Today, we released an update to Opera Developer 25, and we have a little present. For many of you, it is not actually a big surprise that we are working on a bookmark manager. But, in this release, the bookmark flag is enabled by default.

Furthermore, this update comes with many fixes for things like MP3, H.264, HiDPI and more. As always, a complete list of changes can be found in the changelog.

Bookmarks

First, take a look at the main Opera menu. You’ll find a new item there – Bookmarks.

bookmark_menu

Play around with that menu and see what happens. Now you can quickly enable or disable the bookmarks bar by selecting Show bookmark bar.

If you want to bookmark a page, click the heart icon, found on the right side of the combined address and search bar. We think it’s cool that Opera now suggests a thumbnail for your new bookmarks. There are a few suggestions and you can change the image if you think another works better for you.

bookmark_add2

The bookmarks page (found by clicking Show all bookmarks in the main menu), contains a list of folders on the left. Use these to manage your bookmarks. You can organize your folders and personalize how you want your bookmarks to be kept.

Please keep in mind that development is ongoing. The look, feel and functionality of bookmarks could change in future releases. That said, try it out. Let us know what you think.

Thanks, Kudła, for this Bookmarks build of Opera Developer !

It (bookmarks) was the single most contentious issue for the new Chromium Opera developement and today this promise has been fulfilled and finally this issue can be put to eternal rest.

    • L33t4opera

Hi Nanana1, by the way, his name is Przemek 😉

  • Denyer

This is looking very promising (Insert obligatory comment regarding tabs-on-side here) – have you any insight you can add to the presence of “My Groups” and “My Folders” – Functionally they appear identical ?

  • Sup

Do users get the ability to nickname bookmarks? For example, I could create a bookmark and name it “food”, and upon typing it “food” in the address bar it would bring me to the current menu of my workplace (the url of the bookmark).

    • rafaeljvieira

That is not possible at the moment.

      • IllusionMH

I’m waiting for this functionality. It was very usable in O12

    • senna_4ever

i am waiting for it too

    • Footman

      This is called “tags”.

      • Vux777

no, old Opera had nickname system for bookmarks
        tagging is something else

      • Frenzie

Tags would probably be called “labels” in Opera vocabulary, at least if we are to take our cue from M2. Labels then would be dynamic folders — a sorely missed chance in Firefox, incidentally. Nicknames are called keywords in Firefox. I can spot neither labels (“tags”) nor nicknames (“keywords”).

    • Courtney Miles

I’m itching for this also and continue to use Opera 12 for this feature.

My work uses Jira and Confluence. Content can be buried deep and bookmarks are clumsy. With nicknames and saved searches in O12 I have something like a CLI interface for navigating these sites. I can’t give it up.

    • L33t4opera

Hi, you can already search by typing part of the name, or the url, using the search bar on the BM page: open the BM (“Ctrl+Shift+B”), press “Ctrl+F”, then type: part of the name, or the url of the bookmark(s), that you want to search.

Regardless of the above, if you still want search by tags, you can install the Bookmarks Tagger extension, which allows you to add tags to the bookmarks, and search by the tags from the address bar, as follows: open the web page to which you want to add a tag/tags, for example: youtube.com, click the extension button on the toolbar, click on the input field, below the “Tags” label, enter some tags, e.g. “yt yv”, then click the “Save” button. After that, go to the address bar, and type “bt yt”, or “bt yv”, and press enter. I’m aware, that this is far from the perfect solution, but it just works 😉

To install it, you need to install one of the following extensions, which allow the installation of extensions from the Chrome Web Store website: the Extension source viewer, or the Download Chrome Extension.

      • http://www.operaturkiye.net/ Mağruf Çolakoğlu

It is nice extension but actually not usefull. After recall tag from adress bar it is open extension page in a short time and frowarding to the URL. It can be used but not for power users 🙂

        • L33t4opera

Hi Mağruf, yep, that’s why i wrote also: “I’m aware, that this is far from the perfect solution, but it just works ;-)” 😛

  • Inquisitor

    An issue and two request:

    – Bookmaks list view shows only colored bars, with no text (see attachment)

    – I think the ‘bookmarks’ and ‘recently closed’ in the O-menu should be in the same section as ‘Speed Dial’ and ‘Discover’.
    – Can we have a Bookmarks button on the Address bar?

    • inDigazzZ

      Same here…

    • Dainis Valdmanis

I have similar mess. Colors partly covers text.
      Manjaro linux

      • http://www.lalaurette.com.ar/ Sebastián Lalaurette

Same for me. Why all the colors anyway? They seem to be random and I prefer a clean, colorless list instead.

        • Radik Gradenko

I guess the reason is that it’s easier to distinguish them without reading all the text. More visual.

          • Lacedaemon

That’s plain stupid, you can’t read anything. They could just color the background while keeping the text visible.

        • oCircuit

For the thumbnail view, it’s very useful.

    • http://www.facebook.com/hector.maciasayala Hector Macias Ayala

I knew I saw those somewhere, haha.

    • Radik Gradenko

Same here, but curiously enough it doesn’t happen with ALL bookmarks, only the older ones. Or something. Anyway, re-adding the bookmarks fixes it. Better than nothing I guess…

      • http://opera.com gladykov

        Hi Radik,

What do you mean by saying” “Older ones” ? Are they bookmarks imported from other browser? And what system are you using?

I try to reproduce this issue, but with no luck currently.

        • Alex

In my case it happens with the items that were stashed and now were transferred to Unsorted Bookmarks.

        • Leonardo Gomes

It seems that when the bookmarks are in “list view” mode, part of the bookmark name is covered by the background color of its thumbnail if the thumbnail is the Coast-like one.

If the thumbnail is a real snapshot of the page, the problem doesn’t seems to happen.

  • Cjcr

Delete the selected bookmarks doesn’t work.

    http://i.imgur.com/1tCKrgc.png

    • nanana1

Delete works only on the Opera –> Bookmarks drop-down menu and not on the Bookmarks page itself.

      • Cjcr

Yeah, I know, but in this way should work too. Maybe isn’t yet implemented.

    • senna_4ever

i thought it blocks the entry of being deleted

  • Muhammad Ubaid Raza

    Very nice!

    Suggestion:
How about enabling bookmarks bar for only speed dial page?

    Issue:

    1) Opera turbo does not seems to be working on most of the sites. When page loading starts opera turbo icon appears and the vanishes, anyway to troubleshoot or find cause of this issue?

    2) For some site, favicons rendering on Bookmark list view is not buggy (very large) e.g. Github, stackoverflow.

    • Operalino

I like your idea of enabling the bookmarks bar only for speed dial page 🙂

  • Кostadin

Thank you guys and gals! Apart from bookmarks, can you share plans about the new start page layout? Will you push it as default and more important to me, will you keep the current default start page which I prefer?

  • Aoyagi

Nice, that’s first of the many lost features back. Speaking of lost features, what about opensourcing Presto already?

    • rafaeljvieira

Presto is still used in several products, such as Opera TV Browser, Opera Mini, Opera Mail and obviously Opera 12, which is still supported. It is unlikely that it will be open-sourced.

      • Aoyagi

Those products will probably be used for a long, long time (O12 is also still used, you know?). Not relevant.

        • rafaeljvieira

Please read this for more insights on this matter: https://forums.opera.com/discussion/comment/15175094#Comment_15175094

          • Aoyagi

Well, that’s not very insightful. It’s theories and wrong comparisons. There could be legal reasons (that can be explained by Opera staff) or security reasons, which would be actually solved by opensourcing it.

          • pekikuubik

That’s all speculation. We don’t and can’t know the specifics of the contracts between Opera and their licensees until an Opera employee says something regarding this subject… and I’ve yet to see one do so.

But if I were to speculate as well, I’d say every one of those contracts says something like “we reserve the right to do whatever we want with our engine”. In fact, I don’t see how open sourcing Presto is even relevant to licensees anyway. Like, id open sourcing their engines and Epic open sourcing Unreal Engine (to everyone who gives them $19) hasn’t stopped any games from being made.

          • SQL

Opera devs have already commented on this; No opensourcing when there are still products using Presto.

    • http://www.facebook.com/hector.maciasayala Hector Macias Ayala

Presto is intellectual propierty, not under any open use license, and it is the core of many Opera products, abandon that notion.

      • Aoyagi

Kindly remind me (and yourself) what happened with Netscape Navigator. And that’s just one example from the top of my head.

        • http://www.facebook.com/hector.maciasayala Hector Macias Ayala

Never heard Netscape did develop anything for smart TV’s, GPS devices, even trucks!! The PC was crucial for Netscape, we’re not even close to being the center of Opera’s business model, all on the contrary, this is the one platform that barely makes any revenue for them.

That doesn’t mean Opera is struggling to get by, quite the opposite, just we’re only one platform more for them, their business is very different than that of the rest.

    • Leonardo Gomes

I wouldn’t expect anything regarding Presto being opensourced anytime on the next years.

  • Cjcr

    Idea:

I think, when you click on the Speed Dial’s bookmarks button, the current page should be replace with the bookmarks page.

Currently it opens another new tab with the bookmarks page.

  • XypherCode

Thanks! The only thing left I guess is a proper sync feature.

    • http://www.facebook.com/hector.maciasayala Hector Macias Ayala

Custom sessions, status bar, dropdown arrow, there’s a long road ahead.

      • XypherCode

Yeah but syncing is what I really need right now since I work on multiple machines.

        • P0lip

Try running opera with “–with-feature:synch” switch. I didn’t test
it myself, though, but there is a sync option – probably only for
          speeddials currently

          • XypherCode

Hey thanks I didn’t know that. Will test for sure. 😀

          • P0lip

You can enable the flag aswell 🙂

          • XypherCode

Thanks! Tried it out and it worked! Still a little buggy especially when using an Opera account. When logging in from a different PC it says wrong username (weird) so I used my google acct instead. But yeah at least speed dials sync. 😀

          • P0lip

Its better than nothing, hope they will add bookmarks aswell when they become standardized.

      • Cryio

Custom sessions are arguably not needed anymore with Folders on Speed Dial.

        • http://www.facebook.com/hector.maciasayala Hector Macias Ayala

Custom sessions would allow me to start with 3 pinned tabs for 3 mail services and Speed Dial in the fourth.

I don’t see how Speed Dial folders can replace that config.

  • https://christoph142.wordpress.com/ Christoph142

    two new flags btw:
    #bookmarks-sharing & #tab-menu

    • rafaeljvieira

Any idea what #tab-menu flag is for? After enabling it, I couldn’t find any change (I probably missed it).

      • Petter Nilsen

All good things come to those who wait ™.

        • rafaeljvieira

Great! I’ll be waiting to see what’s coming. 😉

        • A. R.

bleh, bookmarks were not even planned from the get go. It was after O15 was published the big roar made Odevs to rethink.

          • reesmichael1

            Your point is?

          • A. R.

they needed to rewrite O16 for where to start building bookmarks, and it took 9 complete releases for a basic feature such as bookmarks which could of been in O15.

          • rafaeljvieira

Oh no, the devs do care about the community thoughts and change the roadmap to meet their users’ needs. Sacrilege.

          • A. R.

The real question is how much? Opera with bookmarks still doesn’t convince.

          • http://www.facebook.com/hector.maciasayala Hector Macias Ayala

Not a priority, which a different issue.

          • MarkG54321

What makes you think this? Inside knowledge, or just assumptions?

