When we released Opera 25, we brought back bookmarks in a new visually-orientated way. With the beta release of Opera 26, we made it easy to share your bookmark collections with friends and family, even if they don’t have Opera.

Opera 26 comes with many more new features, including:

• A built-in print preview
• Options to import bookmarks and settings from your old browser
• Updates to better integrate Opera with the latest Mac OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Share bookmarks

Opera 26 adds a new Share button inside bookmark folders. Click it and you can share the contents of the folder.

Bookmarks sharing in Opera 26 Developer

Have you amassed a collection of sites related to your favourite sport or hobby? Create a share link and pass the collection to your friends.

Did you plan the week’s dinners using recipes from various sites? Bookmark them and share the menu with your partner.

Better yet, bookmark all the things you want for your birthday and share them with everyone!

The links you share show a visual representation of your bookmark collections and can be viewed in any browser. If the person you share with is using Opera, the collection can be imported to their Opera browser by clicking the Add to my bookmarks button.

Preview pages before you print

We added a built-in print previewer, so you can see how a page will look before wasting paper.

Import bookmarks and settings

In Opera settings, we now have a range of options to easily transition from another browser and retain all your old data.

Get a more native Mac experience

The excitement surrounding Mac OS X Yosemite didn’t escape the Mac team here at Opera. We have started to make our product more visually appealing in the new operating system.

First, we updated all our popover dialogs. They have a new “native” animation, make better use of screen real estate and look fantastically vibrant.

Download dialog, Opera for Mac

We also added support for Apple’s Handoff feature. So, if you started browsing a website on your iPhone or iPad and want to continue on your Mac, it is now as simple as walking up to it and handing off the page.

Thanks for the feedback

We greatly appreciate the feedback we get from this blog. We listened to what you said about our tab preview feature and have disabled it by default.

You can enable previews in the browser’s preferences, and we still believe it is a great way for those using many tabs to find their way around. However, if you only work with a few tabs, we understand that you may not need it.

• Marcin Mitek

We have not yet figured out how to save them. We are working on it.

• Herr Pietrus

That’s, great! I’ can’t wait to see what you’ll bring us in the feature!
But what about bees? Do you know how many years we can survive without bees? Not many! Please, address that problem too!

More work is needed

• SuuperTommy

Understandable. 🙂 Sync and tab menu were my two favorite things in Dev 26, but here’s for O27!

• IllusionMH

Is it supposed to activate background tab whet it show alerts?

Can anyone confirm?

Open http://jsfiddle.net/nwywqobo/embedded/result/ in background tab and wait 3 seconds.

Win 8.1
Opera 26.0.1656.5

• Nekomajin43

It works the same in the latest stable.

• IllusionMH

Thanks. Same for chrome and FF.
But it is really annoying. Sadly.

Best solution from IE – highlight that tab.

• x a

• DNA-28837 Turn “Delay loading of background tabs” on by default

Wise decision. 😉

• DNA-28854 Change “Tab Preview” to be off by default

Nah. I hope, you didn’t base it on your survey – the audience was far from representing wider public and worst, the questions/answers were ambiguous in how they were meant to be interpreted.

• Fritzt79

Agreed on both accounts.
+ Late loading of background tabs is an excellent decision. The previous method was making Opera too sluggish when starting up (and also crashy – several reports were sent by me)
+ Tab preview disabled by default. I don’t mind this much, as long as we have the option to enable it (and we do).

• alayli

C’mon, they wanted to turn off “tab preview” and made a survey that built on sand. Why would they care your senseable comments?

• Livingstone

Right, well it’s nice that you finally(!) added the import bookmarks feature, but I really need a classic approach to bookmarks – as in a tree view at least. I don’t think it’s normal for me to use Opera 12 as a bookmarks manager and then import them to O24 or whatever.
Also I don’t care for the visual bookmarks and I find it annoying to have to go in every folder and subfolder to individually set them to list view. The list view is, as well, pretty big and hard to navigate (especially without that damn tree).
Regardless, thanks for the update.

• http://www.UnrealRex.com/ GF-REX

Yes! I agree with everything you said. Please give us a tree! This visual bookmarks thing is driving me crazy.

