Today’s update to developer starts the process of stabilization—to bring it up to beta quality. As you would therefore expect, all changelog entries are bugfixes rather than major feature improvements. In addition we have upgraded Chromium to 42.0.2311.11.

Please let us know how close we are too beta quality, so that we can get the first 29 beta out the door and get the developer stream onto the Opera 30 bandwagon.

P.S. The sidebar feature will be disabled for the upcoming 29 beta, since it still requires a fair amount of work before it is at sufficient quality level. However, it is still enabled on the developer stream and we will do further work for on it for Opera 30.

Thanks, Ruarí, for this last Opera 29 Developer build 1795.14 version before it goes BETA !

    • Well it might not be the last but it probably is. 😉

      • loxiw

You didn’t understand… it IS the last one XDD

        • I reckon I have a better idea than most about what we will release. 😉

  • SuperTommy

Since you’re going to implement the new bookmark visuals to beta very soon, I still want to ask if you are aware how sluggish and laggy the performance with moving bookmarks around is compared to current beta? I’ve reported it, being hopeful in changelogs to see if it’s been fixed. But nothing yet.

  • Wando Schneider

    Still Waiting for DNA-35815 😛

    • Ralf Brinkmann

Wando, do you have an example page for me?

      • Wando Schneider

Of course Ralf. I don’t have the URL, but I put the file on my Drive. Just download, drag & drop the file into opera to open. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9b-B7Dr0Gz2UVE1T0pZYmZKSVE/view?usp=sharing

        • Ralf Brinkmann

Hmmm, I had and have some problems with PDF-Files too, espacially if I want to open them with PDF-XChange Viewer. I think it depends on the other settings for PDF plugins. But in this document I don’t have any problems, if I open it with the built in Chrome PDF viewer. It looks the same in Opera, Chrome (64 bit), Firefox (32 & 64 bit), Waterfox and Vivaldi (64 bit). I have now activated only Chrome PDF viewer and deactivated PDF-XChange Viewer and Adobe Reader on my W7x64 system.

  • Veger

I still have scrolling problems, as described in http://www.opera.com/blogs/desktop/2015/02/update-opera-developer-29-0-1778-0/#comment-1859754990

    • reesmichael1

I’ve been dealing with this for a while too. It was discussed over in the forums, where @ruario:disqus thought it might be related to this Chromium issue. That issue appears to have been fixed as of today, so hopefully the fix will make it into the next Developer/Beta build–and it fixes the (extremely annoying) problem.

Also, isn’t it logical that the “+” button on the sidebar opens sidebar extensions, not recommended extensions?

  • Zik

    Thanks for update.

To be honest I use Opera Developer 29 as my default browser for month. 35+ tabs, always opened private mode and I have no any crashes. This is really stable version. Would be great if Opera Developer 30 will have same stable level.

Can I ask a question? Will you improve sidebar in way of background working extenstions for mail, chats and social networks?

Hope Opera 30 will have some tasty stuff. =)

    Sry my english. =p

    • Sidney Guioy

Social network chats are not interoperable anymore 🙁 Enven i i would have loved this idea..

  • Herr Pietrus

So you won’t change bottom toolbar in Opera 29 beta/stable?

    • sgrandin

      Bottom toolbar – where, how?

      • Leonardo Gomes

Probably the navigation bar. The one with speed dial, bookmarks, history and so on.

  • Lacedaemon

#1: I guess you won’t change the new extremely white & square-blocky Speed Dial since you are bringing it to beta as the default one. Great, this means I will be using Opera for 2 months more.

#2: The problem of your new SD backend system concerning moving items into SD folders as described here 4 months ago http://www.opera.com/blogs/desktop/2014/10/sync-bookmarks-mobile/#comment-1663601061 is still not fixed.

#3: HTML5 .mp3 is still not working in Windows Vista Home Basic & fonts of opened tabs that are in the background look blurry and fat.

