Mateusz Madej

I'm a tester in Opera Desktop Team - Warsaw office. I started working for Opera in July 2013 and was an Opera user since 9.5 version.

Thanks, Mateusz, for this Opera 29 Beta Build 1795.26 update which brings Chromium core to 42.0.2311.50 !

  • Dima S

Is there a keyboard shortcut on OSX to open speed dial in current tab? I

    • Marc

It’s Ctrl + Space for Windows… Maybe it’s Command + Space for OSX?

    • L33t4opera

      Hi, it should be “Command+Home”.

  • L33t4opera

    @mateuszmadej:disqus, this "Forward": ["Command+Oem[",… looks a bit weird 😉

    • You are right. It should be:

      "Forward": ["Command+]","Shift+Backspace","Alt+Right","Command+Right"],

No Oem and a closing square bracket.

      • L33t4opera

Please take a look at the line, which contains the keybindings for the “Back” function, as well 😉

        • Already did and we were already aware but thanks as always for the report.

  • Footman

Opera Helper process over 100% on mac with no reason. Only restart helps.

  • sgrandin

Disappointed that you haven’t fixed the Speed Dial thumbnail row/size issue introduced in the last beta build. Maximum number of columns set to 7 and I get four:http://i60.tinypic.com/2dakund.jpg. For someone with a decent number of thumbnails, 100+ here, the SD is now effectively unusable.

    • Leonardo Gomes

There isn’t enough room for another three columns as it seems.

Note that you set the maximum number of columns, so everything until that number is valid.

    • L33t4opera

Hi, you can change this in the “Preferences” file: go to Opera’s menu > About Opera, and copy the path to the profile, close the Opera, open Windows Explorer, and paste the path into the address bar, open the “Preferences” file in your text editor (make its copy, to easy revert the changes, when you make a mistake in the syntax), and search for the "speeddial": section, and under it add two lines, as below: "experimental_thumbnail_height": 90,
      "experimental_thumbnail_width": 121,
Small notes: if you're going to add this at the end of the section, make sure to remove the comma at the end of the second line. You can adjust the values accordingly to your needs.

Alternatively, if you don’t want to play with the settings in the Preferences file, you can go to Settings > Start Page, and set the desired value for the “Maximum number of columns”, and then go the Speed Dial, and press “-” key (or Ctrl+Minus, if you don't have enabled advanced keyboard shortcuts), as many times, as it’s needed in your case, to see the desired number of columns (you can reset it to default, by pressing Ctrl+0).

      • sgrandin

Actually, I already have “C:Program Files (x86)Opera betalauncher.exe” –alt-high-dpi-setting=96 (note: the screenshot posted came from one w/o that). However, with that setting it still doesn’t recognize my setting of seven columns, but only five. See http://tinypic.com/a/3d2j6/1. I’m guessing what’s going on is that Opera developers have made it so that to get more columns the user has to reduce the overall dpi setting even lower, rather than format the Speed Dial separately. Not exactly user friendly.

  • Michal

I can’t open .pdf files anymore. This happend after previous build I think, not this one. It’s just saying “File does not begin with ‘%PDF-‘.” and then showing the URL of the file I’m trying to open.

    • ricksper

You can view PDF’s if you go to Opera:flags ->
Out-of-process PDF Disable it. But then you won’t be able to print from O’s print menu.
They certainly can’t move this to Stable until that’s fixed.

      • Michal

        Thanks!

  • Tommy

And the “Loading…” problem again and again. Do you need help in fixing this? I’m not cheap but I can help.

    • Leonardo Gomes
      • Vux777

on Chrome, I don’t remember when that happened
while on Opera, I’m getting NSL on around 5-10% of all pages

Another thing, Opera renders blank white page when site is not accessible, without any notification like “unable to load ..”.or something like that

        • Leonardo Gomes

I don’t think the issue is about NSL but about pages not loading at all.

        • SKS

Actually I see that issue on chrome. Then I complained to my ISP for slow bandwidth. Didn’t know it was browser’s problem.