• PropTop99

I agree 110%. There ABSOLUTELY has to be a ‘Tree’. Root folder: Travel – SubFolders: USA – Europe – Asia. Each of those folders hold bookmarks for New York or Paris or Hong Kong respectively for example. I don’t like having to dig through folders to get to where I really want to go or, worse yet, have them ALL in the root of Bookmarks!

• A. R.

Why can’t no remove bookmarks folders? Did Opera do bookmarks or not? Seems like not.

• http://wiidatabase.de/ iCON

You can remove bookmarks folder if you click on “My folders” on the left side. But yes, it’s not very intuitive….

• Fritzt79

I agree. The ability to add subfolders would be a clear improvement.

Also, while it’s good that there is finally some clear separation between speed dial and bookmarks, for months I’ve been dumping my bookmarks in the speed dial, as the Opera team kept suggesting. Now I can’t access those to import them as bookmarks and I have a mess of a speed dial (hundreds of panels) that is not easy to organize.

Maybe add an option to import all of the speed dials as unsorted bookmarks?

• esp3tek

maybe in version 27-28….

• Leonardo Beltran

Can you please consider add “Open all” feature to bookmark’s folder ? will be very usefull.

• http://www.tbochenek.de thorbenb

It’s on our lists of improvements

• Leonardo Beltran

Good to know, thank you!

• Lacedaemon

What about “Add to Speed Dial”? It isn’t working.

• A. R.

What about tab stacking?

And how is it improving when settings are disabled? Like moving the cache, even IE has had that option from day 1. Why was it removed in Opera 18/19???

Opera’s list of improvements are non-improvements, tweaks if u will, but no serious new features aren’t introduced. Why?

• http://www.tbochenek.de thorbenb

> Opera’s list of improvements are non-improvements
You obviously can’t be serious. How are big things like adding a preview in the print dialog, making a BM manager, making tab previews, adding a pdf viewer, and small things like adding a context menu to the BM sidebar, hiding the imported folder when empty in BM and giving manual import options are not improvements?!

Guys, what means the start of each line in changelog, like “DNA-28830”?

• https://christoph142.wordpress.com/ Christoph142

The bug’s number. It’s really just for internal reference (and those who reported it). Don’t worry about it.

• IllusionMH

* == bugfix

lines without asterisks(*) can be internal task.

• Leonardo Gomes

Or new features.

• Marcin Mitek

Or switching something on. So generally – not a bug fix per se.

• https://www.aeyoun.com/ Daniel Aleksandersen

It is a bug report issue number in our Jira bug tracker. The first three letters are the project code (DNA = Desktop Product) followed by the bug or task number. It is used to track progress. Some external partners and volunteers in addition to the person who reported a bug have access to that number and can use it to reference when a bug is fixed,

• sgrandin

Print Preview is a very good start, nicely laid out, much better than O12 and earlier. What’s needed is…
– scaling (extremely important)
– “more options” as default (or ability to make it default)

– “Print using system dialog” as it is creates big problems functionally. The best way to see this is to compare it with FF and IE. Where they go from Print Preview is to an “internal” Print dialog box – it’s also reachable directly with Ctrl-P. That box allows setting the pages to be printed, as well access to the system print dialog if desired (via a Preferences or Properties button). When finished with the system dialog box, if accessed, OK goes back to the Print dialog, i.e., for printing. The problem with yours is that because the system dialog box doesn’t allow setting page choices, there’s no way to bring your PP together with the system dialog’s functionality. What’s needed is that Print dialog or another solution that links everything.

“We greatly appreciate the feedback we get from this blog. We listened to what you said about our tab preview feature and have disabled it by default.”

You gotta be kidding, this is not your conlusion about the feedback, this is temporary, am I right?

By the way, what’s that person icon at the right that appears in all images? =O

• Nekomajin43

Sync icon.

• Wraith

I think an export function will be good too, since sync is not working on speed dial it will be usefull export all the settings including speed dial, I know you can copy the profile and paste it into another computer but sometimes you end with a little mess.

