operation system, skype also freezed as well as virtualBox refused to load. I restarted the machine and everything seems to work now!

        • Aneta Reluga

Now, that’s a relief. Thanks for responding 🙂

    • http://eliotime.com/ eliotime3000

Easy. Issues with the Aura Framework.

  • catup

Hey, some video sites asked me to update flash player.

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Do you have ppapi flash?

      • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

        And is it version 19.0.0.226?

        • catup

I do not know. How to check it?

          • Leonardo Gomes

            You can see in opera://plugins/

  • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

Opera 32 & 33 both have a bug where they ignore the ESC key to cancel page loading

    OS X 10.11.1

    • Radek Rzepecki

works for me on el capitan with this build 33.0.1990.43. maybe your internet connection is just too fast, and the page loads before you press the ESC key? 🙂 Does your Esc key for for any other case? 🙂 but seriously, can you give me the exact steps you’re doing to reproduce your issue. The focus has to be on the page that is currently loading in order for that to work, if you load a page in the background it won’t do anything when pressing Esc key. How do you load pages from bookmarks, speed dial or just typing in the address field? Do you have any extensions installed? if so can you try to disabled them.

      • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

        1) Activate a tab or reload one by mistake
        2) Press ESC to stop the load
        3) Opera ignores the ESC key (it has not been changed in the Opera settings for years (since around Opera 9.2x))

        • abaddon

I confirm this on opera stable. It happens after I open opera with tabs from last session. The tab that has focus will always have refreshing circle. Pressing esc does not stop it.

          Win 7 64 bit & win 8.1 64bit

          • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

How many tabs you’ve got open? I’m not able to reproduce this neither on Mac nor Win7..

          • abaddon

Sory for late response, I had cca 30 tabs pinned or opened before starting Opera. I have now tried it with 12 tabs and issue is not present.

  • sgrandin

I’d be more impressed if you first focused on functionality as a fundamental right of Opera users: user control of tab placement, Speed Dial configuration, the Address Bar and print scaling,

    • jedy123

Fundamental right?? That’s a bit over the top. Personally I think the Opera team are doing a great job.

  • Yuterwen

Scrolling performance is horrible here, OS X 10.11.1. Haven’t experienced this in any version before.

Edit: Looks like it might be the “vibrancy” effect that’s the cause of the sluggish scrolling. After enabling “Reduce transparency” in System Preferences scrolling performance is back to what feels like normal again.

Update: Disabling the #vibrancy-in-window-frame flag also improves scrolling performance.

    Anyone else?

    • bwat47

no problems here with osx 10.11.1 on a 2013 macbook air

  • CheezyBureeto

Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one grateful for the improvements and contributions Opera is doing to their own products, as well as the Chromium community.

Keep doing what you’re doing, sometimes when people have no issues, they don’t feel the need to comment at all 🙂

    • http://www.opera.com Zhenis Beisekov

@CheezyBureeto:disqus, thank you very much. I am happy that you find our work useful.

      • Chrizt Heanvill Big Stein

No, thank you for bring to us this awesome browser.

    • Chrizt Heanvill Big Stein

      Opera Rocks 😀

    • jedy123

@CheezyBureeto, You’re not the only one!

  • Herr Pietrus

I agree with others – nice and interesting article.
New logo shows, that the designer you’ve hired has good ideas – I hope, that he’ll make SD page and generally Opera’s internal pages interface so good that It will be possible to upgrade version 28 and use all these new features and improvements.

  • Pavel Aleksandrov

SO – does using sync still create a horrible mess of duplicated, triplicated, etc. instances of everything?

    • SuperTommy

It’s fixed in O34. Currently in developer stream, soon beta.

      • Petar Pan

        works here if flag enabled

        • SuperTommy

Yes, but it’s missing some fixes.

    • Leo Liu

In Opera 33, you can go to browser://flags/#submodule-native-theme-alt and change it to “enabled”.

  • PaulW

Looks like DNA-44510 didn’t make it to the final release though I see it is fixed in Dev 34.0.2026.0

    • Marcin Mitek

It will be available in the nearest update to stable 🙂

  • Кот

My Opera always crash after i close last tab in fullscreen mode on OS X

    • http://ramkumar.me/ ramkumar

      Yes, this.

Steps to reproduce in case it’s not clear
      1. Open a new window in full screen mode.
      2. Close the only tab or window.

Crash, taking down other windows you have open too.

No crash if you get out of fullscreen mode before closing the tab or window.

      • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

Thank you for this report. We’re aware of this situation and it’s already fixed internally. Sorry for inconvenience.

I’m using Opera 33 on Windows 10 Pro x64. I can play embed video well with Firefox and Chrome

    • Trevor Gough

      Confirmed problem here, also.

      • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

Hi, two things you need to check:

        1. Go to Omenu ->Settings -> Show advanced settings and check if you’ve got the option “Use hardware acceleration when available” checked

        If that won’t help:
        2. Go to Omenu -> More tools ->Show developer menu
Ones Developer setting appears in Omenu press Developer ->Task manager and check if you’ve got GPU process visible

If question 1. and 2. is YES and you still have a problem with this video, let me know. I’ll file a bug.

        • blue_screen

And the bug in condition 2 will (GPU process not running) will never be fixed?

          • Petar Pan

reinstall it, works fine on w10 x64. opera 33(stable)

          • blue_screen

If something works on your system, it does not mean that it works on every other system. This bug can not be resolved with reinstalling.

          • Petar Pan

dude it WORKS. it’s something wrong on his system, something got corrupted or missing codeces, or some flags or other settings. I dont know. it works, its not opera problem. try cleaning cache cookies and shit. I have had some problems with youtube (only 360p) and now its fine.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Maybe it’s something not so easy to reproduce as it works for the majority of users.

        • Trevor Gough

The option “Use hardware acceleration when available” is checked here, but there is no GPU process visible in Omenu Developer ->Task manager.

          • Aries Truong

            Yes Me too

        • Aries Truong

          1. The option “Use hardware acceleration when available” is checked

          2. There is no GPU process visible in Omenu Developer ->Task manager

I tried to remove completely and install again but it still happens on Win 10 Pro x64

      • Petar Pan

        works here w10 opera 33

  • THANVEER

do opera turbo compress my facebook i traffic .i want them compressed 🙂 because i always use facebook and in our area internet is very costly 🙁

    • BK

      Yes it does 🙂

    • BK

We do not compress HTTPS sites.
Would you be interested in this ?

      • SuperTommy

No. There’s a reason why the sites are encrypted, so it should work as it does today.

        • Gustav Ekner

The problem is that more and more sites use encryption. Google is even ranking those sites higher in the results.

          • SuperTommy

Sure. There’s a golden mean when it comes to the use of HTTPS. But the annoyance with encryption on sites that perhaps doesn’t need it, shouldn’t overweight privacy issues. I wouldn’t want e.g. my bank site being compressed via Opera’s servers. Opera can’t detect which sites use encryption for nothing, and which ones do.

What could be done though, is perhaps add a whitelist where you can add HTTPS sites you do accept can be compressed. But no way it should be default for all.

          • BK

Tommy, do you use Turbo? What’s your experience with it?

          • SuperTommy

Yes, I use Turbo on two occasions. When I’m out traveling and 1) my laptop is connected to slow hotspots, and 2) when I need to save costs on my mobile and are connected to mobile network.

It’s been a life saver, Blazej. 😉 Haven’t got the opportunity to test Turbo 2 though.

          • Thanveer

i always use opera turbo because iam using mobile network using an internet dongle .it is very usefull 🙂 in india mobile internet is very costly

          • BK

thanks, this is very helpful to know!

          • Thanveer

what about an extra optional feature . which will make the https sites like yahoo.com to be compressed

          • Mikolaj Boc

I don’t really think we should allow such a security threat.

          • SuperTommy

I definitely agree, hence my initial protests.

          • Leonardo Gomes

The question is: How much privacy and security people would be willing to give up in an exchange for speed and/or less data traffic usage?

When checking my bank account or my email i wouldn’t like to see the data going to a third part server just to be compressed.

          • Thanveer

i requested for an optional feature :/ . now a days most popularweb sites use https . but opera turbo can only work on http 🙂

          • Leonardo Gomes

Right, but how many people would use it? Would it worth the efforts?

          • Thanveer

in india it may be usefull .still most of my friends dont know there is a turbo feature in opera desktop like there in the opera mobile .and i also suggested many of my friends.

      • Thanveer

yes i like it to be compressed like other pages using webp instead of jpeg. you can give it as an optional funtion to compress https sites 🙂 .i use opera to browse facebook 🙂 and i like opera turbo
some years before facebook was not https so i use opera turbo to browse through facebook 🙂

  • Michel Olvera

Hi, anyone know how can I encrypt my searches with bing? (HTTPS) Opera does not by default.

  • Jozka Jozin

On OS X El Capitan doesn’t work back / prev (to back page) with magic mouse.

    • Jozka Jozin

I restarted the machine and it works now!

      • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

So the magic is back! 🙂

Why is my Opera 32 installation still telling me it would be up to date?

    • tumultus101

its the same for me, had to download it manually and upgrade.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Autoupdate may take a dsy or two to happen.

      • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

We push the automatic update on Windows in stages but you can prompt it with a manual download. Everyone will have it automatically within tomorrow.

    • mtet

It looks like a tube! Horrible!

  • Olli

I wanted to report a bug that seems to be around for a rather long time and I can’t believe nobody reported it yet.

When viewing Vimeo videos in fullscreen, the actual video does not become fullscreen-sized, so you have a tiny video playing in huge fullscreen mode with a lot of dark space around. This happens on OS X 10.11, but I guess it is occuring on all systems.