  • ayespy

Apropos of nothing, one notes that the comment activity on Beta is always the least of the three streams. People are mostly eager to be on the cutting edge – and so spend their time on the Developer updates, or risk-averse, and only want to use and/or evaluate the stable branch. Beta is the red-headed stepchild of development…

    • Vux777

      yeah, kinda sad…
btw. your avatar always freaks me out ๏̯͡๏

      • ayespy

“btw. your avatar always freaks me out ๏̯͡๏”

        Hah! 🙂

      • L33t4opera

@ayespy:disqus it reminds me a bit the Eye of Providence – the all-seeing eye of God 😉

      • reesmichael1

For the longest time, I thought @ayespy:disqus was read “A-yes-py.” I still remember the shock/elation I felt when I realized what it was actually supposed to be, back on one of the Opera 12 development posts 😉

        • ayespy

Yeah. It’s a hangover from when I tried to snag the nick “eyespy” back in ’96 on the Netscape Community forums, and it was already taken. I wound up branding some of my business activities with the ayespy nick, and so it just lived on forever…

    • Marcin Mitek

      Nope. Beta serves different purpose.

Beta has different users from dev, that’s obvious for everyone, I think.
Beta has more users than dev (that may not be so obvious as I see).
Beta has usually a ~6 week lifespan (as other streams) to eliminate remaining bugs, backport fixes, prepare translations, do some extensive testing and there is no development going on there.

Now if anyone is still coming here and expects revolutions from beta builds, it means that this person doesn’t understand how the branching process/streams/lifecycle looks here in Opera these days.

Maybe the name “Next” was better, as everything now is “beta”, “early access” or whatever you name it. Then again, explain Chrome’s 4 streams to anyone non-technical. 😉

      • ayespy

I’m just making an empirical observation and seeking to explain it. There are a LOT more comments on Developer and Stable release posts than there are on Beta releases. Naming conventions are somewhat irrelevant to my observation that there is much more activity on the bleeding edge and on the “safe” zone of Stable, than on the refinement process of Beta. That’s all. I am a user of all three, and I find that I am LEAST interested in Beta, because I either want the browser to “just work,” or I want to know what’s new. I am not nearly as concerned with how the new stuff becomes reliable.

        • Marcin Mitek

And I think there’s nothing wrong with your observation, they are quite accurate. Dev attracts people seeking for bleeding edge, new stuff, those interested in spotting some bugs, new technologies and so on It’s quite natural, that people talk about new stuff (and broken stuff, which happens on the dev quite often). Final attracts everyone, especially users that are usually not involved in beta/dev testing, so they see some things for the first time (and that’s something that dev user has seen weeks ago!). Also, Final is the most advertised release, picked up by media/blogs.

Beta serves us (mainly) as a preparation mostly. And I think the greatest thing in it, is that the product we are about to release as final is being used and tested by quite large number of You, our users. Thanks to that, we are still able to spot and fix the bugs, see the issues with our infrastracture and many more.

I could imagine living with just two streams, but with the current process we have here it’s not that hard to maintain 3 of them.

    Feedback:
Please be careful not bringing back to stable the annoying white blinking in already pre-loaded tabs with dark backgrounds that is for the first time since O26 not an issue here in Opera 28 stable.

  • LoverOfLife

Hi, is there a way (or a trick) to remove “+ add a site” from speed dial ?

    • Leonardo Gomes

      I don’t think so.

      • LoverOfLife

        Thanks

  • sgrandin

Any way to get a previous beta? I need to do a test, but each one I’ve tried downloads the latest.

    • Dmitry Kirin

      Get the installer from http://get.geo.opera.com/ftp/pub/opera-beta/
Create an environment variable OPERA_AUTOUPDATE_DISABLED = 1 to prevent autoupdate. I hope that helps.

      • sgrandin

Thanks, but how do I create an evironment variable for Opera?

        • taneli

Or use –disable-update after the executable in the shortcut.

          • sgrandin

If I already have –alt-high-dpi-setting=96, do I just add “–disable-update” or do I need a comma between the two?

          • L33t4opera

Hi, individual switches are separated by a space, as follows: "C:Program Files (x86)Opera betalauncher.exe" --alt-high-dpi-setting=96 --disable-update.

Alternatively, you can rename the opera_autoupdate.exe file (find the path in Opera's menu > About Opera > Paths > Install) – you can find the file in a subdirectory, which name is the version number of the Opera, e.g. 29.0.1795.26. The message on the “About Opera” page will be different: An error occurred while checking for updates, but this should prevent the update, as well.
If you change your mind in the future, you can rename it back to the original, and perform the update.

          • sgrandin

            Thanks L33t4…!

        • Dmitry Kirin

On Windows, open computer properties -> Advanced system settings -> Environment variables; create a system or user variable. Advanced system settings can also be shown by running control sysdm.cpl,,3 from the command line.