• netwolf

Any chance of getting back the bookmarks “nickname” feature?
I might share my bookmarks a few times a year, but I use bookmark nicknames a couple of times per hour… (with 12.17, which is still my main browser)

• Nekomajin43

It the intel is correct, they will implement search in bookmarks so nicknames will become unnecesary.

• https://github.com/dqdb/opera-extensions dqdb

I disagree. IMHO each feature is important and they don’t substitute for each other.

My dream feature is bookmark tagging for efficient bookmark searching and organizing (like GMail labels). Now I have to name all bookmarks containing tags in their names, but at least Bookmark Search extension from Chrome store is working this way.

• netwolf

Well, not really. Having nicknames allows me to simply type my destination in the addressbar without any additional steps and without caring about any previously visited pages, BMs etc.
IMO search is in no way a substitute for nicknames, but a different nice feature.

• blackbird71

I also disagree… bookmark nicknaming will always be essential, since only a user can efficiently determine why he bookmarked something and what he wants to remember it by, for future reference and retrieval. Moreover, it’s important for a bookmarks bar since ultra-short nicknames are key to stacking large numbers there for immediate reference… they can readily take up less space than an icon, and can be more self-identifying for the user who put them there.

A key problem with retrieving bookmarks only via ‘search’ is that numbers of my bookmarks consist of different graphical/animation renderings at the same parent site(s), immune to ‘searching’ because they contain no searchable text and differ only in the URL’s trailing term (like /00238WVgl or such). Remembering various trailing IDs in order to search for a specific one is a virtual impossibility.

• Parameter Man

Bookmark nicknames and search shortcuts are the reason I use Opera – I can use it at brain speed, not (using the) mouse speed.
Trying v27, sticking to v12 for the time being.

Hey, how about some important and useful feature, like SYNCHRONIZATION ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

• ayespy

It’s in the ://flags, for bookmarks and open tabs. I would imagine sync for speed dial will be along as well, in due time.

• gorankx

thats what i meant, because speed dial sync worked before they decided to destroy it. who cares about bookmarks? i need sync for everything else .

• Helge Andre Gjølme

As stated before, we are working on sync.
It is actually our highest priority, but more work is still needed before we can release sync into beta.

• gorankx

please don’t bother, now i like it as it is, without synchronization, it would worlds end if you slackers would actually do something worthy ….

how on earth could you have taken this conclusion from the comments here?
People were not saying you should disable tab preview.

• Nekomajin43

No, we said that it caused more bad than good in its current form. But no problem here. Anyone wants to use it, it can be turned on with one click. So basically, nothing happened.

• http://www.lalaurette.com.ar/ Sebastián Lalaurette

I think most people said they didn’t use it. I didn’t because it was too annoying. From that to get them disabled by default there is only one logical step.

• Helge Andre Gjølme
• FZ10000

And what if i don`t need special page for bookmarks and just need side panel like in O12?

• Lacedaemon

Opening new SD tabs still takes a lot more time (0.2ms white blink delay) than in Stable (=instant load, no blink). I hope you fix it until it hits Stable. Vista-32 & 7-64 on different rigs.

• EmperorTerran .

Opening new tab with the middle click on the tab bar is forgotten,
or not available by design?
Middle click to close a tab works. So kinda strange that the middle click to open new tab does not.

• Gustav Ekner

Enable mouse gestures in settings, then you can open a new tab by holding the right mouse button and drag down, that’s even faster.

• EmperorTerran .

I already use mouse gestures for system wide tasks, so no dice
But good info.

• Wraith

This is weird, Avast has blocked me two time when I tried to download the installer.

• noordinaryland

I have activated open tabs synchronization, relaunched the browser, but it does not work.
Another issue: any idea if and when we will be free to fully manage search engines?

• Leonardo Gomes

Tabs sync is not working yet. Maybe in 27+.

• PaulW

Where’s the full size installer.??

• Leonardo Gomes

Check on the right of this page, you should find it there.

• PaulW

Thanx . Got it ..

• NiceSuperName

Wow, I can’t believe.
What will happen with my current bookmarks after I add old one from opera 12? And speeddial?