#4: I have 8 times the same SD folder with the name of my machine in my “Other Speed Dials” and adding/removing a SD item adds/removes it to/from one of those and not to/from the main I’m currently looking at.

    • Leonardo Gomes

I guess that mp3 only works from Windows 7 but i’m not really sure.

      • Lacedaemon

Now that you ‘ve mentioned it I’ve checked their requirements page again http://www.opera.com/download/requirements/ and I see they ‘ve altered it and state it’s a Windows 7 requirement now, well too bad for all the effort of many months… Well in fact too bad for Opera, Chrome does play HTML5 .mp3 (without a VLC plugin) and has not those font problems that Opera has for so many versions now, so Opera gets uninstalled from that notebook machine and is being permanently substituted by Chrome. Now let’s see if #1 will be the reason for doing the same in the main PC (but with another browser) in 2 months time. Thanks.

        • bwat47

Chrome and Opera handle html5 formats differently, chrome includes ffmpeg binaries, opera uses the system decoders.

  • This should be fixed before go on stable channel.

Still very unstable after last version. Can you extensions on mac.

  • Zin

Since you are already talking about Opera 30 i’d like to suggest to bring features from Opera 12 back like putting the bookmark button (or any other button) wherever i like as it’s shown in the pic http://i.imgur.com/DTqJybt.gif i miss a bookmark like that on new Opera, reminds me too much of firefox.

Also bring back the embedded IRC with more options, that surely was handy, no need to have other programs such as mIRC or xchat.

If nothing of these change your mind at least release the source code of Presto so other ppl can continue this wonderful browser under a different name of course.

    • 5gdev

Embedded IRC will not be available in the new Opera. You can use https://kiwiirc.com/

The Presto source code also won’t be release. I agree with both decisions.

    • Leonardo Gomes

You comment on (almost?) every single post of this blog to ask for the return of irc and have already received lots of answers making clear that it will not come back.

You are just waisting yours and others time by insisting on it, so repeat until you understand: IRC will not come back.

Btw, in other places your insistence could have lead you to a ban.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Presto engine/code is still being used in some Opera prtoducts so don’t expect it to be turned into open source in the next years.

    • bwat47

They’ve said many times that irc is never coming back, and you don’t need a seperate application for irc anyway, there are various web based irc clients, such as:

      https://kiwiirc.com/

      https://www.irccloud.com/

      https://www.mibbit.com/

  • ricksper

Still unable to print. Preview never loads, PRINT button doesn’t do anything. Disabled all extensions.

    • Dmitry Kirin

Preview and printing work good here. Win7x32

      • ricksper

Works just fine in Stable 28. But not in O29 Win 8.1.

        • Leonardo Gomes

Do you have Chrome PDF Viewer enabled in opera:plugins?

          • ricksper

Well, it wasn’t so I enabled it and it still wouldn’t allow printing. I then Enabled out-of-process PDF which I disabled to allow me to display PDFs. That restored my ability to print but I can no longer view PDFs.
Is ppapi somehow affecting my install? Chrome PDF Viewer is shown as a ppapi installation and I must say that I have never been able to make Adobe Flash PPAPI work for me.

          • Leonardo Gomes

I asked because here if i have it disabled (at least the ppapi type) the print preview doesn’t work.

opera://flags/#enable-out-of-process-pdf is set to default here.

Any other pdf plugin installed? If so try disabling them.

  • hspdion

I’ve been using the mac version exclusively for the last few releases. I tried out the windows version this time.

When was this contextual menu added to the bookmarks menu: http://imgur.com/PJfqsrO ??? I’ve been waiting for this feature and now I see it’s been on windows all along for a while now.

Is this available on the mac version at all via a flag I’m not seeing or something? If not, when will it be added to the mac side?

Also…single keyboard shortcuts seem to work fine on this windows version. I can properly assign ‘focus address bar’ to ‘h’ without things going haywire when typing in website text fields or the google / bing home pages. The same cannot be said for the mac version.

