Today’s release of Opera developer 25 includes some interesting changes for Mac. We’ve made the move to 64-bit and have also enabled H.264 video support. We would also like to ask for more feedback on our new Speed Dial, something many of you picked up on in our previous developer release.

As always, a complete list of changes can be found in the changelog.

Start page changes

We have recently begun experimenting with a fresh, new look for Speed Dial. Please try it out and let us know what you think.

The right time to switch Mac to 64-bit

We held off on switching Mac to 64-bit until the benefits outweighed the downsides. Today, we think we have reached that milestone. Some of the changes that allowed us to make the switch include:

  • New 64-bit only API possibilities, with the upcoming release of Yosemite
  • Speed and security improvements – find out more on the Chromium blog
  • H.264 video now enabled on Mac, to support the transition from plug-ins
  • No new bugs (we hope!) 🙂

Notes

  • H.264 video support is only available for Opera users on Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) and above (WebM video continues to work for all users)
  • Like Apple themselves, we no longer support Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)

If you do run an older version of Mac OS, remember that OS X 10.9 is a free upgrade for users currently on 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8.

Update: Sharing

If you have been waiting to try our new experimental bookmark sharing, now is your chance to do so. We have just made our sharing server live. If you want to try out bookmark sharing, enable the opera://flags/#bookmarks-sharing flag. Feel free to give us feedback below but remember this is still at very early stage. We will give you more information, in a later blog post.

  • L33t4opera

Hi Ruarí, thanks for the update 😉

  • Robert

    Thank you for the update.
But, sync is still not working.

“Connection to the synchronization server is temporarily unavailable. Will try again soon.”

    • Кostadin

Yep – with this and the previous build. Otherwise synchronization is broken since the beginning of 24. At least for me. It would be really good if this is fixed before the x64 bit for WIndows 😉

  • OperaKayo

There’s a nasty bug that sometimes every link on the page the cursor touches starts looking “highlighted” and doesn’t revert to normal until refreshing the page. Please fix that, and add right click + mouse wheel tab change!

    • NoName

Yea, this was also a bug in the earlier dev version.

      • Herr Pietrus

In 24 stable too, a least at one of the sites which I visit. 🙂

  • taneli

Well, crap, links’ on hover effects, and some elements are still rendered wrongly.

  • mkkrosky

On the technical side, 25 appears to be perfect. PDF-Reader, 64bit, h.264, mp3/ AAC support. But the new start page, though I know it’s probably not finished, isn’t what you should aim for.

Just take a look at the way Safari on Yosemite does what you want to achieve with the new start page. Entering Bookmarks-Manager leads to another kind of interface that a) Isn’t native OSX and even more important b) doesn’t have the UI elements the rest of the new start page has. Then the Coast-Like dials look way too big and there is no option to show the previews we’re used to.

It’s a confusing UI and adds unnecessary amounts of complexity. Safari does it way better as the sidebar shows all options and doesn’t disappear once you enter bookmarks.

I think regular speed dial and bookmarks should be more integrated, maybe show a folder „bookmarks“ on Speed Dial that opens a grid-view within Speed Dial or display bookmarks below the big Speed dial Thumbnails as a list. An option to exchange Discover with feedly or another RSS-Reader would round up the new start page perfectly.

  • Кostadin

Connection to synchronization server temporarily unavailable – this and previous build. Otherwise synchronization is broken since the beginning of 24. At least for me.

  • Herr Pietrus

I’ve already sad what I think about new SD page, I hope you that you noticed it 😉
Possibility to use thumbnails instead of text labels or special pictures provided by websites author is one of the most important things, as well as separating discover page in order to set different zoom levels for Discover and SD. (that will help everyone who say that SD tails are too big – yes, i think so too) 🙂

  • http://veuillezparlapresente.com/ Loutre Perfide

The new speed dial should use the same system than Bookmarks, on larger screens, the small icons doesn’t help to recognize properly the websites.

You should be able to choose between a favicon, a thumbnail or a random image found on the website along with the name of the website.

It is not Coast, which is great on smaller devices or even on the iPad, that you should aim for the new speed dial.

    • Lacedaemon

Yep, that’s the way to do it right.

    • LoverOfLife

I think would be nice to see, when right click a dial, have options like:
      – change Rss feed
      – change label
      – edit url
      – change icon
      – change background colour
      – change size

    • t0ken407

I agree full-heartedly, you’ve saved me from posting the exact same thing. Namely, how the small icons disrupt the ability to properly recognize websites, and the ability to choose between favicon/thumbnail/custom image.

    • Shacha GC

i think it should be aiming for coast like speed-dial with the bookmarks like that it would easier to sync to Opera for android i just wish the speed-dial would stay the same size as in build 23 and bring back the speed-dial extension

    • plague

I like the Coast-like SD, however I do wish it worked properly with more websites (picking an icon).
And I absolutely agree that having the option to choose between a Coast icon, preview thumbnail, random image, or just text on single colored background. Also I would like to be able to do basic editing of the random image, suce as select only a certain part of the image or crop the image or scale it, etc.

Other than that, I really like the Coast direction.
Remember, its a speed dial for frequently visited webpages, not a bookmark dumping ground.
Coast can look damn good and I much prefer that to the clutter of webpage previews, if done properly.

    • Radik Gradenko

My biggest complaint is lack of integration. You click on speed dial, it shows speed dial on the right. You click on discover, it shows random news on the right. You click on bookmarks, it clears the whole screen and opens the bookmark manager as a new page. That’s irritating to say the least.

  • David

New Speed Dial – sorry, i really don’t like it. I like the menu which has moved from the top to left hand side, but the big, bold, square icons are not for me. Not only do I object to the icon’s looks, but for about 50% of my speed dial, I no longer know what the icon represents.

    • Herr Pietrus

I’m afraid that automatic system of choosing pictures will never work fine with all websites. But they have quite good picture picker for bookmarks so I hope that they’ll implement it to SD. And as Loutre Perfide have said – Coast looks nice on smartphones, but not on big computer screens. And at least on android there are only special pictures or standard thumbnails cropped to shape of square…

      • plague

I like the Coast icons on SD, wherever they are high resolution enough. I completely agree that they should implement the picture picker from bookmarks though.
But the picker is a bit limited aswell, as it only makes a few pictures available and you can’t make any adjustments.

  • Gloriam

I asked this before but was never answered, the new speeddial forces to use of website logo’s or plain text, not showing the website itself like it did before.
I don’t like this at all and would like the option to use the old icon style with the new speeddial.
    Could you look into this?

    • al_ghul

well, you can chose it once when you click ‘heart it’, adding to speeddial, but yes, only once, then you cannot change it. i suppose you all above mean the lack of the last option;).

  • taneli

Are the speeddial tiles changed to random colors now? Before they were kinda the same color as the site/site’s logo, now they’re pretty much the opposite or whatever color that doesn’t even appear on the sites.
It was a lot handier to distinguish between tiles when they had the same color scheme as the sites.
Now, a completely blue and dark site with a 100% blue logo/fav icon gets a yellow color, why?

    • Herr Pietrus

The majority of my tiles changed heir colours to violet 😛

    • kokolo5

I’ve also noticed that, it was handier before because it was more logical.

  • Inquisitor

Confusing: a similar icon refers to different things on the new Speed Dial: button 1 links to Home Page (not necessarily the SD), and button 2 links to SD.
I’d like to see button 1 replaced by a Bookmarks button (with drop-dow menu). That way, one can access the bookmarks tree from any page, without going to the SD first.

    • Inquisitor

Actually, the O-menu is also confusing:

      • al_ghul

it will be better to have one two-part menu position – like in ff and other apps – e.g. menu position ‘bookmark’ with separated arrow on the left which pulls-down submenu.

      • Alex

I’m sorry, but why should it be replaced? I personally use it. Speed Dial is my home page and it serves its purpose. If I’m browsing a site and I want to open Speed Dial in the same tab, I will click that tiny and useful button. Or shall I close the tab and then open a new one to get to Speed Dial?
Now, if you’re actually talking about adding a Bookmarks button next to my beloved Speed Dial button, then I agree with you. It doesn’t take to much place, does it?

People discussed about the duplicate entries in the menu on the previous dev build as well. I doubt it will stay like this; they’re probably still organising the Opera Menu.