• starkcitizen

What a waste of time developing all this sharing stuff, stupid iconic speed dial, tab previews instead of visual tabs… Opera 12 and even earlier versions had tons of productive features THAT WORKED GOOD! Why do you insist on creating meaningless things?
You could finally add Bookmarks but even though it took ages you couldn’t implement keywords for bookmarks even though people know this stuff for years and everybody know how time saving this is.
But no… it was better to develop tab previews, which were unproductive and stupid by definition.
At least print preview is something worthwhile, but come on whole team of people is working on this browser and there is like one, two features in 5 months that aren’t even nothing new, nor exciting, but only keeping some lower standard from 10 years back???

• Zik

Btw print preview is chrome’s feature.

• cgebhard

Two issues (Win8.1):

1) A localization string in opera menu is wrong:
It should be the german “Kürzlich geschlossen”. Instead it is in English “Recent tabs”. I’d post an image, but somehow that seems to be deactivated?

2) When import of bookmarks fails (“We’re sorry but Opera could not import any data.”) e.g. because target browser is not installed, clicking the “finish” button doesn’t close the popup. Only the little X does.

• Marcin Mitek

As for 1. – we deliver the translations later, no worries 🙂

• Nekomajin43

How about the hungarian translation? I reported several times, here and via the bugtracker, that the settings page had a lot of mistranslation.

• Marcin Mitek

By any chance, do you have the issue IDs anywhere? Either my JIRA search skills are terrible or I simply couldn’t find them.

• Nekomajin43

It was month ago, I can’t find it, but I will make a screenshot and report it again as soon as I have time.

• Marcin Mitek

Please do so. And provide some better (in your opinion) options on how to translate it. We are checking translations now, so it’s a good moment to file such problems.

• NiceSuperName

Is there anybody experiencing frame drops with embedded videos on full screen? It works fine when viewed from the video page, but when embedded (like here http://www.theverge.com/2014/10/24/7053325/new-trailers-avengers-age-of-ultron-halo-nightfall-judge-dredd-and-more), YT videos drop lots of frames on full screen (playback goes down to around 10 fps). • Marcin Mitek

Hmmm, what is your PC configuration?
I got 6 frames dropped and steady 24-25 FPS with that video on fullscreen and 1080p resolution.

• Thomas Sawyer

Intel Core i5-3230M (2600 – 3200) and 8 GB. I have a dedicated video card, but even an integrated HD Graphics 4000 is more than enough to handle Full HD videos with this configuration. Besides, this problem only happens on Opera (Chrome and Firefox are fine) and with embedded videos.

• Marcin Mitek

For a reference – DNA-29097 issue has been filed. We are looking into it.

Try using ppapi flash, I have had the same for a while, a switch to ppapi fixed it for me.

• Lacedaemon

Not the best solution as ppapi is far more resource hungry (and its results are of inferior quality) and the browser is already at its limits with the current engine. Just try running 2 twitch streams at the time while doing something else with the browser (or 3 twitch streams at a time without doing anything) and then try the same with Opera Presto.

• DenisConqueror

Same here. i5-2500, win 7 x64 pro, 8Gb RAM, NVIDIA GTX 560.
A lot of drops and 10 fps.

• icetom

yes flash is terrible lately even on 25 stable (but since some versions). tried many different flash versions i could find 15 beta, NPAPI ppapi. whatever. somehow it always just detects 1 flash installation. performance is always terrible in hitbox.tv. on twitch it is okay. on my mobile phone S4 it works in 1080p fluid, in Opera not 100% fluid.
My system is fast, 512GB SSD, Windows 8.1 64bit 8GB RAM

• Lacedaemon

Don’t worry, by the time Google and its friends (hint hint) persuades us that HTML5 is even better than ppapi or npapi we will be able to watch 1 video @240 quality with only 1 browser tab opened at maximum and with 100% CPU usage and we will be SOOO happy about it.

Anyone know how to use continuity with iOS? It doesn’t work for me.

• https://www.aeyoun.com/ Daniel Aleksandersen

MacRumors can help you out with Continuity.

With all that setup, open a webpage in Safari, Chrome, or [within the year] Opera Coast on your iOS device. On your Mac, you’ll get an extra icon for Opera—assuming its your default browser—in the Dock to handoff the website to your Mac. Its from iOS-to-Mac only at the moment.