    • Petar Pan

works fine on windwos 10 x64

      • Olli

Ok, then this might be an OS X-specific problem.

        • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

Still there after update to OS X 10.11.1?

    • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

Hi Olli, I cannot see any problems with Vimeo. All videos affected? Can you give me an example or send me screen recording?

      • Olli

I thought all videos were affected but strangely, some videos work. This for example works as it should https://vimeo.com/channels/staffpicks/143161118 but this one https://vimeo.com/channels/staffpicks/143313674 doesn’t. In fact, there are a few videos on the staff picks channel that seem to work, but I’ve never seen a video working besides on this channel. Here’s a screenshot of a 16:9 video in fullscreen mode http://s4.postimg.org/6vggyuz4d/Ohne_Titel2.png.

        • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

When you’re in full screen on Vimeo, there is a button ‘View actual size’, next to ‘Exit full screen’. It probably remembers what you set before and opens video in the same size.

          • Olli

Hah, thank you! Is there any reason why this button exists? I don’t see why I would want to see a video in fullscreen in its original size.

        • Vux777

          your non-working-correctly example on win10 x64
          http://prnt.sc/8wle79

  • Reinis

Where is DRAGONFLY ? When it will be available ?

    • Thanveer

opera now uses blink engine . dragon fly is in presto i think

      • Reinis

I know that, they told that they will bring this feature back but there hasn’t been any word about it yet…

        • Thanveer

          okey 🙂

        • Sidney Guioy

They said it was to complicated finally, it will not be ported.. I can’t recall where i’ve read this so no source link to share. But i wouldn’t expect much if i were you ..

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Afaik it”s gone.

      • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

It has not been in Opera since version 15, there are developer tools

  • Raymond

When Opera v33 opens for the first time after upgrading, the screen blinks once (looks like running the kill dock task) which is totally unnecessary. Also tried a clean install with the offline dmg drag&drop, exactly the same. I know that when you use the NI installer it triggers that kind of behavior, hate it very much. Still prefer the dmg way. it’s OS X. Please fix.

  • Petar Pan

twitter/vimeo/youtube/facebook videos working fine with HTML5 and I belive in flash too. scrollbar is fine if you enable native theme flag. I like new logo.
scrolling speed is as always good. can you enable smooth scroll like FF in future versions?
RAM usage. LOWEST if you compare to Chrome or Firefox.

    • xirit64

Hey, are you sure about the latter? In my case using this page on vanilla Opera Developer consumes 312 MB while in vanilla Waterfox 237 MB, and it’s even 64-bit which consumes more memory than 32-bit applications.

  • Thanveer

    why video compression removed :/

    • Petar Pan

      what video compression?

      • Thanveer

there was a video compression flag in opera:flags

        • Flavoi

If you do like to experiment new features I’d suggest switching from opera stable to opera beta 🙂

          • Thanveer

is video compression available in opera beta ?

          • Petar Pan

why do fuck I wanna video compression? i have 100mbits flat internet connection.
I dont want beta i want stable browser cuz opera is my prime browser.

          • Thanveer

i did not asked you to have video compression okey :3 .

          • Mikolaj Boc

(Comment above removed due to use of harsh language)

          • Thanveer

            🙂

          • Nekomajin43

I think it’s part of the updated Turbo feature.

        • Leonardo Gomes

You mean video compression in Opera Turbo?

  • Petar Pan

BUG REPORT: WHEN I CLICK NEVER SAVE PASSWORD FOR THIS SITE, EG FACEBOOK…. NEXT I LOGIN ASKS ME AGAIN TO SAVE IT!!!!

    • Leonardo Gomes

There is no need to shout.

    • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

Thanks for your report. We’re aware of this situation and it’s already in our bugs tracking system.

    • xirit64

      lol, same here, concerning e-banking.

      • Petar Pan

        devs fix it asap

        • Aneta Reluga

As Kornelia said already, the issue is known and being worked on.

  • blue_screen

Bookmarks sharing button is still missing although it is mentioned in Opera help. Will there ever be an official announcement about discarded features and known issues?

    • Leonardo Gomes

IIRC there is mention of bookmarks share button removal in a changelog.

  • Sergey

Hello. I’ve just updated from 12.16. In 12.16 was an option to add a comment to the bookmark. In 33, bookmark holds only name and URL. Is there a way to retrieve this “comments” data back? Thank you.

    • Vux777

      nope

  • rfv

I tried it. It is too SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW loading pages, and I have few tabs open. Even ther about page is slow to Open.

And there is no graphic feedback about loading 🙁

    • Petar Pan

its fine. even faster than 32. try cleaning with ccleaner.

  • SKS

Doesn’t Opera automatically update in Ubuntu?? it only says “New version 33.0.1990.43 is available” in ://about tab.