    • Vorpal

Button #1 is not necessary anyway. I would prefer to remove it completely. We already can open SD by open new tab ( + button).

      • NoName

That menu has been requested by several users in here. It’s better with keyboard and does need a new tab/screen.

      • Leonardo Gomes

That button is to open the start page on the same tab.

      • al_ghul

I agree somehow – my experience show that I use this icon really rare, using rather ‘+’ button. it’ll be better to have e.g. two-part button with heart and bookmarks menu, like in ff, than SD button.

        • http://www.youtube.com/user/max1cp?feature=mhum Maxim

I really like the idea of having two-part button. But I don’t think thats going to be implemented.

        • Alex

Yes, because two clicks are always better than one to open anything, right? It’s not even time consuming.

    • Leonardo Gomes

At least here this is the “start page” button.

    • Herr Pietrus

I think that picture on the “button1” should be simply replaced by the house icon since either sd page or any different page can serve as a homepage.
And bookmarks should get their own button on the right side of address field

      • Inquisitor

        I agree!

      • al_ghul

yes yes! I also feel the lack of that button:/. I think SD button is at least LESS necessary than home or e.g. bookmarks one.

    • life-fulfilled

Button 1 is necessary and useful for many people. It’s selfish to only think of yourself. What of people who want to use the button to go to speed dial in an already open tab? Why not ask for a bookmark button, so you have a choice, instead of expecting everyone to use Opera the same as you?

  • Mayhem

Show full page URL in bookmarks when hovering thumbnail just like in Speed Dial.
Use thumbnails in new Speed Dial.
Two Speed Dial icons on a new tab – after “refresh” button and on the left. A mess.

“Toggle list view” icon in bookmarks looks just like Speed Dial icon. Confusing.
Don’t hide 3 icons after choosing “Bookmarks”.

  • Herr Pietrus

I’ll say it once again – thumbnails are essential! – especially that we don’t have traditional sessions but only “save all tabs to SD folder” feature. It works quite well – of course if you don’t have to save tabs from a few windows – and it was nice addidtion to traditional sessions functionality that I could sometimes open only one of these saved websites even if I didn’t remember it’s address, because I had thumbnails. Now it’s impossible…

  • Lacedaemon

A bit off-topic but RSS seems to not be working for the whole http://www.opera.com domain?

    “XML parsing failed
XML parsing failed: syntax error (Line: 3, Character: 3)”

    • https://www.aeyoun.com/ Daniel Aleksandersen

      Thanks for notifying us.

      • Lacedaemon

No problem. I’ve seen it’s fixed already, nice.

  • derExperte

The new speed dial is wasting a ton of space on the left and right because the bookmark icons ‘wrap’ around even when there’s enough room for one more in the column. 12.17 was optimal in that regard, you could turn off automatic reshuffling and set the number of columns yourself. Also the size slider is missing.

    • Ralf Brinkmann

I am very happy, that the new speed dial page (start page) is not a must! I have still my old speed dials with 8 folders in a line and the page previews and I’m going to keep them as long as possible.

      • Lacedaemon

Yeah if it was a must I would have probably switched to another browser to be honest… I want a browser, not an exhibition gallery.

        • kokolo5

          Don’t create folder (;

      • ahoj1234

10 folders in a row here 😛 . Hard to change – you have to search in settings, not native at all.

But you actually can adjust how many SD folders will be in a row.
        W8.1, this build and working.

      • L33t4opera

        Hi Ralf, if you want, you can change the column count, and adjust height/width of the thumbnails for the items on the new start page, as follows: close the Opera, go to the Opera profile’s directory, open the Preferences file in you text editor, and edit it similar as below: "speeddial": {
        "big_thumbnails": false,
        "column_count": 8,
        "experimental_column_count": 8,
        "experimental_thumbnail_height": 45,
        "experimental_thumbnail_width": 70,
        "hide_search_box": true,
        "thumbnail_height": 45,
        "thumbnail_width": 70
        },
Adjust the values for the experimental: column count, thumbnail height, and width, accordingly to your needs. Save the changes, close the file, reopen the Opera, switch to the new start page.

        • latitude51uk

          1. Where do I find “the Opera profile’s directory”?
          2. It would be simpler if the user could, for example, right-click on the Speed Dial page where a menu would open offering a choice of the number of columns in which the Speed Dial items are displayed.

          • L33t4opera

Hi, you can check the path in O-Menu > About Opera > Paths > Profile.
You can change the “Maximum number of columns” (up to 9 within the UI) for the new start page – go to Settings (Alt+P), scroll down to the bottom of the page, and tick the checkbox on the left of “Show advanced settings”, then scroll up to the “Start page” section, and you should see the “Maximum number of columns” option.
On the other hand, you can adjust more parameters for the old start page within the Settings, but you need first enable the “Power user settings“, then untick the checkbox on the left of “Use big Speed Dial thumbnails” under the “Start Page” section, and then you can adjust “Speed Dial thumbnail width and height”.

  • Radik Gradenko

Good, now you can get back to the 64 bit Windows build ^^

    • adkiller

Fully support this. Chrome stable Win64 has been available for regular download for a long while now!

  • of

Slow repaint. Checkered background during scroll.

  • Lacedaemon

Win7-64bit. When snapping the browser to the sides and then snapping it to the top (to maximize) the grey folding of the SD page does not extend to the sides of the window.

    • Álvaro Martínez

Confirmed with Win+Up but not when dragging from side to top. I suppose this is because it restores the window when you drag it from the side.

      • Lacedaemon

You don’t even have to snap it. As long as the browser is in window mode and you maximize it it happens.

        • Álvaro Martínez

I can partially confirm this: It only happens when there was a scroll bar when Opera was in window mode.
The space width is the same as the scrollbar width.

I have resized Opera to make the scrollbar disappear before maximizing and the bug does not appear 🙂

          • Lacedaemon

And when you visit Discover and go back to the default Speed Dial it stays hanging like this…

        • Álvaro Martínez

Apparently, this happens when the restored window has a scrollbar. The empty space when maximized is the same width as the scrollbar that appears when speed dial elements overflow when restored 🙂

  • Inquisitor

O25 does not render this page correctly:

    http://www.wegenenverkeer.be/

In O25 the text is above the orange strip and hardly visible!
(comparison: Maxthon (top) and Opera 25 (bottom)

    • mikemanger

Looks fine to me on Windows 8.1

    • Vux777

I can’t see your SS, but this is on my win7 x64, latest O25
      http://prntscr.com/4jvbgv

edit: I can see it not

      • Inquisitor

I’m on Win7/64 as well. Yours looks all right, but here it does not. I changed the WinDPI, but to no avail. 🙁

    • Leonardo Gomes

The page seems ok here on Win8.1. It looks the same as the top image.

    • Lacedaemon

Road picture of the background shouldn’t move also…

      • Inquisitor

I reported that already. It’s being looked into.

  • Pim

Great to see the new Tab Menu! I think it can be really usefull when you have a lot of tabs opened. Don’t know if I will use it a lot but I think it’s a great addition.

    • Vux777

can you post ss of that menu?
on win there is nothing but little icon in upper right corner

      • Pim

Sure, here it is. It allows you to close tabs as well.

Small issue: there’s too much space is unused in the tab bar when there’s a lot of tabs opened. Sure that will be fixed though.

        • Inquisitor

Is this on Macs only? I don’t see it on my Windows7.

          • Pim

Don’t know. You have to activate it in opera://flags, but I don’t know if it’s mac only right now.

Tab preview also works from this menu.

@Vux777:disqus button does nothing so far, I also wonder what it is!

          • http://ruario.ghost.io/ Ruarí Ødegaard

It will appear on Windows later

        • Vux777

          thank you…
for now, seems that this is MAC only
that lower button, is that something related to battery life or some kind of switch?

          • escruting

I would hope the button is to change the tab menu mode between a fixed side panel to the right of the browser and the floating tab menu we see on the screenshot. The button artwork seems to imply something like this…

          • plague

At first, I thought it might have been an on/off switch. 😛
But it does look like it could be vertical tabs.

          • http://ruario.ghost.io/ Ruarí Ødegaard

It will appear on Windows at a later stage. We have not officially announced it yet. Hence why the flag is off

        • https://www.aeyoun.com/ Daniel Aleksandersen

This is Mac only for the moment. Expect it to be the main news once Windows and Linux have cough up.