        • Vux777

          sounds like Guinness commercial ツ
little piece of art (that video)

          • blackcoder

            I like Guinness. 😀

      • Muhammad Ubaid Raza

I think its same as Mozilla Tab preview, which shows all tabs in single window but probable it not ready yet.

      • https://christoph142.wordpress.com/ Christoph142

Yeah, I had a quick look.
AFAIKT the flag is in, but the feature isn’t yet.

      • Guest

i hope that it’s something like ‘Windows’ panel in Opera 12

      • inDigazzZ

i hope that it’s something like ‘Windows’ panel in oldschool Opera
        http://imgur.com/FMB19U5

  • Alex Parker

On piratebay.org huge popup (when you browse torrents) overlays taskbar.

  • Elzo Lubbers

Been looking at it for a bit by playing with the flag. Looking forward to how it will evolve. The moment I can start using Opera again is getting closer and closer.

  • Muhammad Ubaid Raza

Opera share? whats that? deserves a blog post? 😀

    • rafaeljvieira

I tried to follow the links but it seems that there is no proper documentation at the moment. 🙁 But it sounds interesting…

    • Leonardo Gomes

Probably a tool to allow pages to be shared, like the one in Opera Mini/Mobile?

      • senna_4ever

it’s kinda that “addthis” extension, that shares urls to facebook/twitter?

        • Leonardo Gomes

          Maybe. I have no idea.

        • Leonardo Gomes

I’ve just see the feature and it seems to be something to allow opera users to share their bookmarks with other opera users i guess.

    • http://ruario.ghost.io/ Ruarí Ødegaard

It will get a blog post if and when it is ready for some real testing. We don’t always talk about a feature the moment a flag appears, as you saw with Tab Preview.

      • Muhammad Ubaid Raza

Ohh.. yes we will wait. Seems interesting… 🙂

  • Lacedaemon

    – Icon is missing for adding Bookmarks to the unsorted bookmarks when you have heart menu disabled. It only shows Stash.

-Not being able to select & delete multiple bookmarks or select & move multiple bookmarks to a folder. Doing it one by one is a big pain in the ass.

    – Content based search in Bookmarks (like in Stash) is a must. I know you are working on it, but hurry 🙂

-Why no right click options to the left bar? Like right-click on specific folder -> delete Folder.

-Folder on bar does not show sub-folder hierarchy

    • http://www.lalaurette.com.ar/ Sebastián Lalaurette

      – A sidebar version of the bookmarks page, which would be the best way to implement your last point, IMHO.

      • Lacedaemon

I’d also like that but judging by their concepts and design philosophy so far I find that unlikely to happen, Everything is developed so “multiplatformy” right now that the lowest common denominator will continue directing the design…

        • dcomplex

-snip- ok now you’re circumcised.. oh wait.. no, they should make it a sidebar and bring back panels from opera 12. Also the downloads window. I still use 12 because of the downloads panel.

    • Test Drive

Thanks for working on the bookmarks manager…

but just as I always insisted, a Sidebar (yeah… just like opera 12.x) is needed when using bookmarks…

if the user has to open a new tab and lose sight of what he’s already working on, the bookmark manager loses some of its productivity gains…

I’m not saying a tab for the Bookmarks Manager is not needed… I’m saying a Sidebar (just like opera 12.x) would prove useful for users and their productivity using Opera…

      Thanks again.

      • Christian Landschuetzer

yes, how could they forget a sidebar – those brains might me genius, but USELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • tr3w

      – Please, make it possible to sort the bookmarks…

      • L33t4opera

Hi Tr3w, you can sort them alphabetically in two ways:
        1. In the O-Menu>Bookmarks, and right-click on the folder of your choice, then select “Sort Alphabetically”, as it’s shown below: http://i.imgur.com/m8lhn47.png,
        2. Go to the Bookmarks Bar, and right-click on the folder of your choice, then click on “Sort Alphabetically”, as below: http://i.imgur.com/YzSinoi.png

        • tr3w

That’s nice, but I still can’t sort the Bookmarks bar itself…
And of course it would make more sense to have a sort option in the “Bookmarks Manager”…

          • L33t4opera

The whole functionality of the Bookmarks solution (in particular the BM) is in early state of development, which means, that this is still work in progress, and therefore unfinished 😉

Nevertheless, in the meantime (until the time before, the developers would implement such feature), you can install one of the available extensions, such as, for example the “Tidy Bookmarks Tree“, and use it e.g. to sort the BB’s items by title (even, as you said: the BB itself), as it’s shown in the screenshot, here.

To install it, you need to install one of the following extensions, which allow the installation of extensions from the Chrome Web Store website: the “Extension source viewer“, or the “Download Chrome Extension“.

    • http://opera.com gladykov

      Hi Lacedaemon,

Thank you for you input. Most of hassles with bookmarks we already know, and we are working towards improving UX. However I cannot reproduce this bug: – Folder on bar does not show sub-folders and hierarchy.

I’m able to navigate between folders and subfolders in bookmark bar.

Can you tell, on which system it does reproduce?

      • Lacedaemon

Hi gladykov and thanks for your efforts. Sorry for not being that clear but I meant the left vertical bar (the grey column), and the missing tree structure there, not the bookmarks bar. I think others have mentioned it as well.

    • http://www.webastyczny.pl/ Miłosz W.

Same here! Still shitty! I can select multiple folders but can’t fxxking move them! And how do you even delete a folder on the left???? IDIOTIC. Sorry, Opera is still unusable!!!!

  • Inquisitor

Adding a bookmark to a (sub)folder is still quite complicated. There’s just one ‘Add to Bookmarks’ option. It’s not possible to add a bookmark to a specific folder or subfolder straight away.
Please add ‘Add Bookmark’ to right click context menu. That way, when I want to bookmark a page, I can quickly move trough the bookmark folders of the O-menu, right click on the appropriate folder for the context menu, then left click to select ‘Add Bookmark’ in one go. Quick and easy!

  • INFINUM

    it’s a miracle! I love you guys!

    • A. R.

A miracle indeed. After all from the get go it was planned that the new Opera would not have bookmarks. And when O15 was released the Odevs still quite didn’t understood why anyone would want bookmarks. It was only after the big roar from community that made the devs rethink.

Miracle? Bookmarks is going to be last, and only, feature they are bringing from the old Opera. Trust me.

      • http://www.tbochenek.de thorbenb

Wanna bet for a sixpack of beer? 😉

      • Wando Schneider

An important thing to consider here, is that O12 was built on the course of some years. You cannot compare a browser with years of development with a baby browser like O15…. be patient! 🙂

        • Lacedaemon

Yes but not everything is being reinvented. If I have written code for something, I already know the how’s and why’s so it takes far little time to program it once again.

          • Wando Schneider

You’re right. I’m not seeing old things beeing implementing just like they were on Opera-presto. And you need to consider that now they are dealing with a new engine.

          • http://www.lalaurette.com.ar/ Sebastián Lalaurette

No, it’s like saying that a senior engineer that has built a wooden bridge over the course of four months can’t build a concrete bridge of the same size and shape in a week.

          • Lacedaemon

you could say that also, (not counting cure time 😉 )

  • IllusionMH

Unable to select bookmarks folder when I’m adding bookmark through heart menu. Also bookmark image when you choose domain on solid background takes all place and there are no description. http://take.ms/dLD04

    • L33t4opera

Unable to select bookmarks folder when I’m adding bookmark through heart menu. Only Unsorted bookmarks is available and on click arrow only changes direction and no dropdown is shown.

I can confirm this, it worked fine in the previous build (25.0.1583.1).

  • HelloBye

Please add Ixquick/StartPage and DuckDuckGo to the built-in search engines. Users can add them themselves, but since engines added by users are not allowed to be made a default search engine, it’s pretty useless.

    • Denyer

Also, the default search engines cannot be modified or removed. I want something else on “y” – Not Yahoo! 🙂

      • rafaeljvieira

Please check the answer I provided 🙂

        • Denyer

Apologies. Disqus is horribly broken/laggy so I didn’t see that before posting! So now we’re just stuck with Google on ‘g’ – hopefully one day… 🙂 Nice one!

        • NoName

I have done this until now, but the file is now gone (happend in previous dev version).
So now Yahoo is back 🙁

          • rafaeljvieira

Everytime Opera updates you’ll need to repeat those steps.

          • NoName

I have had this for a year, without needing to repeat that step.
But as I said, the file is gone now. I can’t edit something that is not there 🙂

          • NoName

Ah. I just checked what you do. You rename the file.
If you instead change the “y” for Yahoo to “yy”, you can now choose your own “y”. That’s what I did, and it kept my settings on updates.

    • rafaeljvieira
      • HelloBye

Deleting that file only deletes all search engines except Google, it still does not allow me to use Ixquick or DuckDuckGo by default without using a prefix.
Even if the file can be edited to add other search engines, this is of no use to the average Joe, who is New Opera’s target market.

        • http://www.facebook.com/hector.maciasayala Hector Macias Ayala

Average Joe hardly will look beyond Google as default search engine.

          • HelloBye

There are enough non technical users caring more and more about the privacy, yet there is not 1 search engine in Opera’s list that has good privacy.

Even so, technical users can’t change it as well.

          • http://www.facebook.com/hector.maciasayala Hector Macias Ayala

You have Ghostery, Disconnect, among other extensions to help you with that. Not to mention Ad blockers, two types of extensions I will never go without.

Seriously I’m much anti-google as I am anti apple and anti-whatever tries to make decisions for me, about what I need or want, including search suggestions in browsers.

I bookmark my stuff so I barely do search for things.

I’ve taken my shots more than once with other search engines, looking to mark a distance from google, but the results are never the same, Bing has a very decent Image Search, I know it’s become a permanent component of my digital activity, not exclusive but not excluded anymore. And as for news it’s bookmarks and Smart RSS reader, I´m also giving Thunderbird a shot for that purpose and for mail, before it was Opera M2, that’s why I’m never excited nor interested in news about WebUI changes to mail services, and I don’t use Gmail either.

My point is you can use Google and keep them at bay at the same time.

  • icion

Add recycle bin for bookmarks. Now it is not possible undo accidentally deleted bookmarks.

    • Vorpal

Not sure about recycle bin (I don’t use it anywhere on pc), but other way is might be better. After deleting show link for a short time to undo last action.

    • Raylan Givens

Ι don’t understand why each one wants his own feature in order to become bloated as shi*. Like the old Opera. A ton of useless features.

      • Onaj Tamo

If you don’t like the quantity of features then you are not the average opera user I am afraid.

        • Martin Brada

How did you come to the conlusion that average Opera user likes a lot of features? Furthemore, knowing that there are some people like that, they do not need to be in the Opera’s target group nowadays.

          • Onaj Tamo

Observation. It just is like that.90% of Opera desktop users I have met on different forums etc are power users.

The desktop version of Opera is mostly used by desktop power users. In fact Opera on desktop just does not have enough marketing power to reach the unskilled pc user. Those guys think they are geeks if they use Firefox.

The move to chrome was not done because they wanted to switch their user base,it was done as a long term strategic decision. And also on the recent blog posts I see a tendency, maybe a small trend that although they don’t wan’t to recreate Opera 12 on a different engine, they do want to reach the same number of features in like 2-3 years from now on.

          • Martin Brada

Sure, 90% people on forums may be power users. Selection bias.

          • Onaj Tamo

Not only on forums, everyone, there are only 3 options from all the people I know:
a)I am not a power user and I have never even heard about Opera
b)I am a power user but chose not to use opera
c)I am a power user and use Opera

            With some exceptions ofc.