• Dragan Malinović

O I see… I must use Safari or Chrome on iOS to continue working on Yosemite in Opera. Hm. Strange.

Why not work in Opera Mobile and continue working in Opera?

• https://www.aeyoun.com/ Daniel Aleksandersen

There is no Opera Mobile for iOS. You can use Opera Coast with Continuity later this year. I have no info about Opera Mini, but would expect that to work eventually.

• Dragan Malinović

I ment Opera Mini. Anyways, it doesnt work.. It always shows Safari icon besides Yosemites dock, even if I choose Opera beta to be default browser on system.

• Veger

The default search engines (Google, Wikipedia, etc.) use the current locale (I suppose) to open the webpage. But these website are quite depending (Wikipedia especially) on the locale that is used.

For example if I type ‘w vtable’ I get the Dutch wikipedia: http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search?search=vtable which tells me the page does not exist. Whereas the English wikipedia shows http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_method_table Which I would happen to have been looking for.

So, you you make the locale of the default search engines configurable? I know I can create a new search engine, but I am using ‘w’ for wikipedia for as long as I can remember, and I cannot throw away the default ‘w’ to define my own…

• Nekomajin43

Why don’t you add your own search engines? For example, I have “we” for the english Wikipedia and “wh” for the hungarian. Now I’m completely independent from the default engine.

• Veger

As I said, I am quite used to using ‘w’.
Besides, I do not want different languages, I only want the English wikipedia, as it is most complete (especially for my technical line of work).
Same goes for search the other (default) search engines.

• Nekomajin43

Oh come on! I used to use w too, then the problem came. I switched to we, and I got used to it in a day.

• Veger

Heh, then you are more flexible than I am.
I added a ‘we’ engine as well (of course), and I often (mostly) still use ‘w’… 🙁

• x a

What about using this extension: Xeno Wikipedia*?

You still have to re-program your brain to use the prefix wx instead of w, agreed.

But then you have a customizable default locale, plus you can choose any other Wikipedia version by just typing its language code after the initial wx, such as wx de vtable. And you will have instant search suggestions, too.

__
* Disclaimer: I’m the author of that addon. 😉

• Nekomajin43

Just keep trying and you wil get used to it. 🙂

• noordinaryland

you are never independent from the default engine unless you decide you can live without the context menu ¨search¨ and adapt yourself with the slower option ¨search with¨

• Nekomajin43

I have an even faster solution: type into the address bar.

• Lacedaemon

Almost everyone here has faced this problem before. Try this and don’t listen to anyone http://forums.opera.com/discussion/1811332/default-google-localization/p1

Still no 32bit Linux version ?
Not everybody can use 64bit (work related limitations), so i cannot use Opera and i really miss it 🙁

Even tried running the 32bit win through Wine but it’s not stable enough and i cannot integrate it into Linux to automatically open links 🙁

I was, I must say, kinda crushed.

• Arjan van Leeuwen

Christoph142 doesn’t work for Opera, he’s a volunteer and generally nice guy :). That would be his own opinion, not that of Opera.

• Lacedaemon

He may be not but I remember every other dev who writes in this blog pointing out every time (even lately) that a 32-bit Linux is not in the cards….

• SQL

I guess you mean Ruari :p

• Lacedaemon

Probably, Ruari, Aleksandersen, who else did I forget? Maybe Thorben or Martin? I really am not so sure about those two 😀

• SQL

A new game – can you name all the Opera employees! 😀

But yeah, we don’t know whether or not 32 bit Linux support is coming, so we shouldn’t speculate only based on someones word (That is by no means official)

• Lacedaemon

They have categorical said it many times though so that speculation is pretty safe I’d say.

• Marcin Mitek

I’m on Windows, that’s why 😉

• ayespy

Then there’s hope! I will continue to agitate for it…

• https://christoph142.wordpress.com/ Christoph142

As Arjan kindly pointed out already I’m not working for Opera. I apologize as I obviously didn’t state that clear enough. This comment constitutes my own personal opinion.

I was under the impression that Chromium would ditch 32-bit Linux support soon as they did with Chrome on Mac OS (http://www.neowin.net/news/google-ditching-32-bit-version-of-chrome-on-mac). Turns out I must have misread something there.