    • Apocalypse

      Try “system updates” in tray?

      • SKS

        Only updates firefox.

  • Dark Magician

You should hurry up with native theme problem on Windows 10.

    • Vux777

      there is a flag
      Alternative native theme

not sure why is not enabled by default in this version…it works fine so far

      • SuperTommy

You can compare the ‘native theme’ DNA’s that are missing from O33 compared to O34 in the changelogs. It’s more fixes than just scrollbar.

      • Dark Magician

I know, I used it on beta. But until it’s working ”out of the box”, it’s not fixed.

  • Deyan Aleksandrov

I am on OSX 10.11.1 and my Opera 33 crashes very often. The crashes are random on random sites. One way to reproduce it is to open this page and try to write a comment. When DISQUS tells you that you need to sign in, just click on GB or Google login and it crashes.

  • NikolaG

Why does Opera tile looks this ugly on Windows 8.1?

    http://postimg.org/image/tet988pgx/

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Bug.

    • Thanveer

      looks better in mine :/

  • Chawoobie

On http://www.foxnews.com website, the loading icon keeps running. Clicking on the “X” doesn’t stop it. It seems to work fine on 33.0.1995.35

  • hassanraza

there are many bugs in opera
1st one it dose not play audio in translate.google.com
2nd i just cant watch the videos on twitter.

  • Caffeinated Pinkie

I generally love opera, but I do have one problem. Opera beta that I use can’t download stable builds which is seriously a major oversight. When a stable build comes out, the beta will not allow it to be downloaded and therefor, the browser can’t stay up-to-date.

    • SuperTommy

They are in different branches, beta will never update to stable version. That’s how it works with Chrome and Firefox as well.

      • Caffeinated Pinkie

You do have a point, but it would be nice to change where the user data is saved to so changes to the beta browser would also change in the stable browser.

        • SuperTommy

I assume that is avoided to prevent corruption. New features in beta might create or edit data files, which stable version doesn’t have yet or use in a different way.

The only ‘safe’ solution is to copy/paste the data files you need manually from your profile folder.

    • xirit64

That’s a nice suggestion, I wonder too, hasn’t Beta gone from 1990.35 to 1990.43 before they ‘ve frozen it in order for it to replace Stable? Why can’t it stay at this version too in the Beta until it is being eventually replaced by the upcoming new Developer? I hope I was clear enough, sorry for my english 🙂

      • Leonardo Gomes

This a very old discussion that has been going on since first public betas (or even snapshots) started to be released a long timer ago, back in the Presto era.

I think that doing what you are suggesting would probably bring more confunsion and trouble than benefits.

        • xirit64

Ehm, why Leo, it wouldn’t even be noticeable, plus as Caffeinated Pinkie said both browsers would be up-to-date (for example for security reasons). Then when the time comes for Beta to be replaced by the new Developer (in 2-3 weeks?), so be it, it’s welcomed.

          • Leonardo Gomes

If, let’s say, 1990.43 is a Stable build then it can not be a Beta build at the same time. It’s kinda illogical.

Even if it wasn’t, Opera would have to change lots of things to even start to thing about doing it and, most probably, wouldn’t be worth while.

          • Marcin Mitek

There is a plan to update beta to the same number/version as the Stable, on the same day. We are taking it into consideration 🙂 Nothing has been decided yet though.

Mixing streams is not encouraged/recommended by us.

          • xirit64

Hi Marcin that’s nice to hear 🙂 So what I said above http://www.opera.com/blogs/desktop/2015/10/opera-33-our-contribution-to-chromium/#comment-2332031994
is true in any sense or am I completely wrong?

          • xirit64

yeah but this is only formalistic, people who use Beta know what Beta is, it’s not that difficult to understand that the last version of Beta is promoted to Stable because all of its bugs were fixed.

          • Leonardo Gomes

I’m not so sure about it being only formalistic, there are different streams/branches for a reason.

    • Leonardo Gomes

The browser is up-to-date since you have the latest build for that stream.

Having Stable and Beta with the same build number would cause more issues than bring real benefits for the user.

  • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

A Opera crasher (careful the url will cause a crash right now as of this comment) (tho it seems to be a old crasher bug in Chromium 45 thru 48) http://www.cbs.com/shows/big_bang_theory/news/1004869/tesla-ceo-elon-musk-to-appear-on-upcoming-episode-of-the-big-bang-theory/ (tested in 2 other Chromium based browsers w/ 3 different Chromium streams all 3 crash)

    • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

Hi @chasapple:disqus , you’re on OS X right? I’m not getting any crash on my Macbook Air (10.11.1) or iMac. Maybe those are extensions you’ve got installed causing it?

      • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

Only have 1 active, that is WOT, “tested in 2 other Chromium based browsers w/ 3 different Chromium streams all 3 crash”

    • shadow118

      Didn’t crash for me, Opera 33 on W10 x64

  • aoi

is’t possible to acces offline mode like chrome? i mean when no connection, chrome will show saved copy button

Some videos on chip.de are not working! Works fine in Beta/Dev…

    http://www.chip.de/news/Windows-10-Edge-Nachfolger-des-Internet-Explorer-schon-tot_84897269.html

    • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

Hi, could you give an example? You’re on Win10, right?

      • Kai Ockendorf

Yeah, sorry! Windows 10×64! The example is the link on my post 😉

        • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

I do not have a problem with this video on my Win10. Please enable developer tools in Omenu, then open Task manager and see if you’ve got GPU process visible.

          • Kai Ockendorf

Done it & I have GPU process visible! As said before, it works with Beta & Dev versions

          • tdudziec

Hi ! . Could you see at inspector what is going on for you ther e?
CTRL+SHIFT+I and then select console Tab.
            2. enter opera:browserjs and disable browserjs in current session.
            3. Do you have Windows N maybe ?
            4. Are you in some internal Network during usage of that particular Opera?

          • Kai Ockendorf

Done it all! I’m on Windows 10 Home edition, don’t know if it’s “N”!? I’m also using “Adblock Fast”…I disabled it for the page & now the video is playing! So I guess it was caused by that extention

          • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

This page is filled with scripts so Adblock was probably causing your problems.

          • Kai Ockendorf

I’m now using “Adguard” instead of “Adblock Fast” and everything works fine again 🙂

          • Petar Pan

            i use ublock

          • Kai Ockendorf

just tried it & it’s really good thus far 🙂 thanks for the hint!

          • Petar Pan

            no problem

  • Deonte

Embedded videos still don’t work for me, vines, soundcloud, bandcamp for example. I believe the source of my woes is my codecs which I have worked over tirelessly to find a fix over the last couple of days and no solutions.

    I’m using Windows 10, 64bit.

    • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

Hi, we need more information to help you. Could you open not working video in one tab, and on the second tab: opera:media-internals? Then tell me what you’ve got there. This will help us understand your problem.

      • Deonte

I’ve did what you said (hopefully correct) and taken screenshots:

        http://imgur.com/CsIuZlg

http://imgur.com/KTJUsvH <— I clicked the link of the non working video that was open in the tab which gave more information.

        • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

Ok, now we need to know few more things:
          1. Do you use Windows N edition?
          2. Does it work on other browsers?
          3. Can you go to Omenu and press More tools – Show developer menu and in Developer look for Task manager. Ones you open it, tell me if you can see GPU process.

          • Deonte

I do not use Windows N edition. I upgraded from Windows 7 premium to Windows 10 Home.

Yes it works in Chrome and Firefox, those sites I listed use to work in Vivaldi until it switched to H.264 / HTML5 Codec.

            All GPU processes say “N/A”.

Not sure what else I can give info wise, sadly. I’ve tried just about everything on my PC, my system might just have a bad codec somewhere deep but I cannot identify it.

          • Kornelia Mielczarczyk

Thanks for details. We’ll take a closer look.

          • Deonte

            Thank you very much.

          • Marcin Mitek

It might be also GPU drivers. If GPU processes are not available at all, make sure you have the latest drivers installed.

BTW, what kind of GPU is that?

          • Deonte

Sadly, I cannot update this gpu because Intel does not support it anymore, it’s a onboard graphics. This computer is really old too – from 2009 and I do my best to keep everything updated but the graphics hardware is awful. To be clear though gpu = graphics card?

          • xirit64

i think posting what it’s in opera://gpu would help too.

          • Deonte

            http://imgur.com/5Xn0tm3

            Here is a screenshot.

          • xirit64

yep, as expected, if you’d showed a bit more they would see your GPU model and the drivers you are using.

          • Aneta Reluga

More precisely, gpu is the processor responsible for graphics processing on a graphics card, but yes, basically when you talk about gpu you mean graphics card.

          • L33t4opera

Hi Deonte, regarding the GPU, you can enable the opera:flags#ignore-gpu-blacklist, and see if this helps to force the use of HW acceleration – don’t forget to relaunch the Opera.

          • Deonte

I’m afraid that did not work, thank you your assistance though. I think this GPU is just way too old.

          • xirit64

Was it working for you with the previous version O32? Also when it works with Chrome already I don’t know why it shouldn’t work with Opera as well, they share the same engine.

          • Petar Pan

it’s your copmuter, opera is fine. i hope u fix it

          • Deonte

I believe so as well, especially after spending weeks on the issue. Identifying where problem lies is the arduous aspect. Installing codec doesn’t remedy the issue one bit and blinding removing things can be hazardous so for now I’m stuck.

          • Petar Pan

thing is I’m using W10x64 as well, and for me I didnot encounter any major bugs like this one – just two minor so far. 1)If I enter password and Opera asks to save it, if I click “never” it will ask again never the less I clicked “never. 2) sometimes Facebook Photo Viewer is not centered. Sometimes. That may be facebooks bug.