PS: It works with Tab Preview!

        • Cjcr

I really don’t see the point of this …. how this will be useful??

I think if you put there the recently closed tabs it would be much more useful than this!! guys, wake up!!

          • escruting

Yeah, and this is a bit redundant with the tab previews “find your tabs faster”.

They said the didnt want to clutter the UI with unnecessary things like in Opera12 but they dont seem to have a clear direction with anything…

          • http://ruario.ghost.io/ Ruarí Ødegaard

Actually this can be used in conjunction with tab previews and is keyboard accessible.

          • Cjcr

To be honest, it is very redundant feature.
Only should be useful if you have at least 20 tabs in a full hd screen 24”. And your stats says (you Opera said it months ago) that average tabs is about 3-5 (or something like that, I don’t remember well) … so, conclusion: I don’t understand this movement because no one will use it (according to your stats)

          • escruting

Yeah, and then little things like pinned tabs not staying pinned, closed tabs button, double click on a tab to close it and browser exit confirmation dialog keep being forgottten, very useful things and with less developing time needed than tab previews and new start page.

          • http://ruario.ghost.io/ Ruarí Ødegaard

Part of the reason for not using more tabs could also be that they get unwieldy to work with. If we make it easier for people they may use more tabs. Hence our large tab previews and now this latest experiment.

          • Cjcr

To be honest, it is very redundant feature.

            Totally agree!!!
Well, it could be useful if we didn’t have tabs previews…

And we still cannot get such a simple thing as bookmarks tree launched via toolbar button. (YES, i know about extensions, I use Neater Bookmarks)

          • Rob Segal

Maybe this is mac only but I do have bookmark tree via toolbar

          • Leonardo Gomes

It can be very useful when you have lots of tabs opened. It reminds me of the old extender button of Opera Presto.

Regarding the closed tabs button, i have nothing against but i’m really not sure if it would be helpful as reopening closed tabs is not something people use to do all the time.

          • Lacedaemon

It’s probably a measure attempt for the lack of vertical tabs and sidebar that will never return.

          • https://christoph142.wordpress.com/ Christoph142

Well, think about what you guys were asking for the whole time and then have another look at the icon at the bottom of that dialog… Can you come up with something useful then? 😉

          • ruaman

Tab stacking! Or how about Right Click+ Scroll (tab preview) 😉

        • iwod

This is a GOD Send!!!! To those who say it is useless, do you ever have more then 15 / 20 Tabs opened?

        • duhduhduh0

Plus a little small search box at the bottom to help search for your tabs would be even better!

      • https://www.aeyoun.com/ Daniel Aleksandersen

This is Mac only for the moment. Expect it to be the main news once Windows and Linux have caught up.

P.S.: It works with Tab Preview!
        P.P.S.: Mysterious bottom-button is mysterious.

        • Vux777

I’m guessing mysterious button is switch to some-kind-of-visual-tabs-list-previews-all-in-one??
I’m working on something with similar tabs list…but not on the tabs bar

P.S. btw, I’m trying to quit…so, no cigar jokes pls 😛

    • taneli

      …nudes.

    • Adam Minchinton
    • Inquisitor

Sharing bookmarks may be a cool idea, but it’s such a hassle to get to my bookmarks in the first place!

      • Lacedaemon

        Exactly.

        • escruting

Yeah, it seems the bookmarks manager will go to the Next/Beta stream without changing anything from the initial implementation (just bug fixing).

Such a shame. With all the little improvements and feedback the users provided to the BManager and new start page it seems nothing will change for now.

    • kokolo5

Why you don’t use it as your mascot – https://share.opera.com/2606026ed9264cd0ba15590315e6e34f – for example when sites are broken or you introduce something new like the new start page to draw attention to the people, there could be an animation with it. That would be very sympathetic and humorous – people like that (:

Like the idea of the sharing feature (:

    • Nekomajin43

I like it! It’s a cool, oldschool Opera innovation. But how about manually setting the expiration date?

    • IllusionMH

Interesting feature, but I hope that this is only first step to proper bookmarks sync for my Opera installation on different pc))

I am still waiting for setting sharing 😛 Since bookmarks sharing is here hope it will not take a long time.

use? adjust browser setting for friends without needing compilation USB install. Just a small change of settings, hit “share” and sent it to the friend to let him/her explore how cool Opera can potentially be.

    • rufu2

It’s a bit “meh” for me. I don’t see myself using it, since I don’t need it. I don’t want to “share” links “in the cloud”. I might want to email someone a list of links, but not upload the links to a server first.
But it’s probably cool for some people. People use pinterest and other link-collectors, so that’s fine with me.

What I would need at least once is an import of bookmarks from a html file.
Could you please add an option to export to / import from a local html file?

    • rufu2

      Bookmark-Sharing Bug?
I selected a bookmark and shared it. Everything OK.
Then I deleted the entry in the “Shared by me” folder. Still OK.
Then I shared another bookmark, but the link that is created returns a “Page not found” page.

  • SQL

Ruari, it’s pretty funny that you’re the one who made this post :p (You said a few weeks ago that 64 bit isn’t coming yet :p)

    • http://ruario.ghost.io/ Ruarí Ødegaard

Things change! 😉 For example, we have Yosemite APIs we would like to make use of.

      • Pim

I’m glad you’ve made the change. It’s only a first impression, but the 64 bit version runs (and boots) a lot faster.

        • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

I have also noticed that it too, it responds much faster,

Tho some plug ins are not loading (like Silverlight)

  • Hookah1388 .

Just add back #warn-about-insecure-content — already. It does more good than harm. What could possibly be wrong with it? It’s more a nuisance that Opera decides to block everything without me being able to change it permanently.

  • Maciej Bałuta

Some notes on new Speed Dial:
    1. I think it’s better, at least more themes fit nicely
    2. Why can’t I get rid of “+” button. It highly annoying especially if I would like to have 12 Speed Dial, which is an optimal amount for me. Now with “+” button there are 13 squares, so I cannot set columns to make perfect grid.
    3. I would like to get rid of search bar too – I don’t use it too and it simply clutters my Speed Dial
    4. With landscape themes (like this: https://addons.opera.com/en/themes/details/sea-6/) “Speed Dial”, “Discover” and “Bookmarks” button would be better in landscape – I would like to configure that
    5. In fact I would like to get rid of those buttons at all, as I simply don’t use them, and they clutter the view as well
    6. Speed Dial extensions don’t work, but I guess you are aware of that
    7. With some themes (for example default Lofoten Islands by Victor Velez) Speed Dials in center doesn’t look good. It would be nice if I could arrange them like icons on desktop. There’s another benefit for that: I can put social sites on the left, news on the right and this way I don’t have to use folders:)

    • Inquisitor

It’s obvious that this new SD was designed especially for tablets and small devices with touch screens. It’s cumbersome and awkward to use with mouse and keyboard on a ‘traditional’ desktop (although it’s called ‘Opera for Desktops’, it’s not, really). I’m not sure if the ‘One Size Fits All – browser’ approach is the right way forward.

    • Inquisitor

You can remove the Google search bar:

      Go to:
      opera://settings/

(if it’s not visible, use the konami code)

      • Maciej Bałuta

If I want to remove something then I right-click on it and select Remove (unless there is a Remove button).

        • https://christoph142.wordpress.com/ Christoph142

Well, you can keep doing this and keep failing OR you follow Inquisitor’s instructions 😛

          • Rafael Luik

            LOL omg

    • Alex

+1 for 7. Grouping the speed dial entries in a way (other than folders) would be perfect.

  • taneli

Open a youtube video page -> click the video window to make the flash object focused -> close that player tab -> focus won’t be returned to the newly activated page (can’t use keyboard or mouse untill you click the page)

PDF viewer seems to be broken on OS X.

    • http://ruario.ghost.io/ Ruarí Ødegaard

It works for me here. What version of MacOS X do you run

  • kapsi

Moving the dialog around is broken on Ubuntu. I’m guessing it’s because of the beta chromium.

    http://jqueryui.com/dialog/

    • L33t4opera

Hi Kapsi, every time I see your avatar picture, I can not stop laughing so positively 😉 It looks like, you know, so pretty funny 🙂 No offense, of course!

      • kapsi

        🙂

    • Vux777

      confirmed
but in latest Canary and Dev works fine

    • taneli

Also not working on win8.1 x64.