Still, 32-bit machines will become extinct rather sooner than later. That’s why my assumption holds up.

how to import bookmarks from opera developer to opera beta?

• ayespy

You can now turn on sync in both of them and sync them.

Alternatively, you can simply replace the files in your beta profile with the ones in your developer profile.

• Jorton

Thank you. I chose the sync way.

• x a

Who would be the person to address on issues regarding extensions?

There are several:

• Extensions have a bad reputation: they are considered to slow the browser down and to be heavy on resources.

I recognize, that thorough code review upon submittal of extensions will not be feasible. But you could introduce different ”badges-of-approval“: For example one for extensions that use event pages instead of bg processes (→persistent: false). Whether extensions using setInterval() should be negatively marked, could be another consideration.

I see a lot of extensions in the repository, that *must* perform bad, which you can see at first peek into the code (btw I use Rob Wu’s excellent ”Extension source viewer“ for that purpose).

The problem is, that Opera receives the blame for performance hits it suffers from badly implemented extensions.

• Another issue: the download statistics diagram does not render anymore. I diagnose a 404 for jquery.colorbox-1.3.16.min.js.

• …

• Zin

Please, bring Opera 12’s IRC embedded feature back, i want to use new Opera but i’m stuck with Opera 12.16

• A. R.

Sorry, but IRC wont be coming back – neither any other clients other than browser.

This was a set goal when Opera decided to abandon Presto series.

But my goodness did we not knew that Opera is about to undress the amazing browser from all the good browser and browsing features and experiences. This has been a shock to the community.

And Opera hasn’t addressed the crow about what the future will be, no, but what they have done is they have reduced even more of available options and removed complete features (of a browser) without no explanation.

• http://www.DH2Publishing.info/Blogged Dierk

Flash Player [here: Adobe’s] in full screen renders very slow with 26, worked fine with 25 this morning [example: Daily Show or Colbert Report on their own sites]. HTML5 videos [embed as Deke McClelland's on Deke.com or on YouTube work fine].

new bkm manager (ext) from Google looks almost identical to Opera visual bookmarks
I guess this is a work of O-devs
gz on that, Opera was always pioneer in browser tech/UI/features

…I still like old school bkm’s more 🙂

• Lacedaemon

Let’s see if that is true: Google BKM vs. Opera Stable BKM

*Google will suggest a folder if it seems like it could be a fit.: Not in Opera

*Quickly find that elusive page with search powered by Google, which looks not only at the bookmark title and snippet, but also the bookmarked page’s content. : Not in Opera

*Your existing bookmarks will automatically get updated with images and descriptions, wherever possible.: Not in Opera

*Share: Have a folder of favorite bookmarks? You can make it public and share the link with whomever you’d like to access it. Everything else will remain private.: Not in Opera

• Vux777

ouch…
seems that I didn’t just miss the point, but freaking continent -_-

but why would that feature first come in Opera?
they must have something to do with it…

• Lacedaemon

I don’t know why but them wanting so desperately to rush it out like that, in such an unfinished state before Google did has to mean something. And something bad I’d say, just like the Print Preview that is supposed to be Opera’s but it is Chrome’s native.

• Vux777

maybe you are too hard on them
they do contribute on Blink development largely, so it might be their work/idea/whatever…

• Lacedaemon

That doesn’t make any sense. If it’s yours you patent it, you are ahead in features, in development, in functionaluty, something!, you don’t rush it like that out of the door…

• Vux777

well, who ever did it, I don’t like it
It looks cool and all that, but… when 10 or so bookmarks cover my whole screen, it’s not very useful (in thumbnails mode, and G-ext supports only that)

ps. I don’t think that visual bookmarks feature is patentable

• Lacedaemon

Perhaps not, but some kind of company-related internal agreement or a memorandum, something at least could be possible, which clearly here is not the case.