          • Martin Brada

How large is your statistical sample?

          • Onaj Tamo

            Several hundred people.From the forums,around 4%.

          • Martin Brada

Did you make a survey or something like that? Normally, would not expect such a high number and so precise datum of the “forum-part”.

          • Onaj Tamo

Unfortunately, not, but my memory serves me well.Hopefully.

          • Martin Brada

I am afraid you did not understand me correctly. You are making this up.

          • mb

I do “IT Support” as a side job. Currently the browser trend I have noticed is: Chrome -> IE -> FF. That’s it. No Opera. These are all normal people, no power users. I wish they’d move from Chrome though, it’s a magnet for PUPs.

          • Onaj Tamo

maybe, maybe not…However Opera has always(ok maybe Opera chrome versions are an exception) been a browser for the power users and early adopters.Ever since 1998.

      • Lacedaemon

A recycle bin in the bookmarks GUI a bloated feature? ooooook…
Also talking about Presto Opera’s features and considering it bloat shows you ‘re speaking out of your a**…

      • dcomplex

Screw you. Just because you were a noob and couldn’t use opera’s features doesn’t make it bloated.

      • oCircuit

A good Browser works this way. An intelligent integration of many features, which do not impose to anyone.

      • Alaknár

Considering the “old, bloated as shi*, Opera” was still lighter and faster than most of the other browsers on the market…

    • http://eliotime.com/ eliotime3000

Well, it’s time to consider to try Mozilla SeaMonkey (a complete Internet Suite).

    • Raestloz

Wouldn’t a recycle bin be simply “another folder deleted bookmarks go to”?

  • Dave-H

Window size still not being remembered!
    🙁

    • Helge Andre Gjølme

I’m not able to reproduce that issue..

      • Dave-H

That’s good news, and must explain why more people haven’t mentioned this!
        What system are you on?
I’m on Windows XP 32 bit, in 1920×1080 resolution.

Will give it a shot on XP and see if I can reproduce there.

CTRL + F is unable to find anything about Opera Share in the article, why you people keep talking about it?

      • L33t4opera

Hi Hector, it’s under the flags:
Share bookmarks from within the bookmark manager
        opera://flags/#bookmarks-sharing

        • http://www.facebook.com/hector.maciasayala Hector Macias Ayala

          Thanks.

        • senna_4ever

what that bookmarks sharing does really?

          • L33t4opera

          • Vux777

            thanx for explaining that flag
            but I don’t get that feature…
sharing bookmarks folderers on line ?!? wtf ๏̯͡๏
I know new bookmarks have some “traveling” etc folders (social/hipster bs)…but still
            what’s the point of it?
there are so many sharing solutions on line (buttons, links, bla bla…) and now bookmarks? :/

          • http://ruario.ghost.io/ Ruarí Ødegaard

The feature is still work in progress, under investigation and behind a flag. This means it may change drastically or may never appear.

That said, to answer your specific question about why people would want to share some of their bookmarks. I can think of hundreds of examples. Here is one:

Suppose my wife and I are going on a trip and I start investigating hotels. I might bookmark some of the options and later decide to share that collection with my wife for her to look through.

If there is value in sharing a link, why not a collection? Indeed a collection can be more than the sum of its parts.

          • http://www.facebook.com/hector.maciasayala Hector Macias Ayala

Ever heard of Facebook, Twitter, G+? That’s what they do, among other things.

          • Vux777

I see a point in sharing collections… and it is a useful feature, but for some ppl, more advanced users probably
and linking that feature with bookmarks is wrong, imho
            bookmarks should stay private
even tho they are most convenient for that kind of functionality (collect some links and share them), I doubt you’ll get many users actually using it
Many of them are still repulsed by the idea to sync bookmarks, because evil G or whatever will spy on them. Seeing sharing option on bookmarks folder (or wherever) will just annoy them more, unless they really really need it (job, research etc). You won’t tech them better. They are spoiled brats ツ

          • http://ruario.ghost.io/ Ruarí Ødegaard

Nobody has to share anything. You choose to or choose not to, so I don’t really see it as a problem.

          • Nekomajin43

I think Vux is right. There is a not-that-small group of users who will link this feature to Google via the engine. It is a good feature, I like it, and I will probably use it, but you have to explain it to the public.

          • kokolo5

It’s funny about the fact that you experiment with sharing links, because i thought about a build-in messenger in Opera. That would be a unique feature.

Imagine I am browsing and send something immediately to my friend. Also it would be very useful when i’m on the road with my mobile and can talk during browsing.

I know there many solutions in the world, but they all separated.
            But a very good messenger solution in a browser could be very interesting with marketing and a few special tricks. Also very good for a community (;

          • Leonardo Gomes

Opera had an ICQ “client” in the past. The problem was that were lots of changes on the protocol, on the servers, and the icq client stopped working lots of times until a new version of Opera was released.

  • Andrea G. Còntini

This is GREAT! 🙂 Not only bookmarks, but a left panel as well!

Thank you guys! Thank you a lot!

now, if only I could find a way to modify javascript to enable right clicks…

    • ma_t14

      Left panel? Where?

      • http://www.facebook.com/hector.maciasayala Hector Macias Ayala

        Yeah right.

      • al_ghul

he means probably the left bar with options in bookmarks manager;P

  • oCircuit

Now we need a smooth transition to “Bookmarks”, like into “Stash” and “Discover”.
Will this be possible or will it stay an abrupt transition with a new tab like in Chrome ?

The rest looks and feels good (:

  • A. R.

Bring back other functionality to heart menu too! Why now removed?? After all you took several builds and releases to polish the heart button into a nice menu, all that work down the drain… It’s not a heart menu anymore it’s a button. Why so much time wasted on it?

    • Muhammad Ubaid Raza

Its a work in progress. 🙂

    • Frits died last year

I agree, the stash feature was not bad …. in fact it was awesome if you understand it. I loved it so far so Opera better not destroy something else for a other.

  • escruting

This is great, but hoping some things:
    – Being able to see the folder hierarchy on the left side of the bookmarks manager, not just the main folders, every folder of the current one you are navigating.
    – Integration with the new start page and being able to switch rapidly from speed dial to bookmarks manager just like we can right now between speed dial and discover
    – Being able to select multiple bookmarks and to use the shift, control and delete from the keyboard to better manage everything.
    – Bookmarks menu button next to the refresh and speed dial buttons on the main browser bar.

    • escruting

Also, the scrollbar on the bookmarks manager could be a bit bigger or just leave the native one of the OS (the same we see while browsing, not the google styled version).

It is like this on the version we have right now on the Opera Next (Beta) version and you changed it on this version. Could we return to the native one please?

  • Sidney Moraes

I can’t add speed dial with the heart button anymore.

Sync still doesn’t connect (since O25). I know, it experimental, but syncing the speed dials for me it’s already ok.

  • Sidney Guioy

Sync look broken on this build, i got a

    Waiting for server response.”

    #sync-uses-test-servers = false
    #synch=true

      Same here (O25; Win 8.1 64)

Synchronization is broken for me since build 25. Win 7 64bit
Sync enabled in flags, test servers disabled.

  • escruting

Bug: unable to move bookmarks anymore until browser restart
    steps to reproduce:
1 – go to bookmarks manager and open a folder where you have a lot of bookmarked pages, i did this with the unsorted bookmarks
2- grab a bookmark with the mouse and move it around trigging the other bookmarks to move.
3 – move the bookmark for 10-15 seconds and it will stop and return to the original position before grabbing it.
4 – Now you can grab the bookmark but the other bookmarks will not move so you cant move the bookmarks inside this folder or to any other folder.
5 – Restart Opera and it will go away until you do the same.

    Win7 x64 SP1.

    • escruting

      anyone?

yes, confirmed. USB install Win7 x64. It also affects the other folders, you can grab a thumbnail but the others don’t move.

    • reesmichael1

Nothing interesting, as far as I can tell 😉 I don’t see any groundbreaking changes to it in the changelog. Can you share more information?

    • LoverOfLife

      Ctrl+O i see it works

    • Leonardo Gomes

No comments about any intention of changing it that i can remember and also i don’t think they have it on top priority.
So i guess there won’t be any changes on a near future. But things can always change.

  • Golin

Congratulations ASA Software for FINALLY listening to your users about bookmarks, indeed, there are room for improvement, the best ones you could make is let the bookmarks be EXACTLY like the one from Opera 12, just see this http://i.imgur.com/xZWSy3v.gif i put the boomark star in the right side of Opera’s icon to quickly display a list with all the bookmarks, i NEVER liked the lateral display of bookmarks that takes a part of the screen for it, make the bookmarks EXACTLY like on old opera and bring the LOVELY irc client back and you’ll get me back as an user of Opera and i’m sure others will come too.

    • Inquisitor

Yes, O12 Bookmarks feature is absolutely perfect. Simple, fast and so easy to use with its right click menu. Nowadays, unfortunately, touch screens and tablets get priority over old fashioned keyboard and mouse, so a modern browser is supposed to be all about tiles and swiping and lots of eye candy. Nice for mobile devices, I wonder if that’s a good thing for desktop users. Even Microsoft is getting doubts…

  • LoverOfLife

    1. Not responding when adding a dial to (old) start page
    2. The black colour (left bar, dials) in new start page, can be changed in optional new one? Or can be transparent?

A key sequence to show BM’s, now we’re talking Opera!!

  • Dark Magician

Controls on YT in HTML5 player are corrupted/invisble.

  • Hookah1388 .

Like the last update, Opera tells us it blocks content on pages with the option to unblock it. Places like Google and Tumblr make this happen, it’s unnecessary. It’s not just each session, but every time you close the tab and go back to the site it asks again. It’s a problem because it doesn’t even ask immediately, but until you get to a link or content that it blocks. I understand it does this for secure servers, but PLEASE give us the option to unblock it PERMANENTLY for each individual page. Annoying. Please fix. Thanks.

    • http://www.facebook.com/hector.maciasayala Hector Macias Ayala

I was getting these warnings yesterday with previous build, but I think it was related to AdGuard extension, not to Opera itself. Can´t see a reason why Opera would me such mistake.

      • Hookah1388 .

        Definitely Opera browser.

    • https://christoph142.wordpress.com/ Christoph142

      • Hookah1388 .

        Thank you!!!! Um, how? 🙂

      • Hookah1388 .

        Nevermind, found it. 🙂

  • Lacedaemon

New Bookmarks is an extension*. M2+ Mail Client as an extension as well? Left Bar has still a lot of space.

Pro-tip: Design, Code & Layout from “myopera” for fastness.

    * Takes a little time to load, which is annoying. I would prefer being developed as Stash

    • Leonardo Gomes

Bookmark’s page/manager loads kinda fast here.

      • Lacedaemon

exactly, “kinda” 🙂 It is that split second of blankness that destroys it.

        • Leonardo Gomes

which “blankness”? The pages shows up immediately.

          • Lacedaemon

“Immediately” like a webpage, (it is coded as an extension after all that has to be loaded), not “immediately” like in Opera Presto.

          • Leonardo Gomes

            Well, it’s instant here.

The bookmarks are good to see, even if currently it’s a bit more awkward than it should be to add a new one. Now if you can just add sync to bookmarks, that would be terrific.