  • kokolo5

I like the new start page, looks cool and i like the icons, it’s better to identify the websites now for me. But the folder need names and subpages should be distinguishable.

I hope you adapt the new fresh look and feeling also to the o menu (: Now it looks and feels outdated.

  • http://www.facebook.com/hector.maciasayala Hector Macias Ayala

Fingers crossed for a Windows 64 bit build, could solve performance issues of late.

  • Rob Segal

I really like the look of the new start screen for the most part. I see others have said that the speed dial items are too small and i agree. I also second the request for an option to have page previews instead of the new icons because I’m having a hard time distinguishing between thumbnails and some sites don’t generate any image at all.

One other small change that I think is a change for the worse is that now you only see the names of the speed dials groups when you hover over them. I hope that gets changed back.

With the combination of these three things, I’m pretty much lost when I’m looking at speed dial now.

Thanks for the many improvements though and keep at it!

    • Herr Pietrus

for those who use resolutions below FullHD SD items can be too small. For example for me they are. I’m forced to use 75-90% zoom level on SD page. And that’s the problem because discover items are too small then.

  • iwod

The day you offer something so i can use it with more then 30 – 50 Tabs i am going to switch to Opera.

Please consider Tab Overflow as an Option. ( At least in Advance Option or a flag or something. )

    • http://ruario.ghost.io/ Ruarí Ødegaard

If you have a mac try enabling opera://flags/#tab-menu. It will appear on Linux and Windows at a later stage.

      • iwod

Wow Tab Menu! Sorry i am on Windows ><
Do the Tab Still Shrink to unclickable size? Or Does it overflow like Safari and Firefox?

        • Herr Pietrus

          I hope that they don’t overflow…

          • iwod

Why ? Just generally curious. So you have the near unclickable tabs as a reminder you have too many tabs opened?

          • reesmichael1

Overflowing tabs aren’t necessarily a huge problem for me, but whenever I’m in an application that uses them, I find myself waiting for the right tab to appear as I search to the left or right–and that’s assuming I know which direction to go. If there is no overflow, I can typically guess the right region in the tab bar and get there immediately. (Tab previews help with this.) It just seems easier to me to find a certain tab among many without overflow than with it. Like I said, though, it certainly wouldn’t be a deal breaker if tab overflow were to appear in Opera–it’s just personal preference 🙂

          • Rafael Luik

Exactly, everything you said, it’s much easier cognitively for me to locate my tabs when they keep their position and just shrink. I agree with you except that a mandatory scrollable tab bar or overflow would be a deal breaker for me.

          • http://ruario.ghost.io/ Ruarí Ødegaard

No you get the full list.

  • Herr Pietrus

Oh, one more remark about new SD… That almost black background around opened SD folder is terrible! Please, leave the SD page visible around opened folder.

    • kokolo5

What, i really like that transparent black. When the space around opened folder would be visible it would look chaotic and crammed.

      • Herr Pietrus

Damn, i thought about the area of the SD page around that square where pages stored in folder are displayed but I see that in this version SD page is covered by semi-transparent white so it turns out that I didn’t noticed that they already fixed that full black background 🙂

        • https://christoph142.wordpress.com/ Christoph142

Yeah, looks way better now 🙂

  • pisarz1958

Any chance for 64-bit version of Opera for Windows?

    • Wando Schneider

AFAIK, we need wait a little bit more 🙂

Another ones ppl couldnt care more, PLEASE, bring Opera 12.18 for Win-Unix-Mac with EVERYTHING updated inside it, support for web standards, the most recent extensions, etc, etc, etc.

    • https://christoph142.wordpress.com/ Christoph142

Yeah, right… That’s gonna happen… by tomorrow or is it fine by Monday? O:)

  • oic

regarding the speed dial, it lack consistency. When I click speed dial/discover icon on the left, it loads up speed dial/discover on the right, but when I click the bookmark, it opens a totally new windows, instead of loading the bookmark on the right

  • Nekomajin43

Will you integrate the bookmark thumbnail choices to the speed dial?

    • Leonardo Gomes

This would be interesting. (I was sure that i have replied before)

      • Nekomajin43

I can’t see why it can’t be done. Suddenly, everyone would be happy.

Bookmark sharing doesn’t work if you share with Firefox users. Gives a blank page.

    • http://referenceerror.com Michał Łowicki

Which version of the Firefox and which operating system are you using?

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/max1cp?feature=mhum Maxim

It wouldn’t work on both Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 SP1 both 64 bits. Firefox was the latest version, whatever it is.

  • Kiyoko Kisaragi

(not sure if that’s already mentioned.) I got some questions about the displaying size when I was testing my own website. I noticed this since opera goes to v24 stable. for some webpages (including gmail), the actually displayed size are much bigger compared to opera 12.16. there’s no page scaling applied for both the new opera and 12.16. is it a bug or we can do something in the css to fix this?

    • https://christoph142.wordpress.com/ Christoph142

You’ve set Windows to 125% dpi.
Set it to 100% and it’s gonna show up exactly as big as it used to do up to version 23 which doesn’t support this kind of UI-scaling.

  • Der Herr Nick

There are still some really ugly rendering issues with e.g. Twitter background images. Win7/32

    speed dial feedback:

    – SD extension ( https://addons.opera.com/cs/extensions/details/gismeteo-weather-forecast-in-speed-dial/?display=en ) is not showing in the new SD (and yes, works in the old one)

    – speed dial behave like a page -> zooming is strange. Images get blurred when zoomed in and left panel is also bigger (not only SD columns)

    – SD theme has been reset with this build.

    – SD names should be visible all the time! (as when hovered – but reversed behave -> show when searching, hide when getting active)

    – the “delete” button is just barely visible. (I prefer the colour of hovering on the “delete” – darker one – as default)

    – going to bookmarks – can’t go back with the same way?? (in bookmarks in place between “bookmarks” text and “unsorted bookmarks” it would be nice to see “Speed dial” and “Discovery”).

    – a huge recycle bin on top/right side would be nice (to appear when dragging)

    – one more time: better possibilities of zooming the SD (followed with right click to set number of columns)

hope that at least half of this will be changed/implemented in the NEAR future 😛

    • al_ghul

YES i’d like also to get back from speed dial:)

    • Herr Pietrus

SD names should be visible all the time!

      YES!

better possibilities of zooming the SD

Zooming in and out 🙂 – YES, YES, YES…

  • Vorpal

I made another sketch of my vision of improvement of UI. Don’t you think the bottom version is cleaner?

    1. Instead of making buttons everywhere (allude to the new button at the top) better make all “system” buttons in one place.

    2. Place to drag and hide buttons of rare used extensions like it does in windows tray. So they take up less space and fast available when needed.

    • taneli

Looks like a pretty good idea, i’d also like to be able to have the download button showing all the time (even if the download list was empty).

      • Herr Pietrus

I.m not sure if tabs button should be placed on the toolbar, but an optional permanent visibility of download button sounds ok.

    • al_ghul

YES I agree – to move ext buttons and to hide/organize several of them in one icon would be quite smart:)

  • Bjørnar Berg

I can’t launch this version on Fedora 20. Ends with a memory segment fault for me.

    • http://ruario.ghost.io/ Ruarí Ødegaard

What method did you use to install Opera on Fedora?

      • Bjørnar Berg

I used a tiny bit updated version of your opera-standalone script from GitHub. It has worked until this newest version, with just a minor change in your script, the change was to accomodate for the new name of the executable.

        • http://ruario.ghost.io/ Ruarí Ødegaard

Are you creating a symlink for libcrypto? If not, in the directory where the udev symlink is housed, make a symlink called libcrypto.so.1.0.0 and point it at libcrypto.so.10 on your system.

          • Bjørnar Berg

I havent done that, but I do have both /usr/lib64/libcrypto.so.10
            and /usr/lib64/libcrypto.so.1.0.0

          • http://ruario.ghost.io/ Ruarí Ødegaard

Ok, thanks. I’ll try to get someone to look. I have an Fedora 20 user in the office near me. He has not noticed the issue.

Do you have any other machines, where you also see this.

P.S. Thanks for the comment about naming of the binary and my script. I have now fixed it.

        • http://ruario.ghost.io/ Ruarí Ødegaard

Also what do you mean when you say, the “new name of the executable”?