• Herr Pietrus

It’s really interesting whose project it was… And it doesn’t look good from the perspective of Opera users…

• Vux777

yea, but still… maybe they are working together on it…
anyway, until someone from officials say something about it, we can only speculate

btw. If you are right, it would mean that Opera became something like test polygon for Chrome experiments, instead of being independent… doesn’t feel right :/

• escruting

An Opera developer expressed his thoughts on this, and the conclusion is not very pretty or humble from operas point of view…

“There are only so many ways to make a bookmark manager … the idea to have a small image describing the bookmark is something we experimented with since O12 actually. If you look closer you will see many differences between the Google Stars experiment – which you are by the way seeing, the link does not explain Chrome bookmarks – and the upcoming Opera Bookmarks. You could as well say we copied everything from Pinterest or Icebergs – or Google did 😉

Anyway, this is something for the future, bookmarks will be included in Opera 25.”

Link to comment 2 months ago -> http://www.opera.com/blogs/desktop/2014/09/browse-faster-opera-24-desktop-with-tab-preview/#comment-1570200266

So sad that theyre so silence about this things. It applies to the bookmark manager but also to print preview, task manager, search engines menu, etc…These are things that came to Opera EXACTLY the same as theyre were on Chrome (except a bit of the ui for the bookmarks manager) and they where features that presumably were developed and worked on by Opera.

• http://www.tbochenek.de thorbenb

Well, you are quoting me and I am happy to repeat what I said:

There are only so many ways to do visual bookmarks. All cars look quite similar, too. Note that maybe google stars was leaked before we presented our bookmarks manager, but what does that mean? Maybe we have less leaks? 😉

Opera worked on visual bookmarks in 2011 and there were internal builds with bookmarks that had images to describe them chosen by selecting them from the page in a popup.

About the other features you mentioned:
We are working with Google on chromium. Chromium includes certain things as print preview, task manager and settings. Why reinvent the wheel for all of them? It’s better for everybody if there are two teams working on that. We are improving all of these things, but you will see the ancestry for quite some time I guess.

• Lacedaemon

We are working with Google on chromium. Chromium includes certain things as print preview, task manager and settings. Why reinvent the wheel for all of them? It’s better for everybody if there are two teams working on that.

Because people will prefer the real thing, that has it always first, instead of a crippled substitute? Remember that you are at 1-2%, not Chrome, it’s you who need to wow users with new features and stuff and not reusing Chrome’s.

• Wolf-2

It seems it becomes a religious thing? “How dare you to work together with other people from another company.” I really get bored of this dogmatic song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WboggjN_G-4

• http://www.tbochenek.de thorbenb

Please reread what I said: We are developing *certain* UI features *together*. There is nothing “late to the party” or “crippled”. And have a look again at what kind of features we are talking about: Print preview, some settings and a task manager.

The vast majority of users will not even know that a task manager exists; A print preview is something you just expect from an application, but you don’t get extra points for making the best print preview an application has ever seen. You will only loose points for not having it.

IMHO it’s very clever to find cheaper ways to get such features and focus on stuff you really want to innovate at.

• Lacedaemon
• http://www.tbochenek.de thorbenb

Well, I don’t want to sound super defending, but if you look at our undesigned bookmark manager they look even more different. What is really the same? The fact that a bookmark has an image? A sidebar? Which of these are surprising if you want to build a “visual bookmarks” system?

Have you actually tried Google Stars or Google Bookmark Manager? Almost anything about the interaction is different from Opera Bookmarks. And there are rough edges basically everywhere you look.

How do you know that we haven’t been playing around with prototypes for much longer and have been as surprised as anybody else when we see an almost finished product of ideas we are playing with?

I said it before, but let me say it one more time before I leave the conversation: it doesn’t even matter if anybody copies something. There are only so many architectures and designs for most things that make sense. If you don’t take a closer look, most cars look roughly the same. In the end it matter which product you like best.

• http://www.tbochenek.de thorbenb

> *Share: Have a folder of favorite bookmarks? You can make it public and share the link with whomever you’d like to access it. Everything else will remain private.: Not in Opera

Andy you are posting that under a blog post that introduces Opera Share? 😉

• http://www.tbochenek.de thorbenb

> *Access your bookmarks anywhere: Chrome will continue to sync your bookmarks across all of your devices, just like it does today. Not in Opera

And you have seen that we introduced sync in our developer stream?!