    • https://christoph142.wordpress.com/ Christoph142

Have a look at DNA-24555 in this build’s changelog 😉

  • taneli

I still got the same problem with youtube and embedded videos as with the last 25 build.
    – Be logged in on youtube
    – Be on a page that has an embedded video
    – Click on the “Youtube”-button to go to that video’s youtube page
    – It doesn’t recognize that i should be logged in, so doesn’t have my preferences.
    – Refresh needed to fix

Or is this problem on youtube’s side? It just seemed to appear when i updated to 25 so…

    • taneli

No-one else having this? I did trie with extensions off and unticking “don’t allow 3rd party cookies” etc. etc.

    • Leonardo Gomes

I don’t have that problem here, the video opens on YT page and i can see that i’m still logged in.

Do you allow all cookies or do you have a whitelist?

      • taneli

Whitelist, normally, but i tried it by allowing all, still the same.

        • Leonardo Gomes

Do you use any extensions? If so, try with them disabled.

          • taneli

Yes, always tried after disabling all extensions, setting some settings to vanilla (cookies etc.), refreshing the page with embedded video, and then trying.
Can’t think of anything else, if it’s not Opera doing it.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Have you tried with a new clean profile?

  • patkoscsaba

I just discovered the experimental start page. It looks nice. Bigger thumbnail boxes would be nice though.

  • senna_4ever

i am very happy, finally the bookmarks!!! good one opera!
But it’s a bit confuse for me, and if I wanna remove the bookmark I added? I don’t see a button for it on the heart menu.

A curiosity: I dont see the stash menu, did u use the stash to build the bookmark manager?

    • Leonardo Gomes

Go to the folder where the bookmark is, put the mouse over the bookmark and click on the X icon.

Stash is gone. Stash is now bookmarks.

      • senna_4ever

Hmmm, good move from Opera, but I think: and that thing of “save full content” that stash had? Will there be this in new bookmarks or it’s gone too?

      • L33t4opera

Stash is gone. Stash is now bookmarks.

Hi Leonardo, ‘…to bring back the Stash feature, you need to disable the “opera://flags/#bookmarks” flag…’ read more.

        • Leonardo Gomes

Yes, but i think this flag will be removed in the future when they consider bookmarks stable enough for this.

          • L33t4opera

I see, but at the same point I hope, that they will not remove it completely, but they leave the users the ability to choice, letting them determine, which features they want to use, and how many of them at the same time. It seems pretty clear, that there are many different people, having different personalities, their own points of views, and a unique way of perceiving the world, etc. Every person is in some way different, has a bit, or quite different selection criteria under various circumstances. Regardless of which product to use, you always like to have a choice, some of us are happy, when they use one function, while others instead of that, prefer to use another function, or both at the same time 😉

    • L33t4opera

Alternatively, you can go to the O-Menu>Bookmarks, then right-click on the name of the bookmark, and select “Delete”, or if the page is already open, you can simply right-click anywhere on an empty space on the page, and select “Remove From Bookmarks” from the context menu.

  • kapsi

I hope Stash isn’t going away, I like it.

    • Alex

So do I… Just changed to Bookmarks Page and I miss Stash.

  • Deus Ex Vino

Now we talk business – ad eMail back in and i can finally migrate from Opera 12. I actually like new bookmarks – really slick and smooth thing.

  • senna_4ever

I saw there is a list view for bookmarks, like the stash there was. Will there be a roll bar too in this mode to show a thumbnail page ?

i see the bookmarks have two buttons on top, at left that is a “V”, when I click on it, this doesn’t allow me to delete the bookmark. I tested with a entry from bookmark bar. I couldn’t delete it from bookmark manager menu but from the bookmark bar I got it.

    • Leonardo Gomes

I saw there is a list view for bookmarks, like the stash there was. Will there be a roll bar too in this mode to show a thumbnail page ?

Bookmark’s page already show thumbnails by default.

I couldn’t delete it from bookmark manager menu but from the bookmark bar I got it.

No problems here to delete a bookmark using the bookmark menu.

      • senna_4ever

about the first thing, i asked because in stash had a rollbar where u could raise or reduce the thumbnail size. And how the stash was in a “list view”, I thought if Odevs would add an rollbar for this to the list view of bookmarks manager

  • Guest703

Offtopic: @webadmins – why are there no dates on the articles on http://www.opera.com/blogs/desktop/ ? It makes it a lot easier to see if an article is new or old if there’s a small date/time at the top of each article. Please consider.

  • senna_4ever

I dunno why, but it’s crashing my opera dev every time 🙁
I use it and in some minutes… another crash and restart

an idea: in O menu I whould think more organized if the bookmarks menus were together with speed dial and discover menu, like this was when it was the stash.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Any extension being used? Have you tried with a clean profile?

      • senna_4ever

my problem was resolved when I renamed the stash file.

  • HellBrick

Though I can understand the joy of the people who were waiting for the bookmarks, I see the huge problem with this build: I can no longer add current page to the speed dial via the heart menu! As a matter of fact, I spent an inexcusable amount of time figuring out how to do it now. My next impulse what to right-click the current tab, but the only relevant item there was ‘Save tabs as Speed dial folder’, which is obviously not what I wanted. And only after that I tried to right-click the contents of the tab to discover ‘Add to the Speed dial’ item there.

Sorry to rain on the parade, but it’s a gigantic UX setback for the Speed dial usage. Even if there is a keyboard shortcut to add the current tab to the SD (by the way, is there one?), the lack of clear mouse-based way to do it seems like a big problem.

    • Rodders

The heart symbol now clearly relates to bookmarks alone. You add pages to SD via the ‘add a site’ icon in the SD window. Or right click somwhere on the desired page and select menu item ‘add to speed dial’. Not difficult for me.

      • HellBrick

There are two problems with this approach:

        1. In order to leave the current tab to the SD you have to leave the current tab. That’s not very convenient.

        2. It seems there’s no fixed place for the tab you’ve just seen on the SD suggestion list, so it take some more time to find it.

So I don’t see how that’s an improvement over right-clicking the tab content.

        • Rodders

As I say above you CAN right-click somewhere on the page content and save direct to SD. At least I can.

    • Vux777

Currently, there are two versions of speed dial
if you disable bookmarks and experimental new tab page ( I think) you will have classic way of adding SD and stash
I still have it (this build)
      http://prntscr.com/4cvcoi

  • Inquisitor

Still problems with the fonts. No idea if it’s caused by HiDPI or what, but look at his example: On the left: O25, on the right: O24 – same font, same font size, same zoom level, both DirectWrite enabled.

    • https://christoph142.wordpress.com/ Christoph142

I’m almost sure that I told you already that it’s gonna be fixed soon…
No need to repeat it on every post.

      • Inquisitor

Thanks. I must have overlooked your reply to my earlier complaint.

  • ayespy

I don’t know how you did it, but you did it. My confidential data sources one again (properly) require me to sign in on restart if I have left one of their pages open BUT – and here’s the best part – when I do log in, it doesn’t take me to the home page, but to the last page I had open on the site. That’s cool! Tks.

  • http://icewalker2g.wordpress.com Francis Adu-Gyamfi

No one here seems to have commented about the change to the Speed Dial. The experimental one though. Looks quite nice. I know it isn’t finished but I’m loving the direction it is going.

    • http://www.facebook.com/hector.maciasayala Hector Macias Ayala

It was througrougly commented in previos builds, but in this one, BM’s are the star of the show.

It’s Gigya Socialize in Ghostery, that is blocked. If you unblock this you can see the content of the page.

      • http://www.facebook.com/hector.maciasayala Hector Macias Ayala

Yep, that worked, but it is still strange that Firefox can show the content, even with that widget blocked, at least in my work (something I just verified right after unblocking it in Opera).

I’m glad I it worked anyway, thank you.

I’m going to report it right away to them, since it is a beta of the site and next week is the official launch.

        • Ralf Brinkmann

No, then you have configured Ghostery in a different way in the two browsers. I have tried it out in Opera, Google Chrome and Firefox, always with the same settings. The page looks always empty like in your screenshot in all browsers, if I block Gigya Socialize.

          • http://www.facebook.com/hector.maciasayala Hector Macias Ayala

At least in my work it’s not the case

    • Alacran

Works just fine, you have blocked something or it is an extension issue.

  • thebluefootednewt

Why bookmarks page’s design is so differs from Extensions, Settings, About Opera pages, etc.? Why no unified design for those pages?

    • taneli

Settings, extensions, about, etc. don’t have user-added content, they’re static internal pages with not too much of content.
SD and BookMarks pages on the other hand, have more user-added content, so smaller space for the bar, more space for the user’s content, i do think they should unify the new Startpage a bit more with the Bookmarks page, make it open in the same tab for starters like Stash and Discover did, just make it feel fluid when changing to the bigger sidebar.

    • http://www.tbochenek.de thorbenb

Maybe it’s the other pages that should change? 😉

  • Alacran

Saved passwords are not auto filled in on some webpages, also on these webpages the “save password dialog” is not triggered.
    Bug reported: DNA-25019.
This was working before 24 developer, but broken from 24 developer and onwards.

    Cheers.

  • Adoxographist

In the new start page. Putting the speed dial, discover in the middle would be nice. Opacity for google search bar as well.
Adding transition effect for moving from start page to bookmarks page would make it less jarring.

  • Deus Ex Vino

When will it be possible to add bookmark button to some more convenient place on UI?

Also – pleeeease add “open all links in folder” to bookmarks – i really need it for my web-comics addiction.

I would like to 32 bit linux version because my laptop does not support the 62 bit.

If somebody like the same, please vote up this comment. 🙂

    • http://ruario.ghost.io/ Ruarí Ødegaard

The 32-bit linux version is not a priority for us right now.

      • Guest

OK. Thank you for your answer. I will waiting for this in a subsequent version.

      • Nekomajin43

And how about 64 bit on Windows?

        • http://ruario.ghost.io/ Ruarí Ødegaard

I don’t know. I do not follow the Window’s teams investigations and decisions on this topic.

In the Mac team (I work with both Linux and Mac) we have produced internal 64-bit builds and I suspect we probably will make the switch one day but no plans to do so in the short to medium term.

P.S. Linux 32-bits have not been regularly built internally for some time, so some work would need to be done to bring 32-Bit builds back.

          • Nekomajin43

What are the main issues with the 64 bit builds? I mean, are there serious bugs in it, or you just don’t think it’s important?

          • http://ruario.ghost.io/ Ruarí Ødegaard

            Not important right now.

          • anonym

actually a shame. like all those isp’s trying to avoid ipv6.

        • Lacedaemon

That’s a good question since Chrom(e)ium encourages people to use 64-bit since June.

      • P0lip

I’d like to submit a bug (probably) which occurs in Opera’s developer tools. When I try to expand the tree of object’s proto or when I get run function etc, I get some glitches – you can see in the screenshot. I’m under Fedora 20 with KDE, the newest build of 25.

        • P0lip

          2nd attachment.
Each 3 screenshots are the same. Have no idea why it has posted it 3 times. Hope it helps

    • http://www.facebook.com/hector.maciasayala Hector Macias Ayala

You got an old PC, I don’t think it runs Opera anyway, and by the time Opera decides to go 32 bit on Linux it won’t make a difference.

BTW, Opera is 32 bit on Windows, and it is not a lightweight program at all.

  • DamonLinuxPoland

    From changelog:

DNA-24515 [Linux] Create RPM packages WP1″
    So… What this mean? 🙂

    • Leonardo Gomes

That they have started working on rpm packages for the Linux version, i think.

      • http://ruario.ghost.io/ Ruarí Ødegaard

Yes we have done some work in this regard. However, before anyone gets their hopes up, please don’t expect to see them soon. We are still debating what to do with regards to an rpm repository and what Distros we want to be our focus at this stage. Until we decide on these things we are unlikely to offer rpm builds publicly.