Drop-down lists in opera:flags do not open. Can be changed with up & down arrows, though.
Unicode characters in drop-down lists are still corrupted, as in a couple of last builds. Examples are bookmark folder selection under the heart button and SD search engine selection in Settings.

These are tabs that are synced on a computer which I’ve uninstalled Opera on. Will they stay there forever, considering there’s no way to delist a computer? http://i.imgur.com/Qjjt4kX.png

    • GoodOmens

i deleted something similar with this extension

      https://addons.opera.com/en/extensions/details/bookmarks-by-the-side/

      • SuperTommy

Oh, I have that extension, but I didn’t know you could delete speed dial folders from other synced computers (impossible to delete via Opera’s bookmarks manager), so thanks for that! 🙂 I have managed to remove those now. But the old tabs are still synced…

If the new implementation of speed dial ( based on bookmark ) a way to regenerate thumbnail on speed dial ( and thus in bookmarks) is really needed ! 🙂

Anyway, great work on opera 29 and the way taken for 30 is already appealing =D

  • seems sidebar extension does not work. only blank page here

    • Matheus Bombonato

Besides experimental, sidebars are working great here. Try to disable all other extensions e see if it works. I do notice that sometimes 2 sidebars extensions can cause some weird conflicts.

      • Marcin Mitek

We will disable it in beta. Of course you can enable it on your own, but it won’t be recieving any updates/fixes in beta stream. Ruari mentioned that in the blog post. Development will be continued in developer builds, so in Opera 30.

  • Sunny Guha

Thanks for fixing the pdf bug.

    • Ralf Brinkmann

      It’s not fixed here.

      • Sunny Guha

weirdly enough disabling the pdf viewer starts the pdf download 🙂 (which is what i wanted)

  • Shion

Please check if DNA-35837 and DNA-35968 bugs are present in this build. Not sure if I can ignore constant tab crashes and half of page images missing for long, when Maxton and Firefox have none of such problems.

DNA-35968 have something to do with QUIC protocol support, as setting it to Disabled fixed the problem. Stable experiments…

    • Leonardo Gomes

      What are those bugs?

No constant tab crash and/or images loading issues for me.

      • Shion

First was about Downloadr extension popup crashing recently opened tabs with 100% accuracy right after downloading some exe-file. Don’t know whenever popup itself, that exe’s icon or something else is to blame.

Second is Opera were unable to load many tiny pictures (thumbnails) on AniDB until I disabled QUIC protocol experiment (which seems to be enabled by default).

        • Leonardo Gomes

And have you reported the problem to the extension creator?

About the pictures issue, do you have any links to pages where the problem happens? I usuaaly don’t have issues with images here.

          • Shion

Well, I don’t think the extension creator has something to do with this. It’s Downloadr – Chrome extension. And it was working fine before 28 update.

As for images, try to set opera://flags/#enable-quic option to default and check the URL below. Every line in this list should have a thumbnail.

            http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?type.tvseries=1&show=animelist&page=25&orderby.name=1.1&orderby.airdate=0.1&noalias=1&h=1&do.update=update&airing=2

Via HTTP Switchboard extension I noticed that there are no (complete?) requests to img7.anidb.net, where thumbnails are. Could be that this server doesn’t support QUIC protocol, which is the reason of it all. But if you were to access images directly – they do load.

Problem also happened on other sites, but I don’t have links for those. I suppose Opera have to work on this QUIC protocol a little bit more, before enabling it by default.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Well, i think that a problem with an extensioin should always be reported to its author.

          • Leonardo Gomes

The flag is set to default here and i don’t have problems with images. And those in your link load fine.

Have you tested it in Chrome or other chromium based browser like Vivald? It’s a Chromium flag so, if the flag is the cause, the problem should be happening on other browsers based on Chrome.

          • Shion

Either I failed in determine the problem source or Opera fixed it with latest 28 update. With QUIC switched back to default everything works. I hope it stays that way.

  • Data Keeper

BIG REGRESSION: This version starts its child tasks in idle priority. When CPU is busy (100%) it takes ages to load a tab. This was fixed few releases ago and back again in this version.