  • Nachiketa Ramesh

The new icon is lovely but you screwed up the tile on this build:

    http://imgur.com/AX74OAM

And I’m running Windows 10 Insider build 10565

    • Marcin Mitek

We are aware of it, note that 10565 is not a stable build of Windows, it has bugs too.

More on that, build which is considered as final (10240) doesn’t allow “Metro” style tiles at all for desktop applications. We are looking into and we are trying to workaround some problems in Windows we have encountered (in insider builds too).

      (Reference: DNA-45054)

      • Nachiketa Ramesh

Just saying that the 33 update broke the tile and it was fine on 32. Thanks for the response. You guys are awesome.

      • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

I saw it with Opera 32 also, even on older fast ring Win 10 builds, it might show right w/ a unpin then pin again

    • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

There is a new Insider Win 10 build for the fast ring, will look at Opera 33 on the new build that came out today

      • Nachiketa Ramesh

No change. Tried it myself. Its an Opera bug not an MS bug. But from what the mod said, they should have that fixed by the second RTM at the very least.

  • Bernt Axel

It’s using too much memory. On a 16GB Win81 computer it can hog as much as 6GB, around 40%.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/max1cp?feature=mhum Maxim

Browser memory usage is directly dependent on the number of tabs you have open. Close some tabs…

      • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

I have noticed some pages cause higher memory usage than others

        • Petar Pan

same pages more ram on 33? for me now its 333MB for FB, and about 80MB for YT (while playing) ……. well… fuck it.

          • http://eliotime.com/ eliotime3000

FB will be always a headcache.

        • http://www.youtube.com/user/max1cp?feature=mhum Maxim

Of course. Depends on how heavy the website is. What I meant is the fewer web pages you have open the lower the memory usage is. If his browser is using 6GB of RAM that means he has a crap load of pages open.

  • http://www.absoluteteamspeak.net/ KingHawk

Has the option to share bookmarks been removed? I liked to use this option now and then but I can’t find it anymore :O

    • Aneta Reluga

Yes, that’s true, it is no longer available.

      • http://www.absoluteteamspeak.net/ KingHawk

So I’ll have to download a old version to share my bookmarks?

        • Aneta Reluga

I suppose that it is probably in no way comforting you, but consider yourself very unique – you are one of few users who actually liked and used this functionality. And as much as I understand your feelings, I would still recommend that you use the newest version available, for the sake of other improvements there. I’m sorry.

          • Stanislav Stratil

How many people are using Discover, animated themes or sidebar? I dont find any one of these interesting.
            But bookmark sharing was good.

        • xirit64

apparently yes you have to keep a separate installation (USB standalone of O26-31) and block its autoupdate to use it, at least that will work until they shut down their servers permanently. I wonder too did it really cost Opera so much that it had to be completely shut down? I liked that feature it was pretty original, even though I was using it sparsely.

        • Leonardo Gomes

If the service is being closed then using an old version will work only for a while.

      • http://eliotime.com/ eliotime3000

I made a migration of all the bookmarks that I made on the elder Opera Mini 8, and I passed to the actual Opera Mini 9/10. Same case with the desktop version (Opera 12 to Opera 26-nowdays).

  • Rinne Tensei

opera does not use HTML5 player on facebook for video playback while chrome does after disabling flashplayer.. Is it just me ?? I personally don’t like flash enabled..

    • Leonardo Gomes

If you replace Opera’s user agent by Chrome’s one – by the use of an extension – you will be able to run videos in html5.

So it’s Facebook doing browser sniffing.

      • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

You can also mask Opera’s UA String via the developer tools in Opera

      • Rinne Tensei

I know, But I meant that its opera’s duty to stop these behaviors of the site.. Isn’t it ? after all its facebook..

        • Leonardo Gomes

Opera can try to contact Facebook and ask them to change their behavior and that’s it.

Probably some feedback from their users will be more sucessful in make Facebook fix it.

  • man0000

With Opera Turbo enabled, 192.168.X.X cannot be accessed.
    Is this the expected behaviour???…

    • kjxxx

      More info:
      – DirectWrite disabled – page is broken
      – DirectWrite enabled – everything is OK (but I hate this option cuz fonts are ugly)

Fix this guys, please! ASAP! No problems with 32!

      • Aneta Reluga

Hi there, which OS are you on? Tweetdeck seems to work for me, but I’m on Win7.

Or, if you prefer to share more details via the Opera bugtracking system, please use the wizard: https://bugs.opera.com/wizarddesktop/

        Thanks.

        • kjxxx

Win 10 x64. Opera Stable 33.0.1990.43. No problems with Chrome & Edge. I did clean install Opera few times and nothing has changed, still no icons when DW is disabled.