          • Bjørnar Berg

            This line in your script:
            printf ‘#!/bin/shnexec “${0%%/*}/’`find usr/lib* -name opera -executable -type f -print`'” –user-data-dir=”${0%%/*}/profile” “$@”n’ > run

A few versions ago, it stopped creating a working “run” file. The name have changed from opera to opera-developer, apparently.
For me this is (last working version) now:
            exec “${0%/*}/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/opera-developer/opera-developer”

This is what I called the executable. Sorry if unprecise.

          • http://ruario.ghost.io/ Ruarí Ødegaard

Your terminology seems fine! I would have said the same thing. I hadn’t considered this and did not notice as I have not been using this script myself lately. Anyway, I have fixed the original source script on github. Thanks for the heads up.

Somewhere along the line, while configuring, I am suddenly no longer able to launch with a maximized screen. Can someone point out the error of my ways?

    • Inquisitor

Same here since the latest update.

    • http://weaselzippers.us/ CaryF

I reset the flags section and it’s fine now.

      • https://www.aeyoun.com/ Daniel Aleksandersen

Do let us know if you figure out what flag caused the problem. 🙂

        • http://weaselzippers.us/ CaryF

I most certainly will. Thanks for fixing the flashing black bar on launch. It really stuck in my craw for some reason.

        • http://weaselzippers.us/ CaryF

Oddly enough, it started doing it again, but I’ve not changed any flags since I reset them earlier. A flag reset did not fix the issue this time.

  • mina saher

I like the new speed dial i guess it will be better if sync, with opera android with the same look.

  • Vorpal

Long time I want to say about it. Guys, seems it’s some problems with addons.opera.com. I can’t publish my extension because of server side “Error 500” at the moment of publishing.

  • taneli

Again, i need to restart Opera after i watch a youtube video and change the window.
Now i don’t have to do anything else, just play a youtube video, close the tab, change the window, and Opera won’t come to front anymore, nothing else, just watch the video and close the tab and after that i’m fucked and need to restart the browser.

Edit: Also worth mentioning, this only happens IF i close the tab when the video is stopped (watched to the end) or paused.

    • NoName

I have had the “Not being able to focus Opera” bug several times before.

But I can’t confirm this. I tried with both the HTML5 and Flash (PPAPI) player.

      Also Win 8.1 x64

      • taneli

Ah, i’m on NPAPI still since PPAPI gave me some headaches in some cases, let me go test this same thing with PPAPI ->

        • NoName

I just uninstalled the PPAPI and is now running NPAPI.
          Still can’t confirm 🙁

          • taneli

Well, dammit… also disabled all extensions so they won’t interfere, and reset most of the settings…
This bloody bug is hard to pinpoint.

          • NoName

Do the PPAPI version work for you?

          • taneli

I forgot the switch to get PPAPI working, since Opera apparently still won’t autoload it when it’s in the right place. (find-PPAPI flag is enabled)

          • NoName

I just install the PPAPI version from the link of the blogpost Opera made. I don’t worry about the location or anything else.

            Link: http://labsdownload.adobe.com/pub/labs/flashruntimes/flashplayer/flashplayer15_debug_win_ppapi.exe

          • taneli

Thanks, i had them pepper-files where they used to work but alas, didn’t auto-detect.
Installed PPAPI with your link and now the problem seems to be gone, so NPAPI seems to be a part of the problem (if you couldn’t reproduce it with NPAPI, then, just a part of the problem ;p)

          • NoName

At least we got an idea of where the problem could be now! 🙂
            Thanks for testing it out.

          • taneli

            To summarize:
On NPAPI Flash 14, paused or stopped FLASH video in a tab, and upon closing that tab would set Opera in “limbo”, and couldn’t be focused again here.
This same behaviour didn’t appear with PPAPI Flash 15.

  • ahoj1234

    feedback/idea on topic: Tab menu

    – what about to place there “Recently closed tabs” too?

It sounds good to me. For example, I am searching for a tab… Then I may realise that the tab has been closed and on the bottom of tab menu I would like to find “Recently closed tabs” and roll menu for it..
Or in additional still better to have it there too than (only) in Opera menu if the first reason is not enough.

    • Herr Pietrus

I/m afraid it will be hard to combine many opened and recently closed tabs together on one list especially that as I can see, there will be ALL opened tabs there. But perhaps they coud place there last 3-4 recently closed tabs with arrow to open rest of the list…
And as someone mentioned – that button should be placed on the right side of the toolbar near extensions buttons.

      • ahoj1234

well, I tried to highlight that in the tab menu could be another “layer”/”roller”… just other level -> after hover on some text like “Recently closed tabs”. Not sure how to express it in my own language not even in english 😀

        • Vorpal

Maybe just make two different buttons for this?

          • ahoj1234

heh 😀 it’s requesting since very fist blink-based build. So I don’t think they will do that. I just suggest this as “better than nothing”.
Of course that it would be better to have different button in that area needing only 1 click to show like “old but gold” recycle bin (before update to ugly arrow).

          • Herr Pietrus

heh 😀 it’s requesting since very fist blink-based build. So I don’t think they will do that. I just suggest this as “better than nothing”.

            I thought the same. 🙂

But I think also that displaying recently closed after additional cursor movement and hovering over text will make all the idea pointless, because it will take the same time as opening O-menu. Only direct access make sense because is faster.

          • ahoj1234

in O menu it’s like “what? it’s there?!” – it’s not native at all. I remember how everyone was saying “closed tab feature is missing, good O12” but it was just in the O menu… Even my dad was asking me (when I upgrade his Opera to blink based) where he can find it and comment it “weird”.

but finding it there (Tab manager) seems more native to me. And as I mentioned – sometimes it can help with searching for a tab (which may be closed already).

Nevertheless, we will see. It’s clearly not up to us.

    • L33t4opera

Hi, if you want, then for that purpose, you can install the Classic Context Menus extension. It’s not perfect solution, cuz it doesn’t show recently closed internal pages, eg. opera:about, but it includes a list of all other, recently closed tabs, as it’s shown below:

    • Cjcr

What about right click to show the recently closed tabs and left click, shows the tab-menu? This should make happy to all of us.

      • ahoj1234

well, we agree that we disagree 🙂 more people know more. I can say that it’s not bad but hard to find by “normal” users who do not read this blog. If done well it could be best solution mentioned here.

So maybe with some notification after you click left -> like “Do you know that right mouse click will show recently closed tabs?” (show it like pop-up with “do not show it again” option).

  • taneli

I’m not even sure what this is related to, but i got used to .GIF’s starting from the beginning when i go to a page with other browsers.
Now while browsing imgur here and i see a GIF, it plays out, half-way through, i go to the next pic, and if i then press “back to previous page”, it seems like the .gif has been playing there all along and i see the ending when entering the page (missing a gap for when i was on the next page).
Could we get .gif’s and what ever else is affected to start from the beginning when entering the page?

  • mozzer

    Still no tab stacking…

  • Fhury

I changed the location of my download folder to another drive, but every time I start Opera 25 it creates a download folder in the old place…

    • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

Check the preferences and see where it is set for downloads

      • Fhury

the preferences reflect my change, so that is regretably no solution

  • Vux777

Opera is one of the rare browser developing companies…
why cant you have your own commenting system like before?
it doesn’t need cool features etc… threaded tree maybe

disqus started to inject that side bar/page now, when clicking on notification
they changing things now on monthly basis… it sucks
    annoying, slowing, confusing (disqus dashboard)

    • Fhury

The old commenting system was awful. Disgus might have cons, but it is much better than the old.

      • Vux777

only reply was missing in old one…
fast, simple, with notifications on start page…

        • Fhury

I understand you personal preference, but we should let them focus on the browser 🙂

          • Vux777

            NO!
..no rest for the wicked 😛

    • taneli

There are tons of problems with this disqus thing.
I’d much rather see this like a forum system, where you can see stuff chronologically.

Since most of the time disqus won’t even tell me that there are new comments, i need to be scrolling through hundreds of comments to see if a wild small blue square has emerged with “1 more comment” next to it.

And if i happen to close the browser, which i have to do every 15 minutes with Opera, they won’t be marked as new anyways, so i need to read all the comments over and over again to see which ones are new.