  • LoverOfLife

I have NPAPI Flash and youtube videos plays ok, but Opera it keep saying to update flash. If i update, then PAPI flash plugin is installed and youtube plays choppy. What is the problem ? Am i doing something wrong ?

    • Leonardo Gomes

Support for npapi plugins are being dropped by Chromium, that’s why you receive an update notice.

      • LoverOfLife

Thank you again! What do you mean when you say Chromium ? (If i install flash from Google Chrome NPAPI is installed, if i install from Opera then PAPI is installed) Win 8 x64

        • Leonardo Gomes

Chromium (https://www.chromium.org/) is the project in which Opera is based on. And Chromium will no longer sup;port npapi plugins (http://blog.chromium.org/2014/11/the-final-countdown-for-npapi.html).

          • LoverOfLife

I know man, that Opera and Chrome is based on webkit, based on Chromium.. 🙂 i know the history, thx

          • LoverOfLife

Wikipedia: Google Chrome / Chromium: In September 2013, Google announced that NPAPI support in Chrome would be phased out during 2014 because “NPAPI’s 90s-era architecture has become a leading cause of hangs, crashes, security incidents, and code complexity.”[3] NPAPI support was removed from the Linux version of Chrome in version 35.[4] In September 2015 NPAPI support will be removed from all platforms.[5]

          • Leonardo Gomes

In this case, it seems that i rally misunderstood your question.

          • LoverOfLife

It’s pretty simple for me (in my case). The newer plugin from flash, in Opera, youtube plays jerky, choppy..That’s all

          • Leonardo Gomes

I mean the question about Chromium.

What do you mean when you say Chromium ?

          • LoverOfLife

I meant.. Chromium it’s just a project.. Anyway, doesn’t matter anymore

  • Guest

    Hi Mateusz.

Działa bez zarzutu i szybko. Kolejne wersje 27 i 28 to jednak nowa historia.

  • Gloriam

Discovery is very glitchy with scrolling as of late, maybe it was with this patch I’m not exactly sure.

    Anyone else having this problem?

    • hansw

I discovered the same problem. Seems to be introduced with the latest update to Opera beta (29.0.1795.26). Scrolling down is a headache (when new content is loaded), it displays some items further below and then jumps to the correct position. Maybe a problem with image delay load. Scrolling up again works fine.

    very slow open GIF 15MB – http://vk.com/feed?w=wall-31976785_75193 !!!

Why in the Ukrainian version of the opera in the “Recommendations / News” there is no news to the theme of “the game.” In the English version or Russian version of this section is.

I would also like to draw your attention to the two most popular gaming portal Ukrainian – http://www.opengamer.com.ua/ and http://playua.net/

    • Marcin Mitek

It varies between the countries as we are negotiating with content creators/publishers. I don’t have any details for Ukrainian version of Discover, but it’s very likely that it will come at some point 🙂

      • Сергей Трофимов

I ask you to add these sites. The creators of the sites do not mind. I hope for your help.

      • Сергей Трофимов

And yet, when you install the Ukrainian version of the database is no default Ukrainian dictionary

  • morelle

It would be great if there wasn’t that 1px space in the desktop version between the tabs and the top of the screen. That makes it impossible to select a tab if the mouse is on the top of the screen which is quite annoying
    regards

    • Leonardo Gomes

Settings > Check “Disable tab bar’s top spacing when browser window is maximised”

Note: You may need to enable advanced settings

    • Marcin Mitek

It is also there so you can drag the window. But you can disable that 1px space, Leonardo explained already how.

      (I have it disabled)

  • Footman

Opera helper cpu usage on mac is sometime just mad over 180% and nothing helps. Only restart but only for short time.

  • Michał Gołębiowski

What’s Opera’s plan wrt. external PPAPI plugins? Chrome allows only plugins it includes, since Opera doesn’t include the Flash PPAPI plugin will it just allow to install this Flash one or will it let users install any PPAPI plugin?

  • bwat47

I can’t get the tabs menu to work in this build, and this is with a clean install (clean profile and everything). The tab menu icon is just not there. If I enable the experimental flag for “Tab menu with recent tabs” it works, but if that flag is disabled tab menu doesn’t work even if the tab menu flag is set to default or enabled.

  • cr2004

In this beta “discover” is not working well. Images are loading gradually and a whole site is moving…

    • cr2004

      O… in beta 29.0.1795.30 “discover” is ok…

  • L33t4opera

New update – Opera beta 29.0.1795.30, and the change log 😉