In the mean time this page will help you if you do want to try Opera on a non-Debian based distro: https://gist.github.com/ruario/99522c94838d0680633c

  • jeti

What do you thing about if there would be a speedial folder in the bookmarks with the contant of the speed dials? (Of couse the speedial folder would be undeletable.)

    • Herr Pietrus

No, let;s don’t move everything into bookmarks manager now, only because it’s going to be so cool 🙂

      • https://christoph142.wordpress.com/ Christoph142

        I think you misunderstood jeti.
Having them in bookmarks structure doesn’t make them disappear in speed dial. It would just be another view for the same thing.
That actually is what I expected from Stash. Having them as a “Stash”-folder somewhere in bookmarks hierarchy and also being able to view them like we used to.

        • jeti

Yes, exactly. I mean it would be just an other view and the speed dial would work in the same manner like now but it would be easier to handle (import, export, share and synchronized).

        • Herr Pietrus

I understand him quite well 🙂 But In effect, there will be total mess in bookmarks folders soon. Double this, double that… Ok, I understand that possibility to manage SD elements via manager can be attractive for some people, but we can add, remove and organize SD sites directly by SD page. That’s why additional folder in BOOKMARKS manager is in my humble opinion unneeded.:)

          • https://christoph142.wordpress.com/ Christoph142

            It’s not doubled.
It’s not like you have a stack of cards and you’re copying them so you have them as normal ones and on Din A 4 paper and then you’re trying to keep them in sync, but it’s more like you have a can.
Bookmarks will show you a rectangle (looking from the side) and Speed dial will be a circle (looking from the top). No matter what you do with that can, it’s gonna be reflected in both views cause it’s one and the same thing. Nothing to keep in sync here.
And if you only need Speed dial (the rectangle) you will never be confronted with the circle at all so no confusion and mess 😉

… and only think about the fact that there’s a bookmark API for extensions…

          • http://www.lalaurette.com.ar/ Sebastián Lalaurette

I thought Speed Dial was the circle… 😉

          • https://christoph142.wordpress.com/ Christoph142

            Damn it ^^

          • al_ghul

so maybe not folders but some tags-folder (etiquettes) which resolve doubling problem?

        • duhduhduh0

Hurray! Stash is here to say then.

          • https://christoph142.wordpress.com/ Christoph142

I said I wanted it to work that way. I’m not an Opera dev.
Unfortunately it doesn’t look like they were actually doing it this way…

    • http://www.tbochenek.de thorbenb

IMHO that makes a lot of sense and it will probably come eventually. But things are not as easy as you thing: Speed Dial is a tree structure with maximum depth of one. Meaning there are only folders, no subfolders. So copying and moving between the two involves changing subtree structures somehow. Try to communicate that nicely in a UI.

This time nothing new and important, nothing expected by many users… No bookmarks menu on toolbar, no chance to easy add subfolders in bookmark manager, no improvements in heart menu, no separate button for unsorted bookmakrs, no thumbanils on new speedial page…
We have to wait. I hope we will see all this things soon. 🙂

Maybe I miss something but there is no Opera Turbo option after Ubuntu’s Global Menu implemention. [Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS (x86_64; Unity)]

We know about the issue and are fixing it 😛

  • rufu2

    Thanks for the update!

Can you tell me when there will be a way to import bookmarks to an USB installation? The bookmark-importer seems to be gone, and it only worked on “normal” installations anyway.

  • rufu2

Opera is getting better, thank you!
The top 3 things for me that are still missing:

    – side panel for
    — bookmarks,
    — windows/tab panel,
    — downloads list,
    — extension use (RSS… Mail?!)
    — etc

    – customizable default searches (or just make the built-in list larger…)

    – allow different proxy than the system default

  • N Tun

Bookmark Names in List view are not properly displayed in Linux version.

    • http://www.tbochenek.de thorbenb

We know about the issue and are fixing it right now. It is not related to the OS.

Menu missing on Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS (using GNOME)

    • http://ruario.ghost.io/ Ruarí Ødegaard

The plan was to use a native Unity menu where available.

I see you mention your are Gnome. Is that Gnome fallback mode? Also which version (exactly) of Gnome.

Also what does Opera think you are running. You can check this by looking in opera://about and checking what it says under “System”.

      • https://vivaldi.net/unity/profile/chas4/6-blog Chas4

I attached a screenshot (in the comment you replied to), it thinks I am on Unity (I have both Unity & Gnome I can open to)

I mainly use GNOME Flashback (Metacity) (choice on the log in screen)

GNOME 3.10.4-0ubuntu5.2 (gnome-shell version listed in package manager)

  • God

Nice and beauty. But for me “Stash” was better, because is much simplier and easy to use. And how to delete bookmark using heart button?

  • raphah

    finally a bookmarks manager!

  • ayespy

I’m daring to imagine that someone might introduce a mail extension.

  • Freon

O menu is missing in Ubuntu 14.04 This is actually since the previous version.

    • https://christoph142.wordpress.com/ Christoph142

This is probably intentional. Opera will use native frame on Unity.

    • http://ruario.ghost.io/ Ruarí Ødegaard

Yes we use a native Unity menu where available. However I have seen some reports where we remove the O menu when Unity isn’t actually being used as the Desktop Environment. If this is the case for you perhaps you could say what Desktop Environment you run and which one Opera thinks you are running. You can check this by looking in opera://about and checking what it says under “System”.

      • Hrc

put a red O menu in the rightmost part of the toolbar as it is for most of browsers and also for Opera mobile and all problems with the actual floating menu will be gone and it also looks nicer imo.

        • http://ruario.ghost.io/ Ruarí Ødegaard

The Unity menu is accessible via HUD, which is a nice benefit

      • Freon

Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS (x86_64; Unity) . And I am definitely using Unity.

        • http://ruario.ghost.io/ Ruarí Ødegaard

In that case it is supposed to be missing. You now have an integrated Unity menu with all the same entries.

      • http://www.facebook.com/hector.maciasayala Hector Macias Ayala

Haven´t tried but AKAIK Ubuntu allows to disable global menus, I think it is done trought the Compiz Config Manager, so If I disable global menus what do i get instead? O Menu o classic menu?

  • Hrc

That Opera menu keeps getting bigger and bigger. I think it’s already too big. Please redesign it and make it lighter.

  • Vykintas

The bookmarks from the Google Chrome’s bookmarks manager, when synced by the Xmarks extension from Chrome Web Store, ended up in the “Imported bookmarks” folder. Items from the bookmarks toolbar are synced well. This probably means that the bookmarks structure is different than in Chrome. Is that intended?

    • oic

when I try to use chrome’s bookmark sentry extension, it causes opera to crash

    • https://christoph142.wordpress.com/ Christoph142

as DNA-24555 hints, structure is different, yes.

  • miles82

Tab previews have stopped working completely for me. Not sure when, I believe they didn’t work in the previous build as well (I’m on Win7 btw). They don’t show at all, only the title tooltip appears. Tried disabling/enabling/restarting, didn’t help. Any ideas?

    • Leonardo Gomes

Do you have your OS set to use hidpi? If so, you may need to change this flag: opera://flags/#enable-tab-preview-in-hidpi-mode

      • miles82

Well, I’ll be damned, that worked, the previews are back! I didn’t mess with any Opera or OS settings and it worked before… I found now that they said in 24.0.1558.21 release notes “In this version, we decided to disable previews in HiDPI mode.”. Why my 6 year old laptop runs in HiDPI mode is beyond me though 😀

  • David Bertalan

I like the Bookmark idea but I already miss the option of adding sites to the Speed Dial directly with the heart button. 😛

    • oic

opera:flags search heart menu and select disable. It appears opera remove the ability to add-remove speedial via heart icon

      • Lacedaemon

If he does that though, the heart icon saves to Stash and not to Bookmarks.

    • L33t4opera

Hi David, you can simply press “Ctrl+B”, if you use Opera on Windows, or Linux, or press “Command+B”, in case that you are on Mac 😉

  • Rodders

What’s going on with my unsorted bookmarks (the block coloured bars)…?

        • Rodders

PS it took virtually a whole day to successfully download the new build (after dozens of attempts), so I’m a bit behind the times.

    Is anybody use the Discover?
(I do not understand why is it good.)

    • Rodders

No, but if they incorporated user RSS feeds into it as well…I might!

    • Herr Pietrus

      I do sometimes.
All this news portals for dumbs don’t deserve wasting time for visiting them. Discover let’s me to check really quickly whether Vlad invades Ukraine officially or not…

      • Rodders

I suspect NATO relies on Discover for that information as well. 😉

    • rafaeljvieira

I use Discover *every day*, as my news feed (instead of using an online portal, for example). It probably could be improved by adding RSS feeds, although I couldn’t care less about RSS, though.

  • http://www.PlanetDaniel.net Daniel

Thank you for making and adding the new bookmarks manager again!

  • Gloriam

Question about the new experimental speeddial, the website icons change to the website’s logo, I rather disliked that ever since it was first featured in.. opera 12 or earlier? But I always had the option to turn it off, I can’t find such a option at the moment, could you add it?
I want to view the website, not it’s logo in the speeddial.
Rest of the speeddial is awesome, works exactly like I want it to except for that small detail!

    • Herr Pietrus

I hope that they will give us a choice between text label, logo and website thumbnail.

  • SiMcarD

This is very good but….only one question: But if I wanted to move the speed dial’s entries in the bookmark menu???!

    • L33t4opera

Hi, you can drag the bookmarks from the SD (not the folders) and drop them on the Bookmarks Bar (this will copy them, and not move them) – after that, you can see them in the O-Menu>Bookmarks, and in the BM as well), and vice versa – you can also drag the bookmarks from the BB, and drop them on the SD page.

      • SiMcarD

Ok thank you. I have to do it for about 300 times….. :-/

  • disinvis

Domains with characters not on Latin previews look terrible.

Background color has nothing to do with the color of the original logo.

P.S. Add the opening group of tabs (folder) on SpeedDial by clicking the middle mouse button.

Thanks for reporting. It’s a known issue and being worked on already.

How can I print a page and include the background colour(s) and image(s)?

  • Radik Gradenko

Guys, on top of my earlier report about numerous enhancements I’d really appreciate in Opera, I’d like to add that opening the Opera menu upon pressing Alt+D twice is a PITA. I know Alt is supposed to open the Opera menu, but DON’T do that when pressing a key combo, please!

Imagine this scenario: you wanna paste a link, so you press Alt+D to get to the URL bar, you press Ctrl+C, press Alt+Tab, you Ctrl+V, then do some other stuff. Then you want to paste that link again (after overwriting the clipboard with something else already), but you wanna make sure the URL bar is indeed active, you when switching back to Opera you press Alt+D again and bam, it opens the Opera menu. It’s really frustrating and it happens to me all the time.

I think you might as well check it out in IE to see what I’m talking about. I can press Alt+D countless times, it’ll do nothing but keep the URL bar selected. Only if I press Alt by itself, will it open the menu bar. Please fix this.

Furthermore, you absolutely need to fix the inconsistent handling of key presses. For example, I’ve just realized while writing this comment that Alt is ignored in the Disqus comment box, but Alt+D and Alt+Left isn’t. But it happens in a ton of other places/sites. Sometimes I can use Alt+Left to go back in history, sometimes I can’t, etc. It’s really random, please fix it.

    • https://christoph142.wordpress.com/ Christoph142

Not seeing this issue over here.
Menu opens when releasing the Alt key only when I didn’t press another one. Alt+D only selects address field over here.