      • Vux777

enable email notifications for new comments…that way you don’t need to “keep track” on comments
but clicking from mail (or any other way) won’t show ALL thread comments, just to particular one, which is completely stupid
couple of ppl answering same post, not aware of each other…dumb system

        • taneli

I really wouldn’t like my email get filled with all that :/
(again here scrolling back and forth looking for new comments since this thingie won’t tell me that there are new ones, and there were, several new ones)

    • taneli

Any other tips than “email notifications” on how to read new comments here?
I’m scrolling back and forth through the whole thing and i just find those “1 new comment” links here and there sometimes, Disqus won’t tell me about them.
And if it does, it just says “One more comment above” (when i’m watching the top most comment and clicking it just takes me to the top, where the comment is not”
And, yeah, when i have to close the browser every 15 minutes, all the notifications will be gone.

How do you people handle this?

      • Lacedaemon

Well you can use RSS on every blog post individually and set it updating itself regularly to see new comments, but disgust is such a shitty platform that screws the comment #numbering on purpose, so that linking from it is not working…

        • taneli

I wouldn’t really care to go through all that trouble for every invidual blog, this is just silly.

          • Lacedaemon

Yeah it is a suggestion 🙂 You may consider also that people tend to move to the newest one every time, so you ‘d only do it every now and then…
But if Opera does not ditch this shitty platform and use their forums as the announcement place and participate there instead, we will continue torturing ourselves as it seems :S

      • Vux777

        – “Any other tips than “email notifications” on how to read new comments here?”
no, sry…only by email you can follow disqus new comments not related to you (and not trying to catch them scrolling up and down)

        • Lacedaemon

Heh, receiving hundreds of mails (219 as of right now) can be quite frustrating though, shows the severe flaw of the system Opera has chosen for torturing us…

Could someone please, please, explain to me how I can add a bookmark to a subfolder in ‘Bookmarks’? It’s easy enough to add a bookmark to a folder in ‘My Folders’ (click heart icon in address bar), but IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO ADD A BOOKMARK TO A SUBFOLDER IN ANY OF ‘MY FOLDERS’. When I try to drag a bookmark onto a subfolder, the folders just move out of the way and won’t accept the bookmark. (shouting intentional. Sorry for that, but I’m getting really frustrated!)
    Thanks.

when will you switch windows to x64?

  • http://blog.homisite.com/ HomiSite

I don’t really like the new Speed Dial: It doesn’t show website names and I want to choose the layout of my Sped Dial. BTW: Why is there no quick context menu to change the old Speed Dial options?!

As others already said: It makes no sense that after clicking on th left “Bookmarks” tab, the whole sidebar disappears!

Bookmarks in general: Bring back the power of Opera 12! At least you can now search in Speed Dial entries via the address bar, but more important is to search your bookmarks this way! Keywords, Descriptions – all gone. But Bookmark sharing?! Does old syncing works again yet…?

If you add a bookmark, it should be possible to change the name directly in the heart menu.

PS as always: Site Preferences, please! And AutoFill/forms like in O12! And Zoom Slider! And Fit to Width! And Image Properties! And and and…

PPS: Is there a keyboard hotkey to bring the focus back to the address bar?

    • cgebhard

      Ctrl-L should do the job

      • http://blog.homisite.com/ HomiSite

Thanks. I overlooked it in the Opera help section. Still like the one-button hotkeys of O12 more 🙂

        • Rafael Luik

You can also use the F8 key.

          • al_ghul

well, how simple those keywords are;). shouldn’t be the same with some really basic things in web browser – like. in Old Opera Presto that was e.g. F4 for side/bookmarks bar or ctrl+anykey for others? ctrl+shift+B it’s a little complicated IMHO.

          • Rafael Luik

?? -> F8 was Presto’s default key for address field.

          • al_ghul

i know I meant the other ones:) e.g. for bookmarks;)

          • L33t4opera

            If you want, you can rebind it as follows: close the Opera, go to the Opera’s profile folder (you can find the path in O-Menu>About Opera>Paths>Profile), open the “Preferences” file in your text editor, and edit the first 9 lines, as below:{
            "Keybindings": {
            "Basic": {
            "BookmarkManager": [ "F4" ]
            },
            "Settings": {
            "AdvancedEnabled": true
            }
            },
(the value of the “AdvancedEnable” can be “false”, if you don’t use adv. keybindings). Save the changes, close the file, relaunch the Opera.

          • al_ghul

ok, thank You for that advise I’ll try this solution. but I meant rather default keys for that actions which work at start. if there will be some key-binding settings e.g. in settings page in future? it will be more useful than change it manually.

    • L33t4opera

Hi, you can already search for the bookmarks, by typing part of its name, or url, from the search bar on the BM page (Ctrl+Shift+B), press “Ctrl+F”, then type: part of the name, or the url of the bookmark(s). Regardless of that, you can install the “Bookmarks Tagger“, which allows to assign tags to your bookmarks, and search for them through the address bar – for details, please have a look here 😉

You can install the “Site-specific Preferences” extension, which brings back some of the Opera 12’s features for changing per-site settings, you can also try the “Classic Images” extension, which brings back some of the image handling features.

To select the address bar, press: “Ctrl+L”, “Alt+D”, “Ctrl+E”, or “F8”, on Windows, or “Command+L”, “Command+E”, or “Ctrl+F5”, on Mac.

      • http://blog.homisite.com/ HomiSite

Thanks for your infos, but I don’t want to try dozens of extensions for IMO basic functionality. I use Classic Images – but this has to be implemented! The site-“specific” preferences at the moment are a bad joke and hardly practical (I’ll try your mentioned extension).

And Opera is always talking about the easy use of their browser (in their eyes), but having no real bookmarks for many months and now this half-baked bookmark thing… Nothing is more easy and a must-have feature than searching your bookmarks from within the address bar. I hope that feature will come back…

If I inserted “about:blank” adress in opera://settings/startup, display Speed Dial when every new tab opening.

How do I disabled completely Speed Dial page opening?

    • Leonardo Gomes

      I don’t think it’s possible atm.

    • L33t4opera

Hi, you can install the “Custom New Tab Page” extension.
      If you want to set “about:blank” as the url to be opened, when a new tab is created, you can slightly modify the “background.js” file, as follows:if(e.newtabpage){
      - if(e.newtabpage.indexOf('://')==-1){
      + if(e.newtabpage.indexOf('about:blank')!=-1){
      + e.newtabpage = 'about:blank';
      + } else if(e.newtabpage.indexOf('://')==-1){

and click the "Reload" button, on the "Extensions" page (Ctrl+Shift+E). If you find it useful, you can also copy modified code of the "background.js" file, from here ;-)

      • pureocean

Woow! It’s worked. Thank you very much for all tips.

There is a disadvantage of this extension: its disabled focusing the address field when new tab opening.

Nevertheless I will use it until Opera developers’ adding “Speed Dial -> enabled/disabled” experiment feature to opera://flags .

        • L33t4opera

In that case, close the Opera, and open the “background.js” file in your text editor, then go to line 11, and replace “create” with “update”, as below:chrome.tabs.update({url:e.newtabpage});and then remove line 15: chrome.tabs.remove(tab.id);Save the changes, close the file, relaunch the Opera.

      • al_ghul

and when one want to have start page at new tab, shouldn’t he paste instead of ‘about:blank’ a desired page url?

        • L33t4opera

Hi, of course, in that case you can just install this extension, and use it without any modification 😉

          • al_ghul

            ok, thx:)

      • al_ghul

        txh:)

    🙁

    • Marko Koivuniemi

I noticed this thing but didn’t noticed when I use this same laptop in my work with docking station and two monitors.

    • ayespy

This is not a bug, but a “feature” – a conscious decision by Opera developers to penalize you for using the “wrong” DPI setting on your desktop. Unlike most other software, which focuses on a consistent user experience with all DPI settings, Opera has decided to make its UI re-scale according to your DPI setting. Hence, when you use the “medium” setting for Windows on, say, a 24-inch 1920×1080 display (one of the most common in use), of 125%, Opera will show its UI at 125%, also. And you CAN’T SHRINK THAT.

The only solution is to resize your desktop to 100% and then find all of the hidden and obscure windows settings to resize text, toolbars, icons, etc., to what is comfortable for your vision. That’s what I did.