Thanks for reply, I’ll use wizard.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Chrome 46 has the same behavior here so it seems to be a Chromium issue.

Which version of Chrome do you have?

          • kjxxx

Now is 46. And yes, same problem… ;-(

  • http://www.dailymotion.com/playlists/user/serialmania/1 Serialmania

Apparently my Opera version is still 32.0.1948.69. Whenever I check for update it say my browser is up to date. It’s really funny that at my home there are 2 pc side by side. One is 33 and one is still 32. Lol.

Funny. Opera is really lagging behind other competitor. Windows 10 64-bit (WoW64) Update stream: Stable. Please note both are same version and both are Window 10…

  • Michał Żorniak

How to change to old look the discovery page ????? You lose 1/4 of page to see categories ? Old was better. Maybe at least button to hide it!!

    • Leonardo Gomes

It’s not possible to change it.

      • Michał Żorniak

In Opera 30 it was possible to change in opera://flags/#standalone-discover-page and i had a hope that this time works too.
So maybe it’s a time to change a browser.

        • Leonardo Gomes

The experiment comes to and end so the flag was removed.

  • sgrandin

Opera 33 and 12 are currently showing Yahoo.com as hacked (fraud warning, blacklisted), but IE, FF and Vivaldi are not. What’s up with this?

Update: Now it’s ok. Wonder where that came from.

    • Mikolaj Boc

      Maybe someone was spoofing Yahoo.com.

  • 59er

Working fine on a Windows 7 PC.
On a XP Pro SP3 box, for the first time in a half dozen releases I didn’t have to add a temporary firewall exclusion for a successful update.
However, a problem with the theme always reverting to default ‘Raindrops’ continues. Doesn’t matter if I try another default, Arctic Towers, or one of ‘My Themes’. If I close and re-open right away, no change. If I close and re-open after a period of time…Raindrops. Cheers!

I have not been able to load my localhost:80 on opera since updating to 33 today. It worked yesterday but today it says connection refused. I’m running windows 10 home (64 bit) with IIS, and localhost:80 still opens with all 7 of my other windows browsers. Until today, I did 90% of my web app development & testing with opera.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Maybe Turbo was enabled by chance?

      • Moses Wildermuth

Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner, folks. Thanks, I never would have guessed that.

Moe, a once again happy opera user since v.5, But please don’t get ya’lls head stuck too far up the chrome dragons butt. I liked opera because it dared to stand or fall on its own merits, and it rarely fell.

Internet download manager chrome extension is not working in this build Opera 33

  • alvin

Although I have no evidence, but I feel like opera 33 use more ram with same amount of tab of same websites. I haven’t test it properly but I recently use less tab than when I use opera 32 but the ram use when I look at task manager is the same when I use more tab in opera 32

  • pidgin

frequent freezes for a couple of seconds are annoying (have to open task manager and it unfreezes) but I switched to opera as my main browser for good now.

There is a bug on Opera logo when Opera is pinned in start screen,

      Yep, it’s known. 🙂

When we gonna have ability to import, export, copy and paste from “other devices” speed dial entries (whole folders as well) to my current opera? Right now, when I reinstall computer, or log on to another one I need to insert new entries manually – one by one, and I have a lot of them 🙁

    • bwat47

Are you referring to the ability to copy things from ‘other speed dials’ to your local speed dial/bookmarks? if you so can already do this (including folders)… Just select them all > copy > and then paste into your speed dial (to the speed dial folder in the bookmarks manager): http://i.imgur.com/A4MYg3l.png

      • Sebastian Furdal

Brilliant! I’ve try to copy directly to speed dial. Works great! Thanx!

9 months ago I’ve posted a problem with ymp files on https://software.opensuse.org/package/opera – when I click “1 click to install” it opens as a text file, and I can’t install the program from the browser – I need to save it on a disk. No other browser do that :(. Have you found a solution for that?

  • https://twitter.com/Garofanoraul Raúl Garofano

I am no expert on the subject but this version of Opera is too crashea at least in Ubuntu.

The browser crashes completely, the problem occurs when any link is selected.

Please fix soon, it seems an unstable version.

    • Łukasz Jagielski

Hi which version of Ubuntu do you use? Does the same thing happen in private window? Could you make a screenshot of opera://gpu page contents?

  • pidgin

Just discovered lastpass now auto-logins on browser start. Which is awesome

  • mrfx

Hi, can you fix invisible form elements – checkboxes and radio boxes? Sometimes they are visible, but almost always not visible on the same websites. None extension installed. Windows 10 64-bit, Dell XPS.

    • Aneta Reluga

Thanks for your report. I have a few questions though:

      – Do you have the flag #submodule-native-theme-alt enabled?
      – Which websites are affected?
      – Can you spot a pattern when this ‘sometimes’ happen? (e.g. after first visit, or after reload)?
      – Do you have the same result for e.g. http://www.fincher.org/tips/web/SimpleForm.shtml ?

