Hi!

Due to the limited number of people around during Easter time, today is the last chance to share another Opera beta update with you. So, here it is.

This build has updated Chromium to version 42.0.2311.60, and includes a couple of fixes. A detailed list of them is provided in the changelog. PDF reader should already work, but we are aware that internal, built-in reader takes precedence before any other plugins. This will be fixed with further updates. Thanks for testing and see you next week 🙂

Thanks, Marcin, for this Opera 29 Beta build 1795.30 update.

We hope to have another update before this Friday and if not, Happy Easter !

There won’t be any further updates this week, sorry!
Norway has the rest of this week off, and in Poland we have Monday off.

Thanks.. Please add the possibility of a keyboard shortcut to Task Manager (i.e. Shift-Esc)

  • kunFoo

seems like sync not working O.o

    • tdudziec

      What is your location ?
Have you tried logout / login ?

      • kunFoo

I’m in Barcelona behind a corporate proxy. After relogin I still cannot sync.

  • bwat47

tab menu is still broken on a clean install of opera beta, this is a totally clean install of the latest beta on windows 8.1, tab menu isn’t present: http://i.imgur.com/Ff7vIJo.png

also we badly need a way to remove duplicate devices from the tab sync ui: http://i.imgur.com/vI1fVAr.png

    • Leonardo Gomes

Afaik you need to open a certain number of tabs for the tab menu to appears.

      • bwat47

        thanks that’s right, I didn’t realize that 🙂

        • Sidney Moraes

Or just hit Ctrl + M to make it appear.

I’m not sure if it’s Opera’s fault or not but my Youtube History is not updating. Since a week or so ago the videos don’t change. I was wondering if it was something related to Opera Beta?

  • Michał Gołębiowski

What’s Opera’s plan wrt. external PPAPI plugins? Chrome allows only plugins it includes, since Opera doesn’t include the Flash PPAPI plugin will it just allow to install this Flash one or will it let users install any PPAPI plugin?

    • Marcin Mitek

If you are prompted for Flash installation Adobe serves Opera PPAPI plugin to download from their site. Difference between us and Chrome is that we do not bundle it within our installation.

      • Michał Gołębiowski

Right, but I’m asking about a different thing. Let’s say Oracle writes a PPAPI Java plugin. It still won’t work in Chrome as Chrome doesn’t allow external PPAPI plugins. Would Opera not allow it as well, i.e. does Opera only allow the Flash PPAPI plugin?

(For the record, I’d like the answer to be “yes” – the faster all plugins die the better.)

Also, does Opera plan to support NaCL in any way?

        • Let’s say Oracle writes a PPAPI Java plugin. It still won’t work in Chrome as Chrome doesn’t allow external PPAPI plugins. Would Opera not allow it as well, i.e. does Opera only allow the Flash PPAPI plugin?

We would decide that, if and when it happened. It would not automatically work, without some changes our side.

Also, does Opera plan to support NaCL in any way?

There are no current plans to support it, as far as I am aware.

          • Michał Gołębiowski

Thanks for the info. Will it not work because of API quirks or is it currently blocked? I.e. is there any chance of writing a PPAPI plugin that would launch on current Opera without changes in Opera code?

          • Probably the main change we would have to make is to looking into whatever directory they specified to install it. 😉

          • Michał Gołębiowski

I’m mainly asking for security reasons. Since Chrome doesn’t support external PPAPI plugins, I don’t need to worry. Is there a chance that someone prepares a PPAPI plugin specifically for Opera that the browser would then pick up and that some page could use this plugin to do some things that are not allowed on regular, purely HTML+CSS+JS web pages?

          • I’m not sure how that would be any different to the situation now with NPAPI plug-ins.

Also keep in mind that PPAPI are more limited in what they can do on the system comparative to NPAPI plugins.

          • Michał Gołębiowski

It wouldn’t be different but I hope you’re not saying sth is not bad because NPAPI does it anyway. 😉 This is an additional potential attack vector; since there are no known PPAPI plugins besides Flash it’d be better to block other plugins just in case there are some unknown PPAPI plugins doing bad things.

          • Well (at least on Linux—which I speak about only because I know it) there are no standard folders/locations for PPAPI plugins. If more, useful PPAPI plugins appear will will add their paths. Until that time, new plugins wouldn’t be loaded as we don’t have any way to discover them.

          • Michał Gołębiowski

Thanks. 🙂 How is PPAPI Flash plugin location detected?

          • we hard code the paths to look in

  • 7even

First of all thanks for all your efforts! I am on Linux and recently switched from Opera Classic to Opera Beta, because of the common sync feature to Opera on Android.

Everything worked fine, considering the beta stage, until this update – now _every_ tab is crashing, even opera://about/ and opera://settings/
Sometimes it takes a few seconds before it crashes, but the page is not usable in this stage as links are not clickable etc.

Is there an advice to solve this? Deleting some data somewhere? Feel free to advise me to collect informations if they would help you debugging the issue…

    • Could you set the environmental variable OPERA_CRASH_EMAIL to 7even@example.com and start Opera, then cause it to crash:

      export OPERA_CRASH_EMAIL=7even@example.com
      opera-beta &

This email address will then be included in the crashlog that gets sent to us. I will then be able to search for it using this address as a search criteria. It might help me see what is wrong.