      • Dave-H

Unfortunately a lot of those settings are not actually available on Windows XP, which is what I’m using. If Opera had officially dropped support for XP I guess I’d just have to put up with it, but they haven’t, so I’m not going to!
I refuse to mess up the look of every other program on my computer just to get Opera to display correctly, and frankly, why should I have to!
Firefox had the same problem, but there is a “flag” setting called “layout.css.devPixelsPerPx” which can be changed to correct it.
An equivalent setting in Opera flags would be much appreciated please!
        🙂

        • ayespy

Actually, yes. Every single setting I mentioned is available on XP and easier to find than on the platform I use, which is Win 8.1.

          • Dave-H

Sorry, I’m sure you’re right, but in the past I’ve always ended up using the “large” 120 DPI setting on the Windows XP display properties as otherwise on my 1920×1080 display things like dialogue boxes are minute. I experimented for ages with all the settings, and just couldn’t get things looking the way I wanted without that setting, which it what I assume is now causing the problem.
It doesn’t happen on any other browser, including Google Chrome, or Firefox with the setting I mentioned applied, so I really don’t see why it should be an issue with Opera!
            🙂

          • Herr Pietrus

I was really angry when they introduced it because for some reason it didn’t worked well on my PC, Now it works as it’s intended to and perhaps it still looks a bit wired but only because we newer had a software that respect Windows DPI…

          • ayespy

You have my sympathies. I feel the same way about it, but Opera is still my preferred browser so until they see the light, I have opted to change the entire operating environment for the sake of this single program (since it is my primary work tool, and how I make a living.)

This is upside down and backwards as far as most user priorities go, but it would appear Opera doesn’t see it that way. The fact that you can fix it with a flag in FF, though, is promising. Maybe Opera will see their way clear to provide an equivalent option.

      • Inquisitor

Perhaps Opera should decrease its default (100%) UI a few points, so that it more or less matches the (very tiny) Windows DPI at 100%.

        • ayespy

It would really only be a few points. Each Opera toolbar is nearly the exact height of the Windows taskbar at 100%. At 120% or 125%, however, the Opera toolbars are absolutely huge. And, of course, the most space-wasting feature of the browser is the same feature which you cannot adjust.

I like the look of the new speed dial. With the menu on the left, very good. But I want the thumbnails to be a screen-captures of that page, not the favicons. It’s too bland when everything is a favicon. Because of this I go back to the old speed dial. But overall the new one is good.

It would be better if you allowed transparency settings for the thumbnails.

Also, when can we put our own search engine in the address bar?

(My comment plus the comment I replied to.)

I like how it looks. For the links I have at the top this is going to be splendid, sleek, beautiful, but:
The new Speed Dial is going to kill my saved “sessions” on it, inside and outside the folders. It’s going to ruin the experience beyond the partner sites that already force their logo for every sub-page.

All the pages from the same “domain” will look just the same, opposed to the extremely useful and easy characteristic of seeing the actual pages thumbnails/previews right there so I can recognize instantly what pages are those I saved and visit/move/remove. Displaying the title, either permanently or on mouse hover, isn’t a solution (1. require hover 2. they don’t have good titles to begin with, the ones that web designers / people choose to call them 3. I wouldn’t remember the exact title of all of them, pictures of the pages I was visiting are much easier to remember than their tab title). :/

When it hits stable where all my data lies, I need a solution to keep using my sessions/SD”bookmarks” this magnificent way I have been using since the new Opera has been released…

Is there a way to disable Click-to-play specifically for a certain plugin? When I download/open a pdf I almost certainly do it on purpose so the “protection” of click-to-play isn’t necessary.

    • Leonardo Gomes

      Not that i know.

      • cgebhard

It is slightly counter-intuitive that a “built-in” pdf-viewer is handled like any third party plug-in. If at least there was a possibility to add an exception for *.pdf (and not just domains).

Sure, not all users activate click-to-play, but in that case I see no point in switching from pdf.js at the moment.

        • Leonardo Gomes

It’s because it is a plugin.

Why does opera:about use webkit vendor prefixes?

  • Darklink88

    Wow! Opera 25 rocks!

Just some suggestions regarding the bookmarking system.
I think the heart menu works in a frustrating way and it needs to be improved. In my opinion it shouldn’t add the page to bookmarks automatically after clicking the heart icon, but the bookmark should be saved only after the user chooses the location in which the bookmark will be stored (for example a folder or the speed dial). Let’s say I want to add a page to the speed dial: I click on the heart menu and then I press the speed dial icon. Well, In the current implementation I have the page bookmarked 2 times in both the speed dial and in the bookmarks folder.
In addition it should be possible to delete a bookmark added by mistake directly from the heart menu.

    • Herr Pietrus

But it would be even better, since they decided to remove stash, to give us two separate icons for SD and stash inside the omnibox, like it was previously. Now there won’t be any problem with understanding what they represent, because heart icon is assigned to bookmarks exclusively.

  • taneli

Is it possible to create a POP3/IMAP mail fetcher with an addon currently in Opera?

    • Lacedaemon

That’s also what I’d like to know… until now there isn’t anything like it :/ gmail, yahoo, outlook, aren’t people tired of the same spy-shit- webmails?

      • taneli

Indeed, i haven’t checked on how the extensions work and what API’s there are, but seeing there aren’t any of these extensions, i came to ponder if it’s even possible.

        • Oliver

Unfortunately, extensions aren’t allowed to open direct socket connections and therefore can’t connect to a POP3/IMAP server 🙁

          • taneli

Figured there’d be something like that.

          • Der Herr Nick

Would be great if the opera devs created the needed APIs for mail extensions.

  • docwho

i see that you took my advise for the speed dial and i hope to see a single button in the opera window for the bookmarks soon. i think you’re going the right way.
i like to add to the speeddial suggestion list that the dials should be able to be multiple sizes. (yeah i know.. is kinda hard atm) also i think that the folders in sd are useless when you have bookmarks.

    • Mat M

I don’t have bookmarks, but I have speeddial.
Bookmarks are my stash, actually. I tried the stash, but mixed topics are a pain, so I went to bookmarks when they arrived.
SpeedDial & SD folders are neat. I just needed grouping in the stash to forget bookmarks

    • Herr Pietrus

I don;t think that folders will disappear from SD. First of all, they are sometimes useful, secondly – inside the folders are stored our saved tabs aka sessions.

    • docwho

ok, sometimes are useful (the more options, the better) and because they are already implemented i guess that they will stay until opera change its “engine” to firefox or something 🙂

  • Mat M

    Hello

    About new Speed Dial:

    * heuristics for finding an image are not smart enough for me.
    – It does not use the favicon anymore, which I would prefer over the url element.
    – It does not manage sites with redirection : e.g., I kept a speed dial to http://www.meteo.fr which will redirect to the main site http://www.meteofrance.com/accueil, and it puts the meteo.fr text instead of the logo

    * squares and flat colors with text make them more win8-like, but I don’t care (win7 and linux currently)

    * Sometimes, it finds something that does not match : Speed Dial to http://blog.jgpruitt.com/2011/04/10/personal-scrum/ gave me the below picture, which is not representative of the page layout nor its content. So I think we need a way to force the SD, by enabling on or more of these choices: to use the preview (like the old SD tiles); to choose another pic of the site; to use the favicon; to use the “text mode” of the url (like the new tile); to use a custom text in the tile.

    * Some sites have many subsites (like yahoo), and they are filtered out from the text, so, useless when you have sports & games in the same SD folder.

    * And please get back the search tool in SD. For thos who migrated from old bookmarks with joy and happiness, this is a must have

    * Ability to customize the search engine in SD also (and to use one of our own, not only one of the four default ones).

    * Provide the Discover and SD buttons on the Bookmarks page

    * Migrating stash to unsorted bookmarks is great, ty !

    That’s it !

One more question: I didn’t see any word about that: is there any chance we will be able to *open* a document in one-click, instead of the download and click operations of today ?

  • cgebhard

    About the speeddial:

+ it looks nice and modern
+ I like the navigation bar on the left
+ unlike previous posters I like the darkening of the background when you open a SD-folder

    – It is very really confusing when you have several entries of the same domain and can’t distinguish the thumbnails*
    – when accessing the bookmarks the navigation bar for SD and discover etc. should stay visible in my opinion

*Maybe you consider SD a collection of links to frequently used top-level domains (or one single deeper link on a domain) and thus there’s no need for thumbnail-selection because there won’t be two same thumbnails anyway. This might be the ideal way to use it.
But as long as there is no direct link to bookmarks such as the “Show SD”-toolbar-button I as a lazy user am always tempted to just use SD-folders to collect more than one link of a website, since that way I can save several extra clicks over the day.