      • mrfx

        – The flag is disabled (default)
        – All the websites are affected (yes, simple w3c html examples too)
        – I had believed it happened when more tabs are open for long time (I have usually opened 20-60 tabs at once), but there is natural perversity of inanimate objects, so now I cannot reproduce it, but it happens every day at the worst possible moment – just when I have to fill some form. 🙁 I will let you know when I’ll find any pattern.

        • Aneta Reluga

Ahh, thanks for your response. I’m asking so many questions because we are basically unable here to shoot the issue, and any result which helps with reproducibility will also help pinpoint the issue. We will keep an eye on this.

    New update – Opera stable 33.0.1990.58 😉

    • Marko Koivuniemi

Blah! Who needs stable versions 😉

    • Kev87

So the blog post about it will be available tomorrow I guess?

      • Leonardo Gomes

As usual in the last, hmm, ten years?

      • L33t4opera

        Yes, it’s already available 😉

  • Marko Koivuniemi

Feature suggestion: tab menu option to move to another window. (Because many windows and tabs makes drag’n’drop sometimes tricky). Bonus would be that you can give name for your window: so when you follow some interesting link you can then assign: “move to Work”. At this time I have three windows that could be described as: Main, Blogs, Studies. Of course good old tab stacks could help too.

    • Vux777

      names includes typing something
it would be better to auto-add them colors
so when you want to move something to another window, you differentiate them by colors

      • Marko Koivuniemi

Good point. I would like give names but color is better way..

    • Aneta Reluga

Thank you – your suggestion has been recorded in our database.

  • christian

Still no autoupdate, must be broken (Opera 32 claims being up to date)…
    Solution?

    Windows 7 64-bit

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Run the installer.

    • ayespy

Auto-update rolls out gradually, over a period of days.

  • Petar Pan

Please DEVS, ADD cookies disabled icon in adrress bar, when 3rd party cookies are disabled!. Everytime I need to go in the options and add some sites to it, eg, when on youtube it needs g+ also to work properly. ON chrome I need two clicks because it showed blocked cookies in adrress bar!!!

I haven’t test it properly but I recently use less tab than when I use opera 32 but the ram use when I look at task manager is the same when I use more tab in opera 32. thanks for share..

  • tlc9711

    Dark Mode please 🙂

    • Aneta Reluga

There are extensions available which do the job, but thanks for your suggestion!

      • Thanveer

extensions are not good.the high contrast theme of internet explorer when the windows 8 is set to high contrast.that is a pure dark mode.

This isn’t related directly to Opera Desktop 33, more to Opera 30 and 32: I finally feel the Bookmark Manager is mature enough to move my bookmarks off Opera 12.
I’d pretty much given up on having a decent bookmark manager in Opera Blink as it’d been several years and the Bookmark Manager was long on eye candy but short on functionality, much more restricted than the bookmark manager in Opera 12. So it was quite a surprise when, after Opera 33 installed, I noticed the Bookmark Manager had been improved and seemed to have sufficient functionality for me to manage my 1000+ bookmarks.

So well done desktop team for giving us a decent bookmark manager! I’ve migrated my bookmarks and am finally leaving Opera 12 behind, at last. I know that I represent the extreme minority of Opera users, those with a lot of bookmarks, so I just want to say thanks for taking the time to address our problems. For a while there I was contemplating the (almost) unthinkable, migrating away from Opera after 15 years. I’m glad I waited.

    • Aneta Reluga

Thanks a lot for your opinion! We are always happy to know that our efforts are really worth it!

    • jules

one of those really small minority. i’ve been contemplating moving my thick bookmark list to the new opera browser for quite sometime but is still pessimistic about it. i just noticed an update so i hurried to the desktop blogs and saw this. will do some few checking first and i’d do the same

thanks tho, lol. your comment helped pushed my conviction into moving my bookmarks to the latest opera too.

I’ve never seen such a potentially awesome product so horribly managed – at least from the outside looking in. Love the idea of this browser but on Mac, it’s a complete POS – here’s why…IT’S UNUSABLE if you happen to want to create an account, login, and use sync.

Within 60s after logging in, cpu rockets to 100% and the app craters – while sometimes it is possible to logout , usually you need to Force Quit Opera.

    HUGE FAIL FOLKS…

  • Peter

In version 32 i couldn’t play gifs and videos, not even vines because it’s said the player doesn’t supported. Thanks for version 33 it is fixed. Nice work. Eventhough the new version made my life easier with some features but the page loading takes extremely much time. It’s not about my connection speed, cause other browsers are working and loading fast enough. I guess the problem is about the data compression. Could you fix this or do you have any solution? Thanks!

  • Angela_K

Just downloaded 33 as hoping this would be better than the poor versions since 12 but still no side panel to list my several hundreds bookmarks. Shame, back to 12 it is.