      Win 8.1

      • Radik Gradenko

Like I said, you have to do it *twice*.

        • https://christoph142.wordpress.com/ Christoph142

          I did it countless times…
          not happening

          What’s your OS?

          • Radik Gradenko

Strange, I can reproduce it on any comp. 8.1 x64.

          • L33t4opera

Hi, I have two tips for you, regarding the “Alt+D” problem – of course, if you don’t mind:
            1. You can try to use another, default keybindings for this feature: “Ctrl+L”, “Ctrl+E”, or “F8”,
            2. You can also rebind the keybindings, as follows:{
            "Keybindings": {
            "Basic": {
            "FocusAddressbar": [ "Ctrl+L", "Ctrl+E", "F8" ]
            },
            "Settings": {
            "AdvancedEnabled": true
            }
            },

After that, you can choose between one of the three keybindings, which I mentioned above.

          • rufu2

Yes, I can reproduce that behaviour.
If I press Alt and keep holding it and then press D, it just focuses the address, and if I do that again, nothing else happens. If I do it at normal speed, then on first try it focusses the URL, and if I repeat Alt-D at the same speed, with the URL still selected, it opens the menu. Maybe there is a inconsistency there, depending whether the URL is highlighted or not.
Edit: Yeah, Alt-D also changes behavior when you highlight the URL by clicking in the address field.

  • taneli

Trying out the 25 dev on my moms old’ish laptop, upon starting the SD isn’t showing for about 3 minutes, then the whole browser window goes to black for a few minutes, after a while it goes to normal and SD shows up.
Also going to a webpage, the browser window goes fully black for 1-2 minutes before it opens the page.

    about bookmarks:
    1. multi select [ok] -> drag’n’drop multiple items [not working] (only 1 item is movable) -> why there is multiselect if I can’t delete or move all the selected items at the same time
    2. heart menu click = add to bookmarks -> no way to remove it from the same heart menu -> I have to click all bookmarks and remove it
    3. heart menu selectable previews -> cool stuff BUT I want to have this functionality in bookmarks NOT ONLY in heart menu. I want the textual preview with the name of my bookmark NOT the domain. if I have 10 bookmarks from the same site. they all look the same (have the same text on the “preview”)
    4. heart menu doesn’t show that the page is already bookmarked in any of the folder or bookmark bar -> it just adds that page again to unsorted bookmarks

p.s. thanks for fixing doubled favicons on bookmark-bar for bookmarks without caption (just icon, with empty name) – previous build doubled the icon with an offset. looked like this ()) instead of ()

    • al_ghul

it’d be good if heart menu would work like in ff, or like in presto opera. but i think they’ll do this soon:)

Add the sufix –enable-smooth-scrolling to your Opera shortcut, make sure it adds/keeps the quotes, like:

    “C:UsersYOUAppDataLocalProgramsOperalauncher.exe” –enable-smooth-scrolling

Opera devs kept claiming it wasn’t supported, either Chrome lied or Opera lied, but it works, not unstable, not incomplete, but fully functional.

Works in all the three branches.

I would’ve loved a sidebar, with that lovely tiny border I used to click to make it appear, even if it’s not the default option.

What about Opera Link? Since Opera moved to Chromium, a lot of old Opera features do not work Properly o new Opera.

I would like to sync Opera 25 with my Opera Link account.

This is a Developer build man, use the Stable build if you dont like having to deal with little problems appearing like this.

Its like asking the chef to let you taste the food before it hasnt even finished being cooked and being angry with the chef because it doesnt taste as you were expecting…

      • http://colector.ucoz.com/ Teodor Cristian Trusca

If the the customers do not complain how it is that the chef knows to make it right or better ????
And I use all the version of Operas to know what they make and change….

        • escruting

Well, they could wait until the food is atleast halfway cooked before starting to complain. In this particular case the customer is complaining that the food is bad and that its not worth to continue cooking that same recipe.

And also the customer is complaining and he is not even a customer, because the chef is just experimenting and developing the menu for the next day when the restaurant actually opens to the public.

I have found a bug with Discover in vers 25 and it disturb me. The two switches left and right side as “categories and option” fall out by reload the page. I reload the page since at browser’s start Discover start not and views a blank side.

In spite of several configuration attempts of my machine and presently use the optimum configuration browser start with new launch of my machine in a glimpse of black band on the top of startpage.

Hint: Discover might have RSS Reader, this would be very practical.

Bookmarks Tool Question: Will be next implanted an import and export option for bookmarks in Html to store it on my desktop? The import option from IE to Opera Bookamrk Tool is to little as opportunity for practice usage and it function is mostly only one time from new browser installation in case of delete leftover files in user tree in explorer before. I’m appreciate it Opera Team give me to this question an answer if possible.

Can you give me any tips for giving you guys more information about the mysterious Opera windows focus bug? I just experienced it and was checking things like Windows Task Manager so i could see if there’s like some memory issues or something but couldn’t find anything specific. If there’s like a program that can read some random data from windows or something that you could recommend me to try when the bug happens I could happily try.
I’ve tried pretty much everything I could think of, this is pretty damn annoying since you can’t really reproduce this..
It’s actually like the same state as when you have a slow computer, and you open a website with Opera, (From Speed Dial for example) and while it’s still loading the page !loading! not after you can see the page but while it’s still blank, try to open another application and quickly after that click on Opera again, the application you opened will stay on top of the Opera window upon focusing for a few milliseconds, the same way it behaves with this longer lasting weird bug..
But if you can recommend me any tips for giving you more info on what’s happening on my computer during that bug please tell me!

    • taneli

I’m with you there, i’m still having the same thing, but it seems rather impossible to reproduce, it’s so damn random when it happens, think i’ve been reporting this problem ever since 22 (Aura update, i think?).
Keeps happening every now and then just out of the blue, but can’t reproduce it when trying to.

    • escruting

Happened to me last night and it happens atleast once a day.

  • TheXerox

It’s a step in the right direction, but it shouldn’t take up the entire screen, that is too disruptive to my work. A simple, text based, drop down menu from the top (IE the classic File, Edit, View, etc) is much more efficient and wastes less of my time and system resources as I have over 2000 bookmarks. Don’t get me wrong, you’re making headway, but this is still unusable for me.

    • Herr Pietrus

Menu should be an add-on to manager. I mean – it should be moved from O-menu onto toolbar 🙂

      • TheXerox

Yes. While I get that some people love the O-menu, I never cared for it and did away with it with every update to Opera. As someone who is an IT professional, I can attest to the fact that having everything all lumped into a single menu is VERY confusing for end users. Instead of me being able to tell a user “Go to the Tools menu, and then…”, I have to give them a long and very drawn out set of instructions for a single menu which usually ends up in them asking me to come to their office and do it for them. This is what I don’t like about the trend of over simplifying browsers. You wouldn’t lump an entire novel into the first chapter of a book, why would you put everything into a single menu for a browser?

  • Kari Ikonen

Are you going to release some usable developer binary for Linux soon. This “.deb” package is rather useless. I.e. when you’re releasing “.rpm”, which would work in OpenSuse and such?

  • dflyra

Sexy, promising but extremely buggy. Bookmarks a mess with colors covering letters & phrases, synchronization not working or not appearing to work, problematic simultaneous tab loading. Back to next as default. By the way, I agree with others for a bookmark recycle bin.

  • Alex

Thank you for a new version!

The bookmarks page looked cool for several hours, excepting the fact that the text was being cut (see Dainis Valdmanis’s post).
Now I’m trying to open it and all I get is a blank page… Nothing loads. The Heart Menu is blank too…

And now that the bookmarks page was enabled by default, it doesn’t feel the same without Stash…

    • knoelli

I had the same problem but was able to fix it in the following way:

      Temporary fix:
Go to opera:flags and disable bookmarks. Restart Opera (Stash is back). Again go to opera:flags and re-enable bookmarks. Restart Opera yet again and bookmarks work until the next restart.

      Permanent fix:
Close Opera and delete “stash.db” and “stash.db-journal” from “c:UsersAppDataRoamingOpera SoftwareOpera Developer”-folder. (better make a backup of the files first!). This deletes the Stash database but the entries are already imported into the bookmarks database.

      • Alex

It worked 🙂 The temporary fix works until the next time I open Opera, but your permanent fix solved the problem. Thank you! Now I can truly test the bookmarks feature.

  • _artem_

please add textual preview for speed-dials. just added a page to bookmarks, set the preview to show textual domain name -> it looks just fine in bookmarks. right clicked it, add to speed dials and it shows site preview – FULL OF ADCRAPS on the preview. if you can’t allow extensions to access page while you take the screenshot for the speed-dial preview, THEN just add ability to use textual preview instead of a site screenshot. because all of my pages (that are in speed-dials) look different than on the preview BECAUSE I remove all the adcraps and all the unneeded site elements (search fields, menus, stupid side bars). so I actually don’t even know how the site looks right now (maybe it got a redesign or something) and these speed-dial previews aren’t needed at all if it can’t show the pages as I see them (modified with extensions and scripts) so it’s better then to show just textual preview instead of the screenshot.
or you just add extension support while take screenshot and an option to use textual preview or screenshot (with extension access) -> that would be perfect and you would kill 2 hares with just one shot

    • Herr Pietrus

Disappointing for real opera fans. just another chrome. Opera 12 is still far better browser (with only bad compatibility and speed). New opera has nothing for geeks

  • http://www.lalaurette.com.ar/ Sebastián Lalaurette

Well, now for a non-bookmark-related comment:

There is an annoying behaviour that I’ve been encountering for a while now (since several snapshots ago) with background tabs. I don’t know if it’s a bug or if some extension causes it, but here it is: sometimes, background tabs fail, i.e. I mid-click on a link or Alt+Enter in the address bar and I get a new empty tab which never opens any address. Since the purpose of background tabs is to be able to keep navigating while opening the link to read later, this has the very upsetting effect that most of the times I forgot what was that I was trying to open when I clicked on the link. This happens a sizable amount of the time.

Anyone else has this behaviour, or is it just me?

    • Leonardo Gomes

Do you have tab hibernation enabled? I remember a similar issue with tab hibernation enabled.

      • http://www.lalaurette.com.ar/ Sebastián Lalaurette

Indeed! I have disabled it now. Let’s see if the issue persists or if it’s solved. Thanks! And please devs, take note. 🙂

        • ahoj1234

just let me know if it works. (maybe you have some other issue)

But if I get it, I am experiencing the same (plus loading backround tabs time to time takes like 10-20seconds and sometimes even more…).
Turning off the hibernation does not solve it.

          • http://www.lalaurette.com.ar/ Sebastián Lalaurette

I had that issue when using tab previews. I disabled that.

    • Lacedaemon

I have experienced a kinda similar behavior related to background tabs. When I have like 10-15 tabs opened in the background (and have already visited them before), and I just continue browsing ignoring them for quite a while, if I return to any of them it takes 2-3 seconds until their contents are shown up. No tab-hibernation.

      • Leonardo Gomes

        Happens here also sometimes.

  • zshello3

Unable to delete folders in the bookmark manager (in fact, unable to do it anywhere AFAIK) on OS X.

