Hi everybody,

We have a small update to Opera 27 for you all today. We updated Chromium to 40.0.2214.111 and made some other under-the-hood improvements. Of note, we fixed a bug where some secure sites failed to load on Mac. We recommended this update for stability and better site compatibility.

We have a rather short changelog for you this time. We’re busy working away on Opera 28 and 29. The changelog will be much longer when those get to the stable channel. So, if you’re a fan of changelogs, be patient. Big things are coming!

Hi Helge, thanks for the update, and under-the-hood improvements 😉

Could you update the md5sums, or even better, could you publish sha1 checksums, instead of them?

    • Helge Andre Gjølme

      Hi!
I’ve talked to the appropriate people in order to sort that out, hopefully soon 🙂

      • L33t4opera

Thank you, I appreciate this 😉

  • Spideymang

Thanks for the improvements Opera team
    Greetings from Mexico

  • No

    You’re kidding, right?
The Pirate Bay, for instance, still cannot be accessed through this thing – no problem in Firefox. And it was the only one I tried.

    • Nekomajin43

I can use it without any problem.

    • Marcin Mitek

      Works for me here.

    • Wando Schneider

      Works fine here.

    • Gustav Ekner

      Works for me too

  • Orlanth

Hi, I had to download Firefox today. Opera, which I have been using for years has suddenly gone very screwy on me. Fonts have got fuzzy, I think TT fonts ability has gone. Also many videos on Yourtube and elsewhere wont play. ‘IP compatiblity error, please refresh’ and other messages.
I checked everything else, my antivirus, my OS my graphics etc, they all seem fine, and opera settings dont help.
I looked to see if there was an Opera update today, and found there was. I think its the cause, after all Firefox plays the same videos fine, and reading my forums no longer look like I am recovering from a hangover.

I am not jargon savvy so I dont know how to rollback to what I had a few hours ago, but I would be grateful if you could tell me how, and how to prevent automatic updates in future. I like what I had and want my old functional browser back.

    Thanks

    • Orlanth

So if you want to say the update is kewl the devs respond quickly, if it screws up your browser and ask for help you get ignored.
Still not able to use Opera properly.

      • Marcin Mitek

What operating system do you have? Did you update from Opera 12.x ?

        • Orlanth

I run Vista, I dont know what I updated from, the update appeared to be automatic as I didnt select anything. The changes just happened. I think it was up to date before this as I had not to my knowledge ever asked before for less than the option offered (which I asume was the latest one) and updated when recommended to manually. So it would likely be the previous software prior to yesterdays update. Any way I can confirm this on my system?

          Thanks for answering.

  • icetom

thanks, is this the shortest changelog ever?

    • I don’t think so

    • Leonardo Gomes

Don’t know but changelogs for stable minor updates are usually small.

  • Tommy

Would you be so kind and fix the damn “loading…” problem? How long will it take? Can we expect the fix in Opera 45? Opera 67? Maybe Opera 19373? Now even the startup page cannot be loaded normally!

    • A site not loading?

      • Tommy

I’m talking about sites and speed dial page:
        http://s13.postimg.org/srduh1r07/opera_loading.jpg

        • How many windows do you have open? I think it might be a Chromium bug or some setting (I see it sometimes)

          • Tommy

I think it really doesn’t matter how many tabs are opened. Sometimes only one, sometimes more. Now I’ve got 10 tabs opened and I all I get is “Loading…”. I need to close this damn browser and open it again to use it normally. It’s really close for me to just uninstall this piece of…

  • Tommy

Another great feature – just move the mouse pointer over the “Vote up” / “Vote down” buttons. It’s so sad…

  • Lacedaemon

Like Orlanth also reported below, latest update completely destroyed the fonts (Vista x32 Home Basic), I don’t know for sure though if it is related to this update or to the Windows update of today. Please investigate ASAP!

    • Confirmed, but this is visible in version 27.0.1689.66, too.

      Windows Vista Ultimate 64-Bit

    • Helge Andre Gjølme
      • Lacedaemon

Thanks, so it is a MS update problem afterall.

        • Orlanth

Note sure. The MS link talks about a corruption in Courier New font for 32 bit systems. This problem messes up all fonts and from what blackcoder says also effects 64 bit systems.

          • The bug report on answers.microsoft.com might be incomplete. In the comments for that one you can read that it affects certain fonts and generally Windows Vista SP2 or Windows Server 2003 SP2.

          • Marcin Mitek

Information about 64bit systems unaffected has been removed, so they are affected as well.

    Big things are coming!

OK, I’m waiting for side panels. 🙂

    • bwat47

yep, I’d love a side panel and/or a bookmarks menu button in the toolbar. I can’t fathom why chrome and opera love a horizontal bookmarks bar so much, it makes zero sense in 2015 where most people have widescreen monitors so its just a waste of valuable vertical space.