Where I can set a flag, so Opera load it child processes in same priority as the master opera process?

  • Fra

“Move into new folder…” when adding a bookmark still broken. Windows 7 x64.

  • Suddenly Opera offers to translate every page. Is this a Chromium thing? How do I ?turn it off altogether?

Oh, and dear devs, THANK YOU for the sidebar, which is something I was asking for since times forgotten. I’m already making heavy use of it. 😉

    • SuperTommy

      1. Sure you don’t have an extension installed, or you are tired and opened Chrome instead? No translation offers here.
      2. The Google Search in Speed Dial can still be disabled in power user settings as usual.
      3. Agree about the sidebar!

      • > 2. The Google Search in Speed Dial can still be disabled in power user settings as usual.

        Where?

        • Ralf Brinkmann

Do you have the power user settings enabled? The last point in “Settings – Browser – Advanced settings”.

          • Guest

            Try using
            ↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → B A
            on the Settings page.

          • Yeah, that was it, thanks!

          • Yeah, I thought I had them enabled but replaced my profile and forgot. Thanks!

        • SuperTommy

The power user settings are hidden until you unlock it with konami code (up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, b, a), and it should appear a setting under “Start Page” to hide search box.

          • Oh, I see. I had enabled power settings, but then, when my profile import failed, I forgot to reenable them again. 😉 Thanks for the reminder!

      • > 1. Sure you don’t have an extension installed, or you are tired and opened Chrome instead? No translation offers here.

LOL, not at all, Chrome is not even installed on this machine. 😉

    • Ralf Brinkmann

I would like to know this trick to offer translation on every page.

  • L33t4opera

    I think, that I figured out, what causes the segmentation fault in my case on Linux – if the contents within the “Basic” section is empty in the “Preferences” file (as shown below), it triggers the bug:{
    "Keybindings": {
    "Basic": {

    }
    },
If you remove this section, or add any valid key mapping, the bug is gone 😉
Nevertheless, what seems to be weird, when you disable the “activation-order-tab-cycling” flag, the problem is gone as well, even then, when the empty section, mentioned above exist.

  • “Open image in new tab” will now download the image file instead. 🙁

    • SuperTommy

Not happening here. You have a specific image to test?

        • Vux777

instant save…(in new tab, middle click, left click)

          • Huh?

          • Vux777

            I meant, you are right…
if I open that link in new tab (ctx menu) or if i click it, or middle click it, Opera saves image instead of open it

          • Oh, I see! Looks like a regression, right? BTW your sessions extension is cool.

          • Vux777

            o ty
…there are others, that I’m much more proud of 😉

          • Lacedaemon

            Good job man!

          • Vux777

            tnx man! 🙂

          • I’m now using your notes and extension manager in the sidebar as well. The notes one is perrrrrrrfect. I’ve uninstalled the two competitors I was trying until today. 😉

          • Vux777

            tnx..
I just uploaded new version of notes…smaller font, fixes etc. maybe it will be approved today…if not, after the weekend

        • Ralf Brinkmann

Indeed. I have rightclicked the link “Open in new tab” and the image was downloaded instead. W7x64.

Edit: The same result with a normal leftclick.

  • kabforks

Im having real trouble to get a thumbnail on my Speed Dial bookmark. Right now 90% of them are just text. If I open the site, the “Heart” icon glows. From there I can supposedly chose thumbnail, but it just doesnt work. Adding and then removing a site from Speed Dial doesnt work either.

And right now — for most of my bookmarks — the “Speed dial” checkbox isnt ticked, and it cant be ticked.

    It’s a mess.

    • Matheus Bombonato

Same here. I have to rebuilt the whole speed dial to solve this.

      • kabforks

Sigh! Good Im not the only one. I have found a solution though: Remove the bookmark from bookmarks *AND* remove it from the Speed dial (if you dont remove both, it doesnt work). Now you can re-add it from the Speed Dial. Goto the site and you can change the thumbnail and it will be reflected on the Speed Dial (and only then).