    • Mayhem

is not a big thing, but there is a white vertical line on the end of every text selection row
it happens in all builds for a long time now and it’s Opera only (no vert. lines in Chrome)

  • Rob Segal

One small change to the new speed dial that is a change for the worse in my opinion is that you have to hover over speed dial groups to see their names. Between that, the thumbnails getting smaller and no more page previews, I’m pretty lost when looking at the new start page.

  • ahoj1234

    I want a confirmation on a bug:
    page when experienced:
    http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/Steel_dragon?veaction=edit

    how to reproduce it:
    – open the page (edit mode)
    – try edit some drops in “Drops” section (by click on it and then click on the pen)

    – try to use sidebars to scroll (not the whole page, but these new – in “pop-up”)

    why reported:
    can’t scroll content there

    tested in:
Opera dev (this build) – don’t work (don’t expected nor wanted!)
Firefox 31 – work (as expected)
if confirmed I will consider to fill a bug report.
    W8.1 separate install

    • Lacedaemon

      confirmed W7-64bit

      • ahoj1234

yeah, at least the sidebars work when dragged on the whole page (in edit mode while editing). Sidebars for editing “pop-up” (or whatever it is) do not work no matter how hard you try…
so thanks for confirmation, going to sleep now, hopefully will report it via bug tracker tomorrow…

    • al_ghul

well the same here – scroll bug behaviour in Opera Dev, well actually in other sites too and it occured occasionally in previous dev versions- e.g.:

      – right side list in http://liveuamap.com/

      or

      – main content in http://www.deezer.com/ – actually it behaves that for quite a long time in previous versions (wonder why anybody/if ever mentioned this before!)

In Opera Stable and FF 31 in above examples and runescape wikia it doesn’t occur! Win7x64, 4GB RAM, Intel Core 2 Duo U7300@1,3 GHz, Intel 4 Series mobile graphics.

p.s. of course, when manually dragging scroll bar – it works.

So, NPAPI Flash apparently causes the Opera window to not be able to be focused anymore… used PPAPI for almost a week and didn’t have this problem at all.
Switched to NPAPI and boom, this bug reappears after 5minutes and continues to happen.
Now, PPAPI just doesn’t work all that very well, with extensions, with youtube in general, so it’s bloody awfull to use, not sure if this is the fault of Flash itself, or the Opera’s implementation of it, but couple of things:
    1) In youtube, it won’t remember the last sound level setting you had.
    2) Magic Actions extension is having trouble working with it.

    • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

is it the same with version 15 of flash player?

  • al_ghul

OK developers – I have one idea which grew in me through the time: bookmarks bar folders menu pull-down case;).

When a list of one of bookmark’s folders is too long to fit the screen height – it fills all screen height, which abandons acces to next/previous bookmark bar position (it obscures a part of the bookmarks bar). when one wants to get the next/previous one element or pull next/prev bkm’s folder down – it has to move cursor out of the whole menu and try again. and sometimes it stucks in pulling down “menu nightmare” when not moving too precisely;). e.g. in FF folder’s pull-down menu are always lower than bookmark’s folder position – so one can easily change this folder to next/previous one pull-down menu.

I propose to have that option or to change it completely, like it is in FF, because, as folder content grows – it always will at some stage overfill any height of the screen and pulldown “menu nightmare” will begin;).

Down there I pasted a comparison of this effect in Opera Dev and FF32:

    • Marko Koivuniemi

I agree. Much more usable with FF’s way.

I have problems in html5 videos on youtube. No video starts and reports an error in the center of the video window.(Error Ocours) I use Linux Mint 64. I wonder what plugin is needed to play videos or if it is necessary.

Hi Robson, you can try this workaround of the issue, or download FFmpeg, unpack, and compile it as it is described here, and as it’s shown below:./configure --enable-shared --build-suffix=-ffmpeg
      make
      sudo make install
      sudo ldconfig

Hi Robson, you can try this workaround, or download FFmpeg, unpack it, and compile, as shown below:tar xvf ffmpeg-x.x.x.tar.bz2 && cd ffmpeg-x.x.x
      ./configure --enable-shared --build-suffix=-ffmpeg
      make
sudo make install && sudo ldconfig
Note: you need replace x.x.x with the current version number. For more details, please have a look here.

  • Ash Conlon

My Speed dial has been completely wiped?! I had a lot of important shortcuts on there that I can’t remember off the top of my head. Any idea how to get them back ??

  • duhduhduh0

Hi, regarding 64-bit mac. is it an auto silent update on opera’s side?

  • latitude51uk

Thanks for your response to my query. I used your surreal Konami code to enter the Power user settings and was able to adjust the width and height of the Speed Dial thumbnails. Wouldn’t it be possible for the user to access the Power user settings in a rather more conventional way, for example, through a menu option?

However, this doesn’t change the immense amount of wasted screen space on either side of the columns of thumbnails. I’ve been using Opera for more than ten years/ and I still use 12.17 as my principal browser. As you know, 12.17 makes full use of the width of the screen and that is far more preferable.

But that waste of space is only one of the many aspects of the new generation of Opera that I fail to understand. The worst problem I have is with bookmarks. In 12.17 I have 2500+ bookmarks. I was only able to import them into 25.0 by accident, I’ve no idea how I managed to do it.

Currently, when I attempt to open Bookmark importer I receive this message:

    This webpage is not available
The webpage at opera://bookmark-importer/ might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

So I cannot import any more bookmarks. In addition, I cannot understand how to create a new folder in an existing bookmark folder and then place a new bookmark in that new folder. For example, if I right-click on an existing folder in the Bookmarks bar, there is no option to “Create a New Folder”, which would be useful. There is the option “Save as Speed Dial folder” which I do not understand and which I will not experiment with because it may irretrievably damage the existing folder.

When I click on the capital “O” in the top left of the screen a drop-down menu appears with two “Bookmarks” options. Why aren’t the functions contained in the two options integrated into one “Bookmarks” option?

When I click on the first “Bookmarks” option and then click on “Add to bookmarks” in the submenu, the new bookmark is then listed as a new entry in that first “Bookmarks” option. However, I cannot understand what I am supposed to do with that new entry. How do I then create a new folder in an existing bookmark folder in which I can place that new entry?

If I click the second “Bookmarks” option in the “O” drop-down menu, a display of “Unsorted bookmarks” appears. Again, I cannot understand what I am supposed to do with the new entry in that window. Also, there is a list of “My folders” in a left-hand panel. They are not my folders. The bookmarks bar contains the folders that I have created over the years in Opera xx.xx and imported into 25.0. I can drag one of the unsorted bookmarks to one of those folders in the left-hand panel, but that’s of no use to me.

Also, when I click on “+New Folder” in that panel, a new folder is created called “New folder” without any opportunity to rename it. What is going on?

I find it very depressing to use Bookmarks in Opera 25.0, that’s why I persist in using 12.17. Why is there no longer the “Manage Bookmarks” option in 25.0, which is absolutely indispensable in 12.17?

I feel that with 25.0, a gang of thugs have brutally beaten an old friend to the point where the friend is no longer recognisable and is no longer able to function.

I apologise for the length of this, but I know I’m not alone in being frustrated and bitterly disappointed by the Bookmarks in 25.0.

    • Dave-H

When you click “new folder” the name “new folder” appears highlighted, and you can then just type your new name in and press “Add”.
I agree it’s not particularly intuitive. I also find it strange that you cannot delete or rename folders using the entries in the folder tree on the left. You have to open the root folder and do it on the items when they’re displayed in the right hand pane.
I also find it annoying that hitting “back” when browsing in the bookmarks folders closes the bookmarks instead of going to the previously viewed level.

Total dick move dumping Snow Leopard support. I have a 2010 Mac Pro running 64-bit 10.6.8, why can’t I run your new 64-bit version?

I have no intention of upgrading until and unless Apple fixes Mail.app so it isn’t a slow, complete piece of crap compared to the Snow Leopard version. Opera is my preferred browser these days. This sucks.