  • http://www.lalaurette.com.ar/ Sebastián Lalaurette

Up until the previous snapshot, there was a shorcut to open the bookmarks manager (Ctrl+Shift+B). Before that, in my setup, the combo opened the Simple Bookmarks manager (a cool extension), but it was overtaken by the native manager. Fine, that makes sense, I thought: the shortcut is what it was in Opera Presto and what it is in other browsers, and I will be using the native thing anyway. But in this snapshot, suddenly, the Ctrl+Shift+B combo awakes the extension again. Have you disabled the keyboard shorcuts? Can I configure them somehow? Thanks. 🙂

    • L33t4opera

Hi Sebastián, you can rebind the keybinding for the BM to “Ctrl+Shift+O”, for the details, please have a look here 😉

      • http://www.lalaurette.com.ar/ Sebastián Lalaurette

Thank you! But this definitely needs to be present in the program interface. What you give there is a hack, and it’s obvioualy not a solution for most users.

  • Frits Hoekstra

First why are you removing my new feature of Opera again called the stash.
I have been using stash on both Windows and Linux on desktop, and I love the feature of stash instead leaving tabs open. I have been using stash to save memory on computers with a maximum of 3 tabs open at a time.
In the past I have used several ways of looking around websites like wiki or manuals and more. I have found stash very nice to researching various parts of website to extract information on certain subjects.

Second how can I report feedbacks of this build, The bookmark menu and manager are not working correct in this build. newer items (websites) are not showing up in the menu. when you press on the heart icon, you can’t select any of the menu’s there it is only allows default.
also the import of bookmarks does not work.

So Opera thanks for the bookmarks but replacing stash is wrong.

    • Lacedaemon

what they ‘ve created is not bookmarks, it is more a Stash revision 2. In other words, a way to sort, move and organize Stash items, When context search will be integrated it’s gonna be the same for you, relax.

  • Sebastian

I prefer the stash instead the bookmarks

  • Sebastian

what happened to the Heart Menu?

    • L33t4opera

Hi, go to the address bar, and type: opera://flags/#bookmarks, then press enter, and select “Disabled” from the dropdown list, and then restart the Opera.

      • al_ghul

it will be nice to have right click option to open highlighted text string (link-alike) in new tab/in background, just for these links/strings like Yours:) because not all are changed into clickable links in websides. I mentioned that in the past, but none put it up.

  • Lacedaemon

“Close tabs to the right” is very useful. But when you open many pages (like many articles of a site or many threads of a forum) and you want to get rid of the older ones there is no “Close tabs to the left” Any chances of adding this simple but very useful context menu item?

    • senna_4ever

      good point

  • herrschildkroete

I make me worry the still new speed dial startpage, you know it since browser vers. 15 and just a year old, with its three practical switches will in next browser version time a thing for basket been. So my word vote for this good “old” startpage. I hope the browser vers. 25 with the new startpage, how you see already in opera flag, will treated alternatively for the old one. I imagine about this three switches in the top middle place on the present startpage the switches should be made free for configuration. For example: Discover switch is changeable with bookmarks manager switch (Discover is now further reachable under Opera menu). And Stash switch will stay further more at the place it has in browser version 23. But the special is Stash list, how you can see behind today, is in the future opera version also available at the new bookmarks manager (how it is to see in experimental bookmarks manager too). How it is remarkable it gives now quasi two Stash lists. This option is thought only for the startpage as know presently (and maybe named old or alternative startpage in next browser version). The new startpage (Vers 25 higher) has Stash integrated completely in the bookmarks manager, the old startpage has both: list behind and folder in new bookmarks manager. I think the list with stash, so you see in vers. 23 Stable today and before, is beauty. You go shopping for a table and you can collect all relevant pages here in the Stash list in a very beauty comfortable wise. Or you read a special blog and you find five article (posts) you will read intensive (more as on time) so you give they to the list and the blog main page to the bookmarks manager (of course, you can give all to the manager instantly but is not so comfortable reaching the posts in your view).

So I think Discover switch disturb my concentration, always I look for information :). Hence I hope Discover switch will made changeable for the own choice at all starpages in the browser. Alternative for the Discover switch (available further ward under Opera menu) it gives a new switch for my favourite social network.

  • bwat47

Could we get a bookmarks menu button on the toolbar? Opera menu > bookmarks is too many clicks… firefox’s bookmark menu is a good example of what we should have, at least as an option.

    • herrschildkroete

Yes, the bookmarks manager star in Opera. I saw it in the address bar with Opera dev 24, but I don’t in Opera dev 25. It seems me not this is a mistake in design.

Hi, maybe, the “Tidy Bookmarks Tree“, will meet your expectations in this regard? 😉

I don’t like the dog ear in the lower right corner to switch start pages. It ruins my theme picture. 🙁

    • Nekomajin43

I think/hope it will be gone when the new start page hits stable. It’s ugly.

      • Lacedaemon

It’s kinda alarming though, the fact that they felt the urge to change the old one so fast and probably the majority there found it slicker. It shouts “browsing from tablet” to me from miles.

        • Nekomajin43

I like this design, but I was fine with the old one too. But I hope this new start page brings not just the new design but new functions too.

          • Lacedaemon

You ‘re confusing me, just above you said it’s ugly and now you like it 🙂

Some sites fonts has been display as anti-aliasing. It hurts my eyes. I don’t use in ‘clear-type’ of Windows. Notwithstanding, why Opera forced rasterizing to fonts as if anti-aliasing enabled? Yes, I tried opera://flags/#lcd-text-aa .
    Disabled=Every site completely anti-analising.
    Enabled= Only site anti-analising.

    A example site: http://goo.gl/9hqCuu

How turn off new rasterizing feature in Opera?

No problem in Firefox, previosly Opera, Chrome 31 (my main browser with Opera12, because the text selecting color isn’t ‘bright’ blue(#328efd). Therefore I can’t use often new versions of Opera and Chrome)..

regarding the chrome pdf viewer, the change of interface introduced in version 25, I think that the number of page looked better on the right side like in chrome or in version 24 than in on left side. also the icons don’t look good, lack them sharpness.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Afaik, h264 is supported only from Win7.

      • Lacedaemon

I don’t think so, they updated Vista for that some years ago with this patch http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2117917

“This update enables the playback of MP4 files, H.264 files, and AAC files by using the Source Reader component. Because of this improvement, a Windows compatible browser can handle contents that include the video tag of HTML 5 correctly.”

Besides, as I already said, Chrome plays them just fine.

        • Leonardo Gomes

I meant that Opera only supports it from Win7.

          • Lacedaemon

            Hmmm, that really sucks :-/
Do you remember any source stating that?

            @Devs? C’mon……

          • IllusionMH

Chrome !== Chromium. And h.264, mp3 etc. are parts of Chrome and not Chromium. http://www.chromium.org/audio-video

So Opera must implement own support for this formats, what they are doing at the moment.

            But Vista? C’mon 😉
I’m not sure that Vista have all necessary for current h.264 and mp3 implementation that works on Win7.

          • Lacedaemon

Thanks for that link! Very insightful. Well as I’ve said, I hope supporting it in Win7 is just the beginning. But who knows… if there are loyalties in the mix and O does not want to pay… I guess the future will show. But O -being so simple and straightforward these days- they want to compete with Chrome don’t they? I don’t know how they would gain that extra advantage when Chrome is already supporting almost every format on every system.

          • Leonardo Gomes

Nope, and i can be mistaken it. I just think i read something about that somewhere.

          • Leonardo Gomes
          • Lacedaemon

Thanks for finding that. So this brings us to the original issue… either something is not working with my Vista or it’s still work in progress from their side.

shouting: Anyone else with Vista here? 😀

  • Rob Schwyzer

Is it just a short-term thing that Stash and Bookmarks are separate, either-or entities? Personally I had zero issue using Speed Dial + Stash (actually, for my work, much better workflow). That said, I don’t much see why Stash functionality can’t be integrated into Bookmark folders, and as an aside Stash would be a heckuva lot more useful if you could have multiple Stashes (in this case, multiple Bookmark folders that use the Stash search method).

    • ayespy

It’s being said that Stash is being folded into bookmarks. There will only be bookmarks.

      • Rob Schwyzer

That’s fine, but right now searching bookmarks is like searching a folder in Speed Dial. I really hope they allow Stash-style searching of Bookmarks otherwise it’s a lot of dev effort to basically add a more organized Speed Dial which is, meh.

        • ayespy

          Yes. Proper search is critical.

  • oCircuit

Suggestion: Color the background of the bookmark tile (in list form) while keeping the text visible, if you want to make it more visual… covering most if it with a splat of paint is ridiculously bad.

Having the bookmark is a good development. However, I would like the tab stack and panel comeback too. Panel is one of the most useful feature that other features can’t provide and tab stack too.

  • Fhury

First: thanks a million for bookmarks

    My improvements would be:
    1. show folders direct in the menu, not in the sub menu
    2. include a display option like in stash

  • JWGrasli

A bug I think; when I open the Opera menu and CLICK on “Bookmarks” (no not waiting until hovering opens the menu but a fast CLICK), there’s a 1sec delay before the menu opens which is really annoying! Other menu items doesn’t have that.. 😉

    • Lacedaemon

I don’t think it’s a bug, I think it has to do with it being an extension that has to be “extra” injected. You can check it in the task manager. I find this pretty annoying as well.

      • http://www.tbochenek.de thorbenb

        > I think it has to do with it being an extension that has to be injected as an “extra”

No, the Opera menu is not an extension. But it could be slow due to the loading of your bookmarks and favicons. The menu is 100% native, we are on it.

        • Lacedaemon

Oh… my mistake, I thought he meant the ~0,5sec delay of loading bookmarks.

  • Lacedaemon

When having blocked all images in the settings, Chrome provides an option to allow images for the current page. Why can’t you just copy this behavior? I agree. Although I’m not a big fan of multi-leveled menus, the Opera Menu would be at least several rows shorter if there would be a single row displaying only icons for downloads, history, settings, themes and extensions and one row for Speed Dial and Discover.

    • Vorpal

I’ve posted my sketch here about two months ago. I think the menu have to be something like this, more structured and compact. What do you think?

      http://savepic.ru/5173925.png

      • UMaster 7

could you please add an screenshot in english?
But there seem to be too many items, though it’s got a better structure 😉

        • Vorpal

I think it is not necessary to translate this picture. I used existing menu from one of the last versions of Opera and just moved its parts in graphic editor.
Left column has Speed Dial, Stash, Downloads, Extensions and other items that opens service pages of browser as well as Help, About and Exit.
Right column has instruments to manage your browsing: New tab, New window, Recently closed, Page, Zoom, Print, Opera Turbo and others.

  • Alex

Ok, I’m late to the party, but I’ve just got to test the new bookmarks page properly. (I like the fact that we can choose the thumbnail/preview for the newly added bookmark.)

Although I know it’s still early and it’s still not fully developed, the bookmarks feature lacks several things:
    1. A right-click menu for the sidebar (being able to edit a folder’s name or delete it without clicking on My Folders first would be useful)
    2. The possibility of adding a separator between folders. (Right now I created fake folders named “====================” to separate different category of folders)
    3. Subfolders being displayed in the sidebar (even as an alternative to separators, this would be effective in visualising the folders)
    4. (speaking of making the visualising easier) The possibility to assign a colour or an image to a folder. This would be great in My Folders.
    5. The possibility to remove bookmarks from and to add to a specific folder or to Speed Dial (like it used to) directly from the Heart Menu.
    6. The ability to move a folder or an entry from Speed Dial to Bookmarks

    Suggestions/Wishes:
    1. It would be great if the transition from Speed Dial to Bookmarks would be done in the same tab.
    2. The zooming feature on the Stash page should be implemented into the list view of Bookmarks. I really miss Stash for this reason.
2′. I’m becoming picky here, but if the Unsorted Bookmarks would be renamed Stash for the sake of good (not so) ol’ times, it would be perfect…
    3. As others might have suggested: nicknames, tags, or anything in between.