        • Matheus Bombonato

Yep. Exactly what I did here. And luckily, the copy&paste feature works great and I could just clone my speed dial to my other devices.

  • Data Keeper

Mouse gestures – (Go back one page <- Go
back gesture Move left) when navigate into bookmark sub-folders loads the speed
dial page. Maybe it should open the previous loaded bookmark folder instead?

  • Ralf Brinkmann

What happens now? “http://get.opera.com/ftp/pub/opera-developer/” has a new date, but no new content. Are you playing with us?

    • L33t4opera

Hi Ralf, it’s because, that the md5sum.txt file has been updated 😉

  • Ralf Brinkmann

Can anybody explain to me, what the meaning of this “opera://flags/#enable-out-of-process-pdf” is and what is the standard setting? Enabled or disabled?

    • SuperTommy

Explained in short what it is here: https://plus.google.com/+FrancoisBeaufort/posts/BcWoDpEhuJZ?cfem=1
For Opera it’s definitely enabled, I tried disabling it and the PDF’s just downloaded as files, not loading in the viewer.

      • Ralf Brinkmann

        Hm.
I’m not sure that I understand everything.
And the Opera team should write beside the setting “Standard” what IS standard in this case.

        • Leonardo Gomes

Afaik it’s a Chromium flag and not one introduced by Opera.
Usually those that don’t clearly show the default state are Chromium flags.

          • SuperTommy

Yes, this is correct. It’s a Chromium flag.

        • SuperTommy

In my understanding it’s making the PDF plugin an extension, but it doesn’t give a clear detail of what the difference is. Seems to bring a lot of issues and bugs with it though…

          • Ralf Brinkmann

I thought I can solve some PDF problems with it, especially if somebody has installed more than one pdf viewer. With the built in Chrome pdf viewer I can watch all pdf files I tried out, even Wando’s formular, but not he one from Matheus with bold and italic text http://www.tcpdf.org/examples/example_002.pdf

          • Wando Schneider

I solved my PDF problems by using the PDF.JS extension… everything works. But i really would like to use the Chrome PDF viewer, if they hunt down these nasty bugs. 🙂

On the latest Windows 10 release, with a 2 monitor setup and the Opera window maximized, the main drop-down menu is spilling over into the adjacent screen: http://imgur.com/lxxZKrx . This was not happening in prior windows builds.

Also there is now *zero* spacing above the tabs when maximized. Checking or un-checking the ‘Disable tab bar’s top spacing when browser window is maximized’ setting has no effect.

  • Vux777

are you planning to implement (easy) reordering of icons on SB buttons list?
…not from preference file or some hack…

About bookmark thumbnail selection, is it expected that the image tagged as og:image is not suggested ? It should be a better candidate than all those false background image used for advertizing.

    I’m using Win7 Pro.

This is, by far, the worst browser I’ve ever used. OP28 was almost perfect and then you FORCE an update on us, like a rapist, and presto…worst browser to ever exist.

It picks and chooses when and what pages it will open from a google search. Sometimes, it won’t load anything at all.

MAJOR security vulnerabilities. I rarely got pop ups or redirects from OP28, but I get about a hundred a day from this piece of crap update. Also, this then leads one to say “I’ll just find some add-ons.” Few work, and the ones that do block things you want to see, and let the crap you didn’t want to see reign free.

Even LESS options to customize the browser. It’s turning into Chrome. Which should be a crime punishable by death.

Don’t DL this garbage. All browsers suck now, and you’ll probably still have to end up using 3 or 4 at a time just to get as much out of the internet that you need. I’d downgrade, but my speedial’s built up…and once again, these fools at opera don’t make an option to retain those links. Even just HTML links without thumbnails would be satisfactory…but no, stupidity reigns supreme in the Opera Nether realm.

And once again…”we’ve detected a problem with your cookies” just to make this post…but I’m accepting cookies. Whoever OKed this update was high on crack and should probably be scrubbing toilets.

    • Vux777