• Lacedaemon

Google has already got a fully functional BKM out in Stable already. I compared stable vs. stable. You have all these features still in beta and developer versions, and in an unfinished state as well, with basic operations still missing. You are always behind Google even with features that supposedly were yours… which sadly, they weren’t.

• http://www.tbochenek.de thorbenb

You are bending the facts. Google has an extension they call “bookmark manager” that you can install, which replaces their normal bookmark manager. Download the latest Chrome, you will see the plain old bookmarks manager. That’s hardly what I call “out in Stable”.

IMHO in the end it doesn’t really matter who is out with what first. The quality of the final product matters. But to make that clear: Opera Share hit the developer channel long before Google introduced it in their Google Star / Google Bookmark Manager experiment.

• Lacedaemon

Yes but it was advertised all over the Internet as the new big thing from Google that everybody should try. So everybody will try it on their (stable) Chrome. Means they get the full experience earlier than you and there is no point for them trying yours, even if you don’t have to add it as an extension.

• http://www.tbochenek.de thorbenb

I doubt that the number of people trying it is actually significant. Even at Opera many people didn’t hear about Google releasing the Bookmark Manager extension

• Lacedaemon

But Opera is too busy ironing out bugs and coding 😛

I really, really miss tab stacking. Especially when I read posts about “Sharing your bookmarks”, I feel like the newer versions of Opera have been targeting a user base that’s different than in the past. It feels like you’re ignoring people that intensively use the browser for getting work done (with a massively configured, streamlined browser for optimizing workflow).

I’m sorry if this has been hashed out again and again, but I want to make sure that the Opera developers know this feature is greatly missed. I’m still running Opera 12 and I’m normally a person that loves running beta and even alpha releases.

Hello Opera team, I would like to suggest you to improve the functionality of the bookmark manager for emulate some of the functions of Dewey Bookmark plugin for Chrome, where we can add tags to the bookmarks.

Please you can check the source of the plugin here https://github.com/deweyapp/dewey-website/blob/master/README.md

Hope you can add some of the functions of that plugin, especially the tags.

Greetings from Mexico city!

• sgrandin

I hope feedback is being listened to, since along with a fully developed print module – you’re on the way now – the ability to modify at least the main toolbar, both in its contents and placement (bottom), are awfully important in my use of Opera. The list of closed tabs, with the icon placed lower right as in 12.17 – or the option to do so – would be very helpful.

• Bob Tarling

I’m having video playback issues with this version of Opera Beta, when videos are viewed full-screen, I get a clip that seems to jump a couple of times a second, instead of smooth video. When viewed at a smaller size, the playback is smooth.
Also, at some news sites, such as ksn.com, live streaming video, or video clips don’t load properly. There is an out of focus still image, but with sound playing. I’ve tried in Google Chrome, the clips play perfectly…

• https://christoph142.wordpress.com/ Christoph142

Yeap, that’s known.
If you want to, you can get rid of it by installing the newer PPAPI plugin over here: http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer.html

The change log, and the official announcement – “Sync Bookmarks between Your Phone and Your Computer”, “Sync open tabs between computers”, and “Now, when you right-click on a sidebar item, a context menu gives you the option to rename or delete top-level folders” 😉

I do wish that, when viewing Facebook, upper case ‘C’s would not look as though they’re an upper case ‘O’…

Just noticed the extension search results pages use such text as to be virtually unreadable.

http://www.cnet.com/how-to/find-your-windows-experience-index-scores-in-windows-8-1/ If I leave that in a tab open for a while over time (the page keeps reloading something) the Ram usage for just that tab is around 1.4GB and sometimes the tab CPU usage spikes to around 110%

New Opera beta: 26.0.1656.17, the change log 😉

Very promising features, but sadly neither syncing nor Importing does work for me.
Snycinc: There ist no CloudIcon button for OperaLink as described and the icon right to the adress field is the Bookmark icon. So how does syncing work now, it always takes me to the same old Login and Website saying there is no syncing since Opera14. both computers run opera 26.
Importing: Opera only offers me ie and chrome, no older operas. I transferred my settings with the Easy migration tool from win8 to a newer computer running good ol win7. Both were using the latest Opera. No Settings were imported, its not possible to select opera as a source in the import menu as there is no entry.