    Bugs I’ve noticed:
    1. Sometimes after closing and opening Opera Dev again the Bookmaks Page and the Bookmarks Pop-up are white and nothing loads. knoelli found two solutions to this problem, but it keeps coming back.
    2. In the list view, the coloured rectangles overlap the titles of the bookmarks (already mentioned by others as well). It only happens with bookmarks transferred from Stash though.

I have a problem with rendering some of the Japanese characters on Windows 8.1 in this build: http://i.imgur.com/fTsMds3.png. You can see it for yourself here: http://www.last.fm/user/HellBrick

  • RX-3200

pages with not horizontaly center’ed content looks not_good in bookmarks preview pictures

    steps:
1 open in this build url like “file:///C:/”
    2 remember what you see
3 make bookmark to it and set “preview of page” as picture
4 go to bookmarks and look what you get in “picture”

PS: then you turn back “opera://drives/” page from Opera 12 ?
and also we need “opera://urls/” page

    • http://www.tbochenek.de thorbenb

I guess we could think about cropping screenshots from the top left. As an alternative: In such situations our fallback comes in handy. Go one image to the left and you get an image stating parts of “file:///C:/”

      • RX-3200

easy way: just add both of them (current & from the top-left)
users can choose best picture by themself

PS: what about answers to other questions ?

DNA-20341 [Windows] Rename Opera Next to Opera beta – WP1

Bye, bye, Next? Following Chrome’s naming pattern? 😛

    • Nekomajin43

      Finally.

    • Leonardo Gomes

Now it will be more clear to people that Next is Beta.

  • rufu2

Very weird: When Opera is in the background (not in focus) and loading data, it often makes some noise while loading. The noises are high beeps, sounds like morse code. They seem to come not through the speakers but maybe the PC speaker(?!) or it’s some other component that suddenly gets noisy. Win7 x64, USB install.

    • Vux777

wires from that speaker are probably close to HDD or PSU , and thus interference.
It is very common with headphones connected on front panel, and poor case isolation is making high pitched noise

      • rufu2

Thanks, that might be the origin of the noise. I don’t have headphones connected, but still.

But — why would this happen only with Opera Dev? It seems I can sometimes get a “beep” just when moving the mouse over a link. I can’t remember if the noise was already happening with Dev24 or before, but there is no noise with other browsers.

        • Vux777

I can only speak from my experience
If I boost volume on my headphones, I can hear noise sounds when scrolling page, mouse wheel, moving windows…almost all actions are making those noises… in all apps/windows

maybe you recently changed something (some systems volumes, some hardware, installed software that changed some of the settings…)
but that would make sounds with every app…
and all chromiums are very HDD demanding…they constantly read/write to HDD/SSD

          • rufu2

Since the last update to 25.0.1597.0 I have not heard a peep. Really weird. But as long as it’s quiet, I’m happy.

  • rufu2

There is still a problem with Opera not coming to the front / getting focus sometimes. I’ve not yet come up with a way to reproduce it reliably. But sometimes I have other programs open and when I want to switch to Opera I see the task is active on the Win task bar, but the window does not come to the front. So I have to minimize all the other programs one by one to get at the Opera window.

  • Lacedaemon

    @Opera and everyone else
The new bookmarks is a superior Speed Dial have you thought about this?

Who needs SD folders when on the left panel you have your folders of interest, sorted by your categories, eventually with a tree structure as well and on the right surface you got your contained links, without annoying ads, with the abilities to choose your favorite thumbnail icon, of listing and sorting them?
Maybe it’s time to unify the new startpage with the bookmarks with all those new and exciting capabilities?

    • https://christoph142.wordpress.com/ Christoph142

      >Who needs randomly placed SD folders […]?
I do. And there’s nothing random about them. Not sure how you’re using them…

      • Lacedaemon

From all the awesome things/advantages I’ve said that’s the only one you had to pick up? 🙂

Speaking of randomly placed folders I mean that you can’t beat the vertical, tidy placement of one folder under another with the way SD places them and the way you must re-arrange their position if you want to add/insert more contextual stuff as single webpages (single thumbnails) next to other. The way in bookmarks is independent of that, all the folders are listed left and their contained webpages/thumbnails to the right.

        • https://christoph142.wordpress.com/ Christoph142

Sorry. I’m evil by nature O:)

      • Vorpal

Occam’s Razor principle says says that no need to produce unnecessary entities. I told about it in some of recent blog posts but I repeat. New bookmark manager does the same as the speed dial but even better. That’s why speed dial should not to be separate of bookmark manager. It can be just a some kind of special default folder of bookmarks with pinned favorite items that opens in bookmark manager when you create new tab.

Simplicity is beauty. Now in Opera 25 we have two separate and similar parts of functionality. Favorite links here and favorite links there, folders here and folders there. Why? How to use it? Should I store this page in bookmarks folder “Opera blogs” or in speed dial folder “Opera blogs”? At least why I need to do extra click to open bookmark manager from speed dial that also have bookmarks just like an opened one click later first folder in manager?

    • rufu2

I would like a folder in bookmarks with the Speed Dial entries. If that folder were on the top of the tree (ahem) in the panel (ahem x2) on the left, then I wouldn’t mind if that view would be my startpage. I’m in favour of offering options for everything, though. So a classic SD view should still be possible.

    • Alex

I personally wouldn’t like the Bookmarks Page as startpage. I use bookmarks for keeping many links. Now that the Bookmarks are back, the Speed Dial can go back to being what it should be: well… a speed dial, meaning fewer links than bookmarks page and (hopefully) the possibility to use shortcuts to open a page. That’s the whole point of having a Speed Dial in the first place 🙂

Many things that I add to Stash/Bookmarks Page are articles to read later and videos to watch later or sites I visit only once in a while, so my startpage would be cluttered with temporary links I don’t want to see every time I open a new tab.
I use Speed Dial for sites I visit every day, e-mails, and other accounts.

The Speed Dial still looks tidier to me than the Bookmarks Page at the moment. Both could be improved further, of course, yet I would prefer to have Speed Dial.

I agree, choosing the thumbnail you like the best is a great feature and I hope it will be implemented for Speed Dial too.
As for annoying ads, I don’t know what you’re referring to. With the Coast-like thumbnails I don’t see any ads.

Couldn’t you set the startpage to Bookmarks Page from settings? (I’m genuinely asking, since I haven’t tried it.)

  • Jademarisa

The big question about bookmarks is: will they show vertically or horizontally? If they show horizontally, they will still be annoying and useless to me.

    • Leonardo Gomes

      What do you mean?

  • BillyG

You know what I’d like? How about replicate the awesome functionality that was in the old Opera UI? If you’re not going to innovate on the rendering engine, some UI innovation would be nice. Right now it’s basically a copy of Chrome and there’s not much incentive to use Opera.
    * Gestures built-in. Like Opera 12
    * The Toggle Images button, like Opera 12
    * Drag ‘n drop tab stacking, like Opera 12
    * A New Private Tab (not just Window), like Opera 12
    * You know that nice “Recently Closed” feature back in Opera 12? Yeah, put it back in as a button on top like it used to be.

  • Wraith

Sometimes I feel this is going nowhere, first you removed bookmark and later they comeback in some sort of experiment, then “Stash” which I think was a very good feature and is gone, what else come next remove speed dial ? and Full sync is not availabe yet after a few months.
Is really sad that Opera is not my main browser right now, but I do not lose hope!.

  • M T

Thanks Opera! I love Opera. Today I found “bookmarks” at last.

I am looking forward to the further evolution.

I can’t see anything in the bookmarks page. If I bookmark a page and open context menu on the page again, I can correctly unbookmark it but the bookmarks page is empty. I checked all the folders.

  • oic

could we toggle the heart icon in the address field to add and REMOVE bookmarks. In the past, we could toggle speed dials. If we have an speed dial already added, it will remove it

  • Roberto Dohnert

Unless Opera changes its route and quits following Google and starts to support plugins again like Java this is pretty much just as useless as Chrome.

  • Guest

Have a request. When I am typing url in address bar that is not in bookmarks it is appeared in google-suggestions. I am choosing it and come to google search page instead of a page of this site. Could you provide direct opening a page without going to a search site?

As I was absent here for some time, I wish to say THANK YOU SO MUCH DEVELOPERS for bookmarks!:)) it’s maybe small, BUT, imho, VERY IMPORTANT STEP to better and better browser!

  • Rebius

Where are bookmarks and why have you destroyed the perfect functioning thing I was using a lot???? Still using your old version and thinking to leave you completely, if you don’t restore the previous bookmarks (= not as add-on, extension or some other bullshit)

    • reesmichael1

      Where are bookmarks

Have you tried, you know, opera:bookmarks?

      • Rebius

What’s that for a stupid question. There are no bookmarks in the new version, unless you download it as a add on and that sucks

        • reesmichael1

The title of this post is

          A first glance at bookmarks

Yes, there are bookmarks in this build. You can access them by going to opera:bookmarks. No, their development is not done yet.

I haven’t installed any extensions. This is what I see when I type opera:bookmarks into the address bar.

      • Rebius

well are there bookmarks in the new version of opera? Don’t think so, so check your info again, troll

Hi, they should be in visible in the “Unsorted Bookmarks” on the Bookmarks Manager page (Windows/Linux: Ctrl+Shift+B), if they are not, try this solution.

  • W. Flores

    Nice! Thanks for the bookmarks.

    Two requests from me 🙂

    *Recycle bin.
    *Multiline tabs.

I’m currently using Opera 23 but it’s feeling like a step back after using 12 for so long.

  • Sebastian

according to the task manager “Bookmarks” is an extension, and as such consumes resources (11mb). think suit the browser without consuming memory?

  • Kévin Gosse

Any ETA for thumbnails *in* tabs, like in Opera 12? Is this feature even planned?

  • Luis Felipe Barreiro

Hi there. I just want to know if the bookmark menu will be associated with Opera Link.

  • Fleder

    Finally! Thanks.

But please, add 3 more things.
    – add the “closed tabs” icon again
    – add customizable shortcut keys (for tab switching too)
    – add customizable menu bars and stuff (i want my icons and menus back)

    Thanks guys!

This is good progress. It does look elegant. But I still wont use opera bookmarks until syncing is implemented. Hope to see it soon.

  • Squiggles

What the hell happened? I had all my bookmarks this morning and I come back in the evening and ALL of my bookmarks are gone! I did not delete anything…what happened?! How can I get them back? I found some solutions for Opera 12 and other versions but nothing has worked for me. I am so bummed and angry! Will bve using some other browser if this does not get resolved. UGH

Cannot see any obvious way to move a bookmark into a bookmark folder nor a way to put the folder on the bookmarks toolbar. Back to Comodo, bye, bye

    • rr

Seems pretty obvious, just Ctrl+Shift+B, as in ANY OTHER browser.
Also, I ditched Comodo bcoz of the constant warnings from gmail that this browser is out of date, Seem to be liking Opera so far. Just wish the had keywords for ANY bookmark as in (old)FF.

  • http://www.phnxboards.com/ James McAllister

My biggest problem with the bookmark system is that it doubles all of my bookmarks. If I bookmark a page, close that tab, and move to another tab, Opera bookmarks the new tab as well. It does this every single time. I would only like to bookmark the tabs I tell Opera to bookmark.