      • 7even

Okay, done this (by the way: I installed opera-developer and this one works…. I was forced to this, because I don’t like browsers not named “Opera [Something]” 😀 )

        nsk@sesta09:~$ export OPERA_CRASH_EMAIL=7even@example.com

        nsk@sesta09:~$ opera-beta &

Hi, I am actually working on problem which you reported, and I have some question to you, could you provide your email address so I could contact with you

      • 7even

Maybe it is not Operas fault, because I suddenly encounter crashes with Ubuntu system applications as well. software-center e. g. segfaults in libwebkitgtk-3.0.so.0.22.14

  • Gloriam

Don’t see it mentioned, but the Discovery feature is working again, thanks!

    • Marko Koivuniemi

      Someone actually uses it? 😉

      • Gloriam

Once properly set up (gaming, technology top stories), it’s pretty useful. 🙂

when we bookmark a tab opera don’t allow to rename it from there i have to go to bookmark manager to do that it should allowed to rename right from there that would be good

  • trader

Hello guys, I am new opera user. First of all switching to chrome engine was the smartest idea you could do. I never liked opera before(avoided it since ever) but now I can use “chrome” with all its engine qualities without it actually to be chrome ;). It was right decision for many reasons so I leave it at that.
I dont actually have any requirements to the browser itself as it is already good enough for me as it is now, the only thing I would love to have in it is mail client integrated(and torrent as well if possible). Yeah that was one thing old opera had great.
Right now opera mail is good but I would need to be able to customize it more(mainly UI especially sidebar) so I use thunderbird.
As for torrent if possible and at least semi decent where one can setup connections and speed would be perfect. Otherwise great job, regards…
Oh yeah, maybe make tabs height all the way to the top of app. as I often found myself taking mouse to the edge of screen+click doing nothing, I have to push it a pixel or 2 back down to be able to click on tab(s). Ok thats it.

    • bwat47

afaik there is no plans to add a torrent or mail client, the new opera is focused on just being a browser.

For the tab screen edge thing, you can enable that in the preferences. Go to opera menu > preferences > check the box at the bottom for ‘Show advanced settings” and then check the box for “Disable tab bar’s top spacing when browser window is maximized”: http://i.imgur.com/6hSAEtc.png

      • trader

Ok I really have to thank you for the tip, its much better with that spacing off thanks dude. Should be default IMO or at least not hidden. best regards

    • ayespy

When Vivaldi integrates their mail client, there will be only three browsers in the world with mail client – obsolete Opera 12.17, SeaMonkey, and Vivaldi. Only the last of these will be a modern browser.

  • Shion

When are you going to update stable version? Chrome-extension popups still crash recently loaded tabs here. And most of them don’t work properly anymore after the last update. And there is no rollback…

    • ayespy

Stable version will be updated when Beta stream is sufficiently stable and bug-free to be migrated to stable. You will know the time is getting close when the Beta updates come smaller and closer together.

  • oic

just wondering are you guys aware that speed dials in the stable version aren’t migrating over to the beta/dev version properly. I have lots of speed dials in folders and none of them are showing up in beta/dev versions. I fear that when beta becomes stable, all my speed dial dissappear

    • ayespy

Can’t imagine how they would migrate over, as Stable has no ability to sync speed dial yet – Only Bookmarks, per se. When Ver. 29 becomes stable, will be the first opportunity for all three streams to sync bookmarks and speed dials.

  • Question: is estimated to add the function of multiple user profiles soon, since it is native in chrome

    • andrea

      seguro entiendo

    • Wando Schneider

I think is native in chrome, but not in chromium.

    • Lacedaemon

If you are on Windows and want that functionality you can always run the browser as another user with runas, or with shellrunas for example that integrates “run as other user” into the shell. Each user has his own profile & path either way, except you have Opera installed as a standalone which I’m sure you haven’t 🙂

    • Create a shortcut with --user-data-dir= pointing to an alternative profile directory.

  • Dark Magician

    MSE and h.264?

  • Lacedaemon

I’m reporting with 2 videos the major blinking problem -that can cause epilepsy- of accessing pre-loaded tabs (in the background) of webpages that have a dark background, which is happening since 29 was dev & happens also in dev 30:

-> Working fine in Opera 28 stable, Chrome, Firefox, Presto, etc…
-> The problem in Opera 29 beta

    W7x64

Please DON’T RUIN Stable with your next upgrade.

  • Vux777

    new beta
    ha!!!…in your face elite 😛

  • zoli62

When will be released Opera Beta 32 bit linux edition?

  • L33t4opera

    New build – Opera beta 29.0.1795.35 😉

    • Vux777

      oh…

  • How to put it back to whatever it was before this? I don’t like the new start page. It has also broken the Youtube plus extension.Thanks.

  • Also, how to turn off automatic updates? It’s really annoying to just change things, without giving a means of UNchanging things.Thanks.

  • formjoe

Ugh… the new alt-tab behaviour with the large tab previews is very annoying. There’s even a delay while that initially shows up…

    1) this way quickly changing tabs is impossible as you have to wait the UI to catch up
    2) plus changing 2-3 tabs to reach the intended one makes the screen “flashing”, it’s a major UX issue above 23″ screens

People have different levels of tolerance against quickly changing content – not having better reference at hand let me refer to WCAG guidelines: “Guideline 2.3 Seizures: Do not design content in a way that is known to cause seizures.”
Opera used to pay much more attention to accessibility.

Please do include an option to disable this feature! (actually I’d prefer to completely remove this feature but I assume you won’t)