      • oic

it make sense to them because they’re designing their browsers more for mobile than for desktop. It doesn’t make sense for them to move speed dial/bookmark/discover buttons to the bottom of new tab for desktop since it requires a longer travel distance for the mouse, yet they did it anyway. On a desktop, our mouse is usually sitting on the top of the screen because we’re switching tab and clicking bookmark bars. On a mobile, its closer to the home/thumb button

        • bwat47

The mobile version doesn’t even have a bookmarks toolbar though, so I don’t see how that would have influenced the bookmarks bar.

Personally I do disagree with them moving the sd/bookmarks/discover buttons to the bottom, but I also don’t think they moved there because of anything related to mobile

Afaik, the reason that they moved it from the top was because people complained about the white gradient effect looking bad with dark speed dial backgrounds, so they made the background solid/dark and moved it to the side. Then they moved it from the side to the bottom because having it on the side would look pretty awkward with the new bookmarks manager page.

    OS X 10.10.2 x64 Opera 27.0.1689.69

  • Alireza Aminian

I know its a little off-topic, but is there any news about Opera 64-bit? Is Opera going to ever release a 64-bit version?

    • Helge Andre Gjølme

No concrete news regarding this yet.

  • SebBot

Please fix the problem of the folders appearing greyed out in the new Start screen. It looks really annoying.

    • Leonardo Gomes

New start page is being redesigned. You can disable it for now.

  • Utkarsh Sharma

when i open a link in new tab, it is stuck at about:blank for a few seconds. May be because i have 20 extensions?

  • Connie Orloff

Unfortunately, I cannot use version 27 at my office with a proxy server, because sites are loading very long (bug DNA-24916). For example, it take 135 seconds for loading opera.com. This problem was in version 15-23 (or 22); it have gone in versions 24-26, and return in version 27,28,29.

    • Connie Orloff

I think I find an issue of my problem.
When I mark “Use proxy for local servers” in “Settings”->”Browser” everything works fine in opera 27-29.
      Hope it’s help someone.

  • keiferhelms

CSS animations and buttons not always displaying correctly for me. I thought this update might fix it but it didnt.
I just figured out CSS was the issue so Im not exactly sure when it started but its been recently.

This page does not display the output preview and the buttons at the bottom of the page dont work either.

This is a screenshot of mine.

This screenshot is in Firefox and all animation/buttons work.
    http://www.imagesup.net/?di=11142394822112

The case is the same for these 2 examples too.

    http://codepen.io/Responsive/pen/raNrEW

In fact, http://www.imagesup.net didnt work in my opera either but was fine in Firefox.

It used to work then after a recent update it stopped.

    How do i fix it?

  • UMaster 7

using HTML5 players (youtube, massengeschmack.tv, …) and holding down the ctrl-button make the audio scratchy, no matter which Opera tab is focused. As long as you hold crtl, the audio is scatching. After that (no more crtl button down) everything sounds normal again.

    No problems in flash players.

  • Steffen Stranden

Am I the only one with huge lags and freezes whenever I try to load gifs? That entire tab just hangs and stutters for ever. It has done this for many releases. I tried a new fresh install of the 27 stable but it’s all the same.

  • Mick Klass

So I am still using Opera 12.4 on my Mac, because when I tried the new version a few months ago, I hated what had been done to the bookmarks. Has anything been done with any of the versions over the past few months to restore the functionality of the bookmarks, and not lose the organizational structure when changing from 12.4??

  • L33t4opera

New update for Opera stable: 27.0.1689.76 😉

  • Jeff

I’ve noticed that font rendering is not as sharp as in Firefox. Since I spend a lot of time at work online, I’m getting frequent eyestrain headaches from reading text in Opera and find myself having to jump to another browser throughout the day. Is there anything that can be done to clean up the text? That’s the big thing that keeps me from using only Opera right now.

  • Sven Erik Lamo

  • RegularGuy55

I upgraded to 27 and it was a disaster. Opera made itself my default browser (without asking permission). It made itself my email client (without asking permission), and many of the previous features I used Opera for are gone. I couldn’t change the Speed Dial layout in the new version, the ‘auto-refresh’ function is gone, so is a simple way to delete private data between sessions, etc.

I had to delete the new version, then use a System Restore point to get my original email client back. I also had to reset my default browser.

I still use Opera on my Android phone, but it’s not going back onto my desktop or laptop PCs. I also won’t be recommending Opera to others. I can’t fathom why software developers drop browser features when it’s those features that make the browser attractive. That, and the ‘brute force’ installation that disrupts computer settings is just bad business.
